I couldn't get any sound to come out - just a blank black screen with a little playbar in the middle which moved, could be stopped & started, and generally behaved itself as would be expected, except that it was silent. Do you need a special player for it?

Anyway, Melissa's idea of posting whatever words you do know is a good one.

"..where boys fought for Ireland and many fell down" is a line in it, Mick. Sounds like several place names through the song and a line about woodcocks and wild geese.

i have the same problem with realplayer. the best thing you can do is right click the link and save target as. then once you saved it, open with other program

On the 3rd verse mick it is "sweet dromahair". And 7th verse is compare with "Lough Allen". Those are the bits I definitely know. Thankyou for what you have done so far though.

A few more words based on what I know of Leitrim:

Verse 3 line 2 = sweet Dromahaire

Verse 4 line 2 Sliabh-an-Iarainn

I'm not sure about line 3 - it sounds like "luminous cross" and a cross was put up in 1954 (Marian Year) at Fivemilebourne but I know no more about it.

Verse 5 line 3; "Go on to Seltan, that hill of renown"
Site of an ambush by British troops during the Wars of Independence

Verse 6 line 2 = St Caillin - founder of Fenagh

Verse 7 line 2 = Lough Allen...Melvin and Bran

Originally written and sung by a man called Josie Mcdermott from Ballyfarnon Boyle . A blind poet and musician and a great traditional singer.

First Recorded by Pat ely and the rocky tops showband in the 60-70s showband era

kevin prendergast did a version as well but much more recently

Strange, but Laitrim is the name of a rather nice-to-look-at plant (purple) that has invaded the Midwest of the USA in recent years. Definitely an invasive species, it simply takes over and crowds out native plants. For ten years ('86-'97) I saw it all over the Mississippi River shores of Iowa and Illinois.

I was certain this song was about that----but no!

Art Thieme: I've been trying to identify the invasive plant you mentioned. Did you mean Lythrum salicaria = Purple loosestrife? If so, we have it in Minnesota, too, but I haven't seen it along the shores of the Mississippi.
