I just recalled a statement that Gordon made many years ago. Quote, "When Kendall and I met, we each thought we were the only folk singer in Maine. It was like a man crawling across a desert and suddenly having someone pass him a glass of water."

Tin Pan Alley plastic shamrock-&-leprecaun songs (which is all there was in my neck of the woods in those days) - TO - The Clancy Brothers & similar bands

Then:

The Clancys & co (whom I still like & listen to) - TO - Unaccompanied traditional singers & later seán nos

It was always a matter of following and focusing. But the sentimental ballads and paddywhackery were what first attracted my notice of "Irish" as a musical identity (well, I was just a little kid...)

FWIW it also inspired me to pick out tunes on the piano and even make up my own little jigs. It was a black day for my long-suffering mother when I worked out The Irish Washerwoman - she was then treated to a non-stop diet of it, relieved only by enthusiastic bursts of the Dragnet theme (which I thought was really cool) and DaVEEEEE, Daveee Crockett...

Hey ranger Steve, do you remember Lee Moore the coffee drinking nighthawk?.He and I used to do Smokey Greene's bluegrass festival in Porter Corners NY. He always carried that stupid music stand with his songs on it. He sang the same songs year after year and never memorized any of them.
I remember one time, he was getting ready to go on stage and I helped him by carrying his music stand with its heavy base, and he remarked, "Now you can tell everyone that you played bass for me."
Another time he met me as I came off the stage, he said, "Mister, for a performance like that, you deserve a 5th" He handed me a broken guitar string.
Comedy was not his long suit.

I well remember Lee Moore, the coffee-drinking nighthawk. I used to listen to him on WWVA till the wee hours of the morning.I used to enjoy listening to him singing "The Cat Came Back".
Does anyone recall Lazy Jim Day and his "Singing News":

Come listen, everybody and I'll bring you the singing news,
A little bit of sunshine to chase away the blues.

Humourous snippets of news would follow.

Kendall - yes, Lee Moore was one of my early musical heroes. When I started listening to the Jamboree, Moore, Doc Williams, Betty Amos, Mac Wiseman and the Blue Ridge Quartet were among the regulars. That combination of traditional music with commercial county overtones is what I favor in my performances.

Bonnie, that's about what we had for Irish stuff, too, in fact I used to beg my dad to play the Irish Washerwoman. It was my fav. to dance to. Burl Ives was quite popular in our part of the world, too and led to many other artists, as did Harry Belafonte.

A friend in college had me listen to a recording by a group called Pentangle which led me to Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and then to Martin Carthy, The Watersons, The Cooper Family and then on to more traditional singers.

The Kingston Trio led me to Frank Profitt and other traditional American singers.

You only have to open the lid a bit before you smell the coffee and want more - same with folk music.

By taking me under his wing at the Press Room, Curmudgeon has gotten me into Lou Killen, John Roberts, June Tabor and a host of Child ballad singers.

Because being dragged to a Jethro Tull concert, I started listening to Fairport Convention. Which in turn has started me listening to....well...almost everything in a convoluted way. All English and Celtic folk, country, blues, world, jazz. In some way, all of those avenues opened up for me in November, 1987 in Worcester, Massachusetts when I saw them. Thanks guys!
