Subject: New Barack Obama Song

Hello,

I think you will be interested in a song I have just written titled ILLINOIS BOY, inspired by Barack Obama. I first heard about the Senator while on one of my annual holidays in Honolulu, where he grew up. Some of our Hawaiian friends' children had gone to school with him. They told me of their pride in this Senator from Illinois.

ILLINOIS BOY is witty, whimsical and fun, with a slight country flavor. A few friends have suggested that you can’t refer to a black man in America as a boy. But it’s not unusual in country music to call a youthful man a boy, and I think they are overlooking the change in race relations that Obama’s candidacy so clearly embodies.

So, boys and girls, as it says in ILLINOIS BOY, “Nothing’s ever gonna be the same!"

You can hear the A 2   minute clip instantly and for free at http://cdbaby.com/cd/anniepalovcik . Please give it a listen.   No time before Super Tuesday for hard CD's; download the 5-song EP CHANGES for just 4.97 to put ILLINOIS BOY out on the airwaves.

Forty six is maybe getting on a bit to be "a youthful man" - but then politicians have a different way of measuring youth and age.

Here's the hyperlink to that song:

Here's my 2 cents about this song:

I think the song is pleasant. However, I don't see any connection what so ever between the lyrics and Barack Obama [besides the fact that he presently resides in the state of Illinois].

It seems from the audio clip that I listened to that this was a love song. Since Barack Obama is married, did you imagine it was his wife singing this song to him?

I "get" that you're rhyming the word "Illinois" with the word "boy". However, I'm not sure that this song is helpful to Obama's candidacy as it could remind people of the times [not that long ago] that Black men were referred to as boys. Given this history, I very much agree with those persons you have talked to who expressed their concerns about the use of the word "boy" to refer to a man, particularly a Black man.

Furthermore, there's a part of the lyrics which refers to the "Illinois boy" stopping smoking. If indeed you meant this song to be about Barack Obama, as you indicated, then although I read that Obama is a former cigarette smoker {or he is at least trying to stop smoking?}, I'm concern that some people might take that smoking line in the song to be an allusion to his smoking pot as a teen.
If you are truly supportive of Senator Obama's candidacy for President, is this part of his life what you want to remind people of through song?

I'm not sure if your intentions are honorable. If they are, I hope my comments are helpful to you.
