Over in the Tim Hardin thread I made this tacky remark:

Way back when it was still allright to call women "chicks" Tim Hardins "If I were a Carpenter" was the last song a lot of us guys would sing before we made our "Big Move" on a new chick. A lot of us guys owe Tim Hardin - because it usually worked. And when it didn't you knew it was time to move on.

I'm assuming other guys used that song the same way I did. If not - what song did you use? And I'd love to hear what songs you women used in those situations.

....by the way, isn't it still alright to call women chicks?....no experience with "if I were a carpenter", but Eric Andersen's "come to my bedside" was a great example back in '65 or so....the best I know of is Kenny Girard's "lovers like me"......

While I'm not willing to call it "a seduction song", I progressed a long way in the courting of my Beautiful Wife by singing to her Robert Burns' wonderful song, Bonnie Wee Thing.

As far as "seduction" goes, repeatedly and persistently asking her to marry me went a lot farther.

Jackson Brown's "These Days" always worked for me. Also another Tim Hardin song I mentioned over in that other thread, "Misty Roses."

The aforementioned "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" was on my list, too, along with another country-style Dylan song from the same era, "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You."

GET YOUR BISCUITS IN THE OVEN AND YOUR BUNS IN THE BED
(Kinky Friedman)

You uppity women, I don't understand
Why you gotta go and try to act like a man,
But before you make your weekly visit to the shrink,
You'd better occupy the kitchen, liberate the sink.

CHORUS: Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.
That's what I to my baby said.
Women's liberation is a-goin' to your head.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.

Early ever' mornin' you're out on the street
Passin' out pamphlets to ever'one you meet.
You gave up your Maidenform for Lent,
And now the front of your dress has an air-scoop vent.

Ever' single great man that's ever come along
Had a little woman always tellin' him he's wrong.
Eve said to Adam, "Here's an apple, you hoss,"
And Delilah defoliated Samson's moss. CHORUS

Mean-minded harpies are breakin' all the laws,
Tearin' up their girdles and a-burnin' up their bras.
Now the air is dirty and the sex is clean,
And your coffee makes my hair turn green.

So damn emancipated in your mind and your body,
Gonna have to cancel all your lessons in karate.
If you can't love a male chauvinist,
You better cross me off o' your shoppin' list. CHORUS

Let me see, so many songs, so many seductions, in my mind!

Did I sing "The Highland Tinker (with his bloody great kidney wiper)" or was it "The Gathering of the Clan" or "I Don't Want to be a Soldier (Monday I touched her on the ankle)."

Or it might have been "The Welcome Song" if I were more sober.

Recorded BY but NOT written by Leon Redbone !! This One :-

(I WANT TO BE) SEDUCED
(Gary Richard Tigerman)

Recorded by : Peggy Lee; Leon Redbone; Richard Dreyfuss.

I wanna be seduced,
Let a woman talk to me suggestively;
Wanna know that she'd like me to be with her tomorrow morning
Drinkin' hot jasmine tea.
I want her to make me laugh (ha ha ha),
Make a point about touching me when she talks (uhhmm ho ho hmm),
Leaving all the jealous guys in the place to
mumble in their wine and gawk.
I know it only happens when I'm napping,
Nodding in a reverie,
That I find myself a woman that understands about seducing me.

I know it only happens when I'm napping,
Nodding in a reverie,
That I find myself a woman who understands about seducing,
I'll dream about the moon until she'll introduce herself,
I'm imagining a woman who understands seducing me.

I want to be seduced, I want a woman to take me out to dinner for two
I want to see her eyes gettin' moody,
Flirtin' with the thought of what flirtin' can lead to
I want to act real cool, have her think about gettin' little me in bed
Have a chat about Magna Charta, or Puerto Vallarta, or somethin' Gandhi said

I might demur politely, falter slightly, if she starts to fondle my knee,
But I'm relatively certain I'd compromise if I know me

I want to be seduced, I want a wom-an to talk to me suggestively
I want to hear her say she'll be with me tomorrow morning,
Drinking hot jasmine tea

I want her to make me laugh, make a point of touching me when she talks
Leaving all the jealous guys in the joint to mumble in their beer and gawk

I wanna be seduced,
I wanna a woman to take me out to dinner for two;
I'd like to see her eyes get moony
Flirting with the thought of what a little flirting outta to do.
I'd like to be real cool
Let her figure out what I really mean, instead
of havin' a chat about African genesis, psychokinesis
or something Stanislavsky said.

I might demure politely,
Or falter slightly
If she tries to fondle my knee,
But I'm relatively certain that I'd come across if I know me.

I know it only happens, when I'm napping, nodding in my reverie
That I ever find a woman who wouldn't mind seducing me
I know it only happens, when I'm napping, nodding in my reverie
That I ever find a woman who wouldn't mind seducing
Starting from the moment that we'd been introduced
That I ever find a woman who wouldn't mind seducing me

In my day, most of us were at least marginally discreet in our approaches, even oblique. "Foggy, Foggy Dew" was considered a little risque'. We didn't want the ladies to see it coming directly, you know. When Dylan did "Lay, Lady, Lay..." he blew everybody's cover!

Pre-seduction - Ewan McColl's 'First Time Ever'.

Tree weeks later, having been given the Spanish Fiddle (el Bow) -
'Come kiss me, Love, before you leave me', or 'Bridget O'Malley', or 'Lambs on the Green Hill'.

I found Tom Paxton's 'My Lady's a Wild-flying Dove' handy.

