Subject: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 04 Feb 08 - 09:27 AM Looking for earliest source/origin of: Shalom, chaverim, shalom chaverim, Shalom, shalom L'hit ra ot, l'hit ra ot, Shalom, shalom. Thanks! Allison |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: artbrooks Date: 04 Feb 08 - 12:55 PM Well, the Weavers recorded it back in the dark ages. I don't think its "liturgical", but I'm not sure how old the Hebrew is. I was once told it was a Habonim (Labor Zionist Youth) song. Not much help, I know. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 04 Feb 08 - 01:56 PM I don't ever recall singing it in kindergarten. Looky here: http://zemerl.com/cgi-bin//show.pl?title=Shalom+Chaverim |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 04 Feb 08 - 02:51 PM Thanks, Volgadon- I did see that site, but it looks like an updated composed arrangement of the song. Every single source I've checked says either "traditional Hebrew song" or "traditional Israeli song". Well, I figured that out, but having sung this song for over 30 years, I'd love to know more of the source! BTW, it sounds wonderful as a harmony to Jean Ritchie's Peace Round (caution: the music starts playing when the page comes up!) |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 04 Feb 08 - 04:26 PM I thought that the site gave the author's name. Best I could find. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: GUEST,Dani Date: 04 Feb 08 - 05:07 PM Also fun to do with this: if you time it right, you can sing it along with Wade In The Water, and also a sweet little Arabic verse whose name I forget (OK, Unitarians: it's in the hymnal somewhere.) I love the mix. Dani |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: mouldy Date: 05 Feb 08 - 04:51 AM We sing this at our church's Last Supper "re-enactment" in Holy Week. Don't know its origins, though. Andrea |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: Vin2 Date: 05 Feb 08 - 08:32 AM The Spinners sang it quite a lot at their gigs. Probably recorded it too. You could always ask Hughie or Mick Groves at his web site at http://www.mickgroves.com/thespinners.php |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 05 Feb 08 - 05:21 PM Dani, tell me more about the sweet little Arabic verse- I wrote one several years ago to go with these songs, so I'm wondering... |
Subject: RE: Origins: Shalom Chaverim From: GUEST,Dani Date: 05 Feb 08 - 05:59 PM It's been so long since I saw/sang it. It's in the Unitarian Universalist hymnal, which I had one of until 48 hours ago. DARN! ... anyone? Dani |
