Without reference to Utube, I think I know which song you are referring to and I'll get back with some lyrics but may not be the same version Caitlín Maude sang.Unfortunately I have no copy of her Gael Linn recording

Check Brian O'Rourke Pale Rainbow.Irish Academic Press 1990. ISBN 0-7165-2425. There's a text in Irish plus two translations by Brian, one literal and one singable.

If Caitlín Maude sang it on RTÉ in 1979, this would almost certainly predate Brian's translation. However, they may both have used the same Gaelic text, for the song had died out in tradition when the melody was resurrected by Seán O'Riada in the 1960s. Brian's note to this entry says, "The song is, incidentally now sung by a few singers from the Cuil Aodha area, who learned it at first or second hand from O'Riada. I'd guess that's where Caitlín Maude learned it also.

The song's title is 'Is Fada mo Chosa gan Bróga' and Caitlín's album first appeared in 1976.

It was certainly popular in Donegal - Séamus Ennis collected it from Nóra Ní Ghallchóir of Gortahork.

All that the album's notes reveal is that while popular in the Ulster province it was sung in Connemara too with the implication that her native region was the source of Caitlín's version. 'Love takes a beating from separation. It's a man's song, so Caitlín has changed, where need be, mnaá to fir. And why not? No song brings out more consistently the sweetness of her voice.' Said notes were written by the poet Pearse Hutchinson.

Double whoops. I didn't check Youtube before posting the stuff about Brian O'Rourke's transalation of Aisling Gheal, or checked the fragment of text. Presumably Aisling Gheal was the name of the tv programme?
