Cubbies? No can win, noway, nohow. White Sox, MAYbe.

But the commercials may be fun enough to keep me awake while we tape and multi-channel-hop the hockey game!

Mick is gonna nail Peter, Paul, AND Mary? Isn'ee too old to do that? Will there be sports commentary and instant replay with slomo?

I am completely serious...NPR said so and that will be the ONLY reason I tune in...that is, if the station which burnt down two weeks ago got their temp. gear in place. Last night we still had colour bars on the boob tube. They can bring it to cable via a Denver station, but they have to pay a hefty amount and all of their advert records were lost, so can't even make sure they get all of the revenue they were supposed to, etc.

Is this thread something to do with a new bathroom cleanser?

My wife's eagle webcam group is discussing their own "super bowl" in terms of which eagle nests-bowls they will be watching around the world for:

Courtship
Nest building
Egg laying
Fending off predators
Chick Feeding
Etc.

It's to early for branching, fledging, and the rest of the riveting activities that eagles demonstrate to millions of eager fans around the world.

Charley Noble, who will possibly watch the final inning

The Super Bowl: starting with so much hype by people who act as if this is the only really important thing to happen ever, followed by the national anthem sung by someone who can't do it justice. Commercials. The kick-off, the kick-off shown from 40 different angles. Commercials. Another play. the same play shown from 30 different angles. Commercials. Commentary on what you've just seen, in case you're too stupid to understand it. Another play. Repeated from different angles. Commercials. An hour later, the score is 33 to 6. I go and do something else. Tomorrow I'll learn that the losing team came from behind to win in what is being called the most exciting Super Bowl in the history of the game. It's the same every year and I never learn.

I just popped into the Seattle Public Library website and put a hold on it. As of two minutes ago, I am 156 on a hold list of 156 for 29 copies, so it might be a while.

In the meantime, Barbara brought home some cereal from Trader Joe's. Some mixed cluster kind of thing with a vanilla flavor. Barbara added some raisins to it, so I had a Super Bowl for breakfast this morning. Delicious!

MSNBC promises that you can WATCH THEM ALL:

                       Superbowl Ads This Year

Intro page says that ads for this year will be on line shortly after shown, with an "all up" of them all soon after them game to allow "voting" for the best/worst ads.

For nostalgia buffs, or those who just missed out last year:

Don, if you search on the author at the NPR sites you'll find several very good interviews with him. I think he was on Diane Rehm, or maybe Fresh Air. I know he was on a local KERA-FM program recently. They pod cast the last ten weeks. If you search for the program called "Think" you might find it.

Pretty amazing that this thread has inspired responses ONLY from non-fans. So far.

Report from New Orleans:

We were at a friend's house for a Mardi Gras/Superbowl party. The Bacchus parade was two blocks away, scheduled to start 10 minutes after scheduled kickoff time. Guests had the option to watch football on TV or stroll over to the parade route. I opted to watch the game through the first half and until the end of the Tom Petty set, then walked up to the Avenue to catch a few beads. Back in front of the TV in time for that great 4th quarter.

Almost all of us were really happy for our homeboy Eli Manning. There were a couple of houseguests from Boston who were less than overjoyed.

I recorded the Austen episode to visit later, but watched a little. "Masterpiece," as they're calling now, seems to have fallen and it can't get up. Without major corporate sponsorship they're turning out or purchasing on the cheap these puny little versions of the Austen classics and diminishing them in the process.

In hindsight, it sounds like Charley Nobel got it right! I don't care for football because of the huge corporate sponsorship and all of the commercial nonsense, but when you have a come-from-behind ending, it makes it almost seem like it was a real sporting event, and not just a commercial spectacle.

No, really, it was a spectacular fourth quarter, from all the reports -- I was dispatched on errands and couldn't see it. Sandy Koufax was amazing.

