But the sentimental ballads and paddywhackery were what first attracted my notice of "Irish" as a musical identity (well, I was just a little kid...) FWIW it also inspired me to pick out tunes on the piano and even make up my own little jigs. It was a black day for my long-suffering mother when I worked out The Irish Washerwoman - she was then treated to a non-stop diet of it, relieved only by enthusiastic bursts of the Dragnet theme (which I thought was really cool) and DaVEEEEE, Daveee Crockett... |

Subject: RE: Because of.. I started to listen to... From: kendall Date: 10 Feb 08 - 03:11 PM Hey ranger Steve, do you remember Lee Moore the coffee drinking nighthawk?.He and I used to do Smokey Greene's bluegrass festival in Porter Corners NY. He always carried that stupid music stand with his songs on it. He sang the same songs year after year and never memorized any of them. I remember one time, he was getting ready to go on stage and I helped him by carrying his music stand with its heavy base, and he remarked, "Now you can tell everyone that you played bass for me." Another time he met me as I came off the stage, he said, "Mister, for a performance like that, you deserve a 5th" He handed me a broken guitar string. Comedy was not his long suit. |

Does anyone recall Lazy Jim Day and his "Singing News": Come listen, everybody and I'll bring you the singing news, A little bit of sunshine to chase away the blues. Humourous snippets of news would follow. |
Subject: RE: Because of.. I started to listen to... From: RangerSteve Date: 10 Feb 08 - 06:52 PM Kendall - yes, Lee Moore was one of my early musical heroes. When I started listening to the Jamboree, Moore, Doc Williams, Betty Amos, Mac Wiseman and the Blue Ridge Quartet were among the regulars. That combination of traditional music with commercial county overtones is what I favor in my performances. |
