I was asked last night (as I'm quite into Italian folk music) if I knew of any folk festivals in Italy. I had to admit that I'd not really gone into it but in my wanderings around the 'net I'd only seen references to local festivals celebrating local saints, harvests, crops etc and one in north west Italy called, if IIRC, Folkermesse which seemed to be regionally based over the summer/autumn period.

Are there any Sidmouth/Towersey like folk music festivals in Italy?

Any experience of them?

Cheers,

Darren

There is a large music festival running in Italy about the end of May, which, if I recall correctly, 2 years ago had a huge assortment of music - unfortunately, because I was involved in one of the choirs performing, I didn't get to see any of the other acts. I do know that it was huge and covered a large part of the Verona/Padua/Venice region, with lots of different genres. I'm not at home right now (pretending to work) but I'll see if I can find the publicity from the concerts we did when I get there.

Yes, Dave I know although I got the impression it was a Sword Dance festival rather than a general folk festival. Would have loved to have been there though.

Some of those sword dance festivals get pretty hot!! But you are right and it may also just have been a "local" event.

crikey! Where did it go???

OK - we'll try that the old way. Her name is Arianna Fioretti, website is www.hirio.com and there's a link there to Celtic World, which seems to have further links to festivals.

Right. Let's see if THIS ONE works! (you can breathe now, Dazbo.)

There is a magazine, Folk Bullettin, that lists a lot festivals of traditional music in Italy. Now they have a site: http://www.folkbulletin.com/index.html. The èproblem is it is in Italian, but I think you could contact them.

Another site that lists folk festivals in Italy: http://www.folkest.com/index.php?id=10.
