There are no fixed criteria. Traditional material is more apt to find early inclusion than contemporary material; songs that have several variants are more likely to warrant earlier inclusion; songs that capture my (or Susan's) fancy are apt to find their way into the database sooner. Songs for which we can find tunes get preferential treatment.

We're getting closer to being able to provide much more frequent upgrades.

The forum is a database. The DT is another DB. The DT is Dick and Susan's personal songbook/project that Mudcat is kind enough to host, and in which Mudcatters volunteer to help D&S as D&S need and request and direct.

Because I really only collect the songs I'm interested in it doesn't make sense to download the DT-- but I have put together a songbook so that when I meet up with a musical friend and want to share a song I love the words are handy.

For me the pleasure of Mudcat is all the other interesting stuff folks share about the history of the songs, the people who have recorded them etc. But there are times when I just need the words and the DT is so much easier-- luckily when doing a search the threads come up and I can save them for later or do tracers. Which is what makes Mudcat so wonderful.

Somewhere or other Susan said that not every song in the Forum gets entered on the Digital Tradition, I can't remember what the selection criteria are tho, maybe you could search her posts. Or wait till she or Dick see this thread!

Which of course could make it hard for those who just download the DT, & don't use Mudcat to search the DT & Forum.

Actually, Bekki, the answer to your question is time. Dick and Susan maintain the DT, and when they have the time, things get added. I'm sure it's much easier to add a lot all at once in one huge update than to try to do it say, every month, a few at a time.

Hi Kat! glad you are still here, you're one of the (many) best things about Mudcat :) Have missed you...

I have occasionally dropped in to research songs but haven't had much time for other stuff, so have kept a low profile. Hope to remedy that -- Though I have also re-discovered my love for contra dancing and am going once a week to the dances at the local university.

Just curious about the criteria used for deciding which songs get added.
For instance, in seeking out the song "Gloomy Winter's Noo Awa'", I found that Wolfgang had posted the words in a thread but it has never been added to the data base. This happens fairly frequently. Other songs do get listed on threads and are in the database. I assume they are added after someone posts them. So why some songs and not others?

There are lots I see here that I would expect to find in the database and they aren't there. not bitching, just asking...