I did catch a pregamer rendition of "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies..." by Willie Nelson and a real charmer of a young gal with a beautiful voice whose name I missed. The lucky old fart got to hug her several times afterwards. Sigh.

Thanks again, Maggie. I will go cruise NPR websites.

Barbara and I have been following the "Jane Austen-athon." This is a bit rough on Barbara because she knows the books so well that she can practically do a sing-along with the dialogue. She is looking forward to the upcoming one (Pride and Prejudice) because we have already seen it. She says that the Masterpiece Theatre mini-series version (1980) with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul was better, but this version is "okay." This is the one with Colin Firth as Darcy (no relation, as far as I know, except, of course, that we're both hunks. . . .).   I'm wondering if they're going to play the whole mini-series or chop it to pieces and try to cram in into one episode (!??).

The one Barbara has the real problem with is Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. Barbara is sort of like one of the characters in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. I think she has the whole book memorized word-for-word. Most movie/television versions, including this most recent one, have her snarling and spitting and stomping on the floor. We did watch one version that she found somewhere between "acceptable" and "quite good." That was the 1983 mini-series with Zelah Clarke as Jane and and Timothy Dalton as Rochester. I bought her the DVD of version for this Christmas.

Yes, that Zelah Clark/Timothy Dalton version was the best Jane Eyre, despite a small budget and cast (and some low production values also, sad to say). So it's out on DVD? I have a two-tape collection of it. I remember the Rintoul version, but haven't seen it in years.

It's kind of like comparing Jane Marple versions. I by far preferred Joan Hickson in the role, but darn it, she's dead, and now we have a new, more spritely Miss Marple in Geraldine McEwan. I may or may not get used to her, but the series has my attention. Margaret Rutherford was too robust, too pushy, and Helen Hayes was too timid.

Alright for you non-football schmucks, with your Cubs-Yankees-Maple Leafs (leaves?) banter. If you didn't watch, you probably aren't football fans anyway but, HEY...YOU MISSED A DAMN GOOD GAME!
The Giants defense did an amazing job of containing Tom Brady, while in Miami, old dolphins made champagne-cork-popping sounds.

ESPN has a poll on now where you can vote if you are happy the Patriots lost. Nationwide over 70% of the people who voted are quite happy the Cheatriots laid an egg.

Football fan? Well, I can't say that I really am. If it's, say, Thanksgiving, and everybody else is watching (and someone holds a gun to my head), I will watch also, and actually enjoy it, but other than that. . . .

I've liked Geraldine MacEwan in almost everything I've seen her in (one of my favorites is her portrayal of Miss Farnaby in the comedy/fantasy series "Mulberry." Or as Lucia in "Mapp and Lucia"). Her Miss Marple is good, but I agree, the best Miss Marple was Joan Hickson.

I recall a scene in one of the Joan Hickson episodes when a detective inspector says suspiciously, "Miss Marple, you're up to something!" She looks up from her knitting, all innocence, and says, "Oh . . . am I?"

Don, I stopped being lazy and went in and found one of the interviews (I've heard at least two. Another might have been on Bill Moyers). I work in the "Arlington, TX" they discuss at length. And though people tried to point out how stupid it is to fund this kind of project, they did it again, this time for the Dallas Cowboys stadium.

I didn't quite get the point of the episode last night based as it was (I think) on nothing but someone's imagination about how she could have lived.....?

Thanks again, Maggie. I found the interview with Terry Gross and listened to it. Fascinating and appalling! I'll hunt for more.

TRUBRIT, I think the "Miss Austen Regrets" piece was a sort of semi-fictional look at the author, some of which is known and the rest filled in with speculation. Much of the speculation could possibly have been confirmed, except that most of her private correspondence had been burned (one of the final scenes). At least, I guess that's what it was all about.

Uh . . . whether I'm as hunky as Colin Firth or not is, I guess a matter of opinion. I have to admit that he has quite a bit more hair (Clicky #1) than I do (CLICKY #2).
