I'm sure I heard him on one of the trad programmes on Irish radio (either RnaG or RTE Radio 1) recently, singing and sounding good. But I was doing something else at the time and wasn't really able to listen.

Nothing new about him on Google, even if you ask it to search only Irish pages. But, five entries down, there's MRS FLANNERY - I always forget just how public Mudcat is. (Makes me shudder when I think of some of those flamefest threads.)

I always liked Phil's music, and hope someone will post an update.

I first started to listen to traditional singing when I moved to Athlone, in the Irish Midlands, many years ago. At the time, there was a local folk club run by a guy called Tony Holleran - from whom I learned many a song. He in turn was a great friend and fan of Phil - whom I subsequently got to know independently. One way or another, the pair of them are resposnible for a good part of my repertoire! Not sure either of them would accept the blame, mind you.

Regards

p.s. Tony was also involved in Mrs. Flannery's Folk club in Tullamore, not far from Athlone! Hence the crack..

Weren't Tony and Dominic playing high-class country music a few years back - complete with bootlace ties? Still at it?

Regards

p.s. Cobh in June is sea shanty time - you Midlands folks wouldn't understand.... Mind you, I ran a sea shanty session in Sean's (try saying that afer severial pints) Bar in Athlone, many years ago - just for the kick of singing them as far as you can get from the sea in Ireland!

Martin Ryan posted a Facebook message today reporting the death of Phil Callery of the Voice Squad. Martin says:
Just heard of the death overnight of Phil Callery, one of the finest solo traditional singers of our generation and a member of the hugely influential Voice Squad.
Jerry O'Reilly says:
I've just heard that Phil Callery passed away in hospital in Kilkenny..he collapsed while singing How Can I Live On Top Of The Mountain..was at a house concert by Liam o Maonlai. Such very sad news!
Can somebody find and post an obituary?

I am horribly shocked at the news.

I'd been seeing Phil on zoom sings in the past year; he always seemed in good form and was writing songs and setting poems to tunes.

Sad news indeed. I have much enjoyed his music over the years. In addition to the Voice Squad albums, I have his 2 very fine solo albums - 'The Edge of Memory' and 'Landscape of the Past'. These are still available via Amazon albeit at ridiculous prices.
