From: muppitz

Just passing on the devestating news that John Wright, who for the past decade or more has lead many incarnations of the John Wright Band, has passed away. I afraid I have no details though.
John has been a friend of mine through virtually all of that decade and I am struggling to believe the news. A great singer has been taken before he should have been in my opinion.
My most heartfelt condolances go to Barbara and John's family.

One of nature's gentlemen. He introduced me and many others to singer / songwriters who would otherwise have remained unknown.

The late 90's line up of the band was my personal favourite, he remains the most charismatic performer I have ever seen.
He'll be sadly missed

He was an absolutely stunning performer. He said he would only sing songs that he believed in, and this gave his act a tremendous power. My favourite was the one that starts "They say the battle is over....."

I also loved his story about the sheepdog trials "There was nowt wrong with the dog".

RE: The "John Wright of Jew's harp fame" someone asked about earlier in this thread was truly an amazing performer who got sounds out of those much maligned instruments that I have never ever heard anyone else duplicate---except possibly an expert Tuvan mouth singer. I heard him in the later 1970s with his performing partner from France named Catherine --- I can't recall her last name--but maybe it was Perrier. This man definitely spoke with a British accent and I assumed he was from England.

Please, someone, clarify whether or not we are talking about the same gentleman named John Wright!?

Either way, I am saddened by the death of this talented man this thread is mourning, and I send my sincere condolences to all who loved him and his music.

Art, you're thinking of a different John Wright. The one you and PMB are talking about has lived in France for years, was a great singer, Jew's harp player, fiddler, and in the 1980s and 90s was a member of the Breton Sea Shanty group Cabestan. His wife was indeed Catherine Perrier.

I don't know whether the John Wright who moved to France is still with us, but I have no reason to think he's not. He's definitely a different man from the John Wright who this thread was about.

Very sad to hear it nonetheless. Never got to see the late John Wright live, but I have a couple of CDs he's on....

As far as I know the John Wright, married to Catherine Perrier in Paris, is indeed alive and kicking. I think the Michael Wright mentioned above is his brother, but I may be wrong there.

I didn't know the John Wright of the John Wright Band, from what I have read I wish I had, and mourn his passing along with everyone else.

I got confused about the two John Wright's a few years back.
Lucy Wright who used to play at Gainsborough Folk Club and Faldingworth Live, kep't on talking about her uncles John & Michael Wright and it was quite some time before I realised that the John Wright that she was on about, had no link to the John Wright Band.

I do remember that one of her uncles was a brilliant Jew's Harp player and indeed Lucy learn't to play the Jews Harp from him.

So the answer is that John Wright (Jews Harp) was not the John who sadly passed away.

There is a book of condolences on his website, as shown in the link above in danensis's posting.
From what I have heard too it sounds like it was a massive stroke that sadly took him away. He had been due to do another tour in Scotland in March.
He did at one time have a young fiddler in the band called JOE Wright, who came from Norfolk (not too far from Lowestoft, so maybe that's who Captain Birdseye is thinking of?) This was the source of a number of jokes; "the son I never knew I had" at his gigs.
I believe John was from the North of England?

Sad is not just the word...it's the deepest felt feeling of sorrow and tears for losing this musician, this friend, this husband, this father, this grandfather!

We got the new by Els and Rian his Dutch tourassistants. They, as we were too, were as struck by lightning finding the newly wed husband John passed away so suddenly. Joke and I have been to concerts John gave in Holland quite often and will always remember the warm ambiance of his songs as a kind of verbal embrace everyone in the hall experienced.

Many songs have been mentioned by those entering their thoughts onto the condolences website(s) in UK, DE, DK, BE, NL as being of importance to all morners. To me it's "Dance with my father again" that struck me and brought me to tears.

Barbara, there's always too little words, too little arms around you, too little time to speak, to cry, to comfort, to remember your John.... because afterall that's who he was: YOUR John.
Knowning him just a little ....I'nm sure his love will never leave you and the (grand)kids.

Cherish his unique love for ever in your heart and soul!

Love from Zoetermeer (NL)
Joke and Peter

John Wright 1947-2008

Pete Abbott (John Wright Band) will be at The Clarence Folk Club (Blackpool) this Wednesday 13th February, it's going to be a tough gig!

I heard this evening (too late to confirm) that the evening will be turned over to "John's songs", and Gregor Borland (John Wright Band) is coming over to Join Pete for the evening.

This will be a sad farewell to John but I'm sure he would prefer to leave us all with a smile on our faces, fond memories of his friendship and appreciation of his works.

To quote Pete's song "Windy Harbour"

Life is a game Win or lose it's all the same
you live and you die Just don't let it pass you by
You have choices to make You have chances to take
You will laugh, you will sing and you will cry
But don't let a moment pass you by"

John sang this song for us the last time we saw him and certainly John didn't let a moment of life pass him by!

He is going to be missed by us and everyone his life touched, a sad loss.

RIP John Wright

PB