At risk of thread drift, the Morris side with which I danced, when one of the lads was getting wed, used to dance this Set :

The Maid of the Mill ; (Ilmington)

The Blue-Eyed Stranger (or The Gallant Hussar) ; (Bledington)

Haste to the Wedding ; (Longborough)

Getting Upstairs ; (Headington)

The Cuckoo's Nest ; (Bucknell)

Dearest Dicky. (Field Town)

From: Uncle Phil
Date: 14 Feb 08 - 08:58 AM

Here's a song of seduction that never, ever works, but is a lot of fun to play. Happy Valentine's Day.

WHY DON'T WE GET DRUNK
(Jimmy Buffett)

I really do appreciate the fact you're sitting here,
Your voice sounds so wonderful,
But your face don't look too clear,
So barmaid bring a pitcher, another round of brew,
Why don't we get drunk and screw?

Why don't we get drunk and screw,
I just bought a waterbed,
It's filled up for me and you,
They say you are a snuff queen,
But I don't think that's true,
Honey, why don't we get drunk and screw?

(Instrumental)

Why don't we get drunk and screw,
I just bought a waterbed,
It's filled up for me and you,
They say you are a snuff queen,
Honey, I don't think that's true,
So why don't we get drunk and screw?

-        Phil

For our international friends, snuff queen = an unclassy, rural female = a girl who dips snuff or chews tobacco

I'm pretty sure that "Have Some Madeira, M'Dear," the song topical toms links to with his blue clicky "Wine, the aphrodesiac," is a Tom Lehrer composition. (The web page linked-to credits two other folks, probably someone who recorded it as a duet.)

Those humorous songs that'll never actually seduce anyone are fun and intereting. but can we get back to listing some serious romantic numbers that actually can seduce a halfway-willing lover? It is Valentice's Day, after all.

I'm sure that most of you reading this are, like me, overaged and terminally married, no longer "in the market." Still, we have memories, don't we? The urge to perform music that all of us have experienced certainly involves, at least partially, some kind of desire to find a way to connect with the opposite sex (or whatever one might prefer). What worked for you?

"Have Some Madeira, M'Dear," is definitely by Flanders and Swann, whose style is not totally dissimilar to Tom Lehrer

Thanks, Snuffy. I knew nothing at all about Flanders and Swann.

Is it possible that Tom Lehrer ever covered this song? It doesn't seem likely that he ever played and sang anything except hsi own wacky composisions, but he may have liked this particulare song well enough to perform it ~ the style, as you point out, is VERY similar to his own.

I have heard the song, and in my mind's ear, I hear it sung in Mr. Lehrer's voice. Even if I've been mistaken all along about the singer's identity, I'm pretty sure that my memory is of a single voice performing "Have Some Mediera...," not a duet.

Tom Lehrer did compose and sing "I'll Hold Your Hand in Mine." The song may not quite fit the bill as a seduction song but I find it very poignant.

He also composed the "Masochism Tango."

Charley Noble

It's arguable (but I'm presenting no evidence) that Flanders and Swann provided some inspiration for Tom Lehrer, but the latter had a satirical bite where the other two were more whimsical; I think you'd rather like their repertoire, PoppaGator.

JennieG and Lizzie are right. Although a good singer/muso may 'arouse' in a general sense, the lady has to feel that all your sense is directed to her for your ability to have any seductive effect. And if she reckons you're worth it, almost any song sung to her will tug her heart strings. For a while.

Happy Valentine's Day to you all

And a man, who, when she stares into his soul, stares right back into hers......as the flames flicker and glow.....

I think Lizzie is getting us back to the original point.

Humorous songs about seduction are interesting and fun, but not what we originally tried to talk about here.

"Serenading" someone you already know and love is all very well and good, too.

But what really intrigues me is the situation ~ something I'm just barely able to remember from my long-gone youth ~ where a performer manages to establish eye contact with a total stranger in the audience and, thanks to the use of someone else's words set to music, coupled with one's own ability to portray sincerity, passion, etc., is able to reveal his/her soul clearly enough to bring about a total "instant-karma" meltdown.

Dead-serious expressions of romantic angst are the best; most of the Tim Hardin songbook qualifies, and as I mentioned before, I always found "These Days," written by the then-15-year-old(!) Jackson Browne, to "work for me" as well or better than any other selection. If that means that my true romantic identity was that of an adolescent lonely-boy, well then, so be it.

Another closely-related type of "seduction song" adds a layer of sly humor and may better serve to establish a connection when the listener is an older-and-wider type. I'm thinking of the two "Nashville Skyline" numbers also mentioned earlier, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You."

....John Hartford

(The 'UHs' were snorty grunts- sort of an "unnh", with a slight pause in between. At Winfield in about 1975, he started the song, and some young lady in the audience started shrieking out an "eee" after each "Unnhh"...John almost lost it. But the song worked, as a woman I knew later bragged she had gone off with John...)

Song, schmong.

I wasn't seduced, but was definitely impressed by my true-love-to-be at the end of a Geology Club meeting. As secretary of the club, I found myself emptying a vat of hot coffee (old and bitter) and dealing with the steaming coffee grounds. Meanwhile, five or six male grad students chewed the fat and pretended not to see me. One detached himself from the group and helped me with the job.

That was my true love.

I got a new CD in the mail today, and it's got this little gem on it (sound clip on the homepage):

CRAZY 'BOUT YOU
(Martyn Oram)

Hey, I'm sorry for the things that I said
Sometimes that beer goes straight to my head
We could sit here all night long
Talking 'bout this and that, who's right and who's wrong

Hey, I'm sorry for the things that I did
Sometimes that beer makes me flip my lid
Sometimes my mouth works faster than my brain
I guess I put my foot in it again

Oh, I'm crazy, crazy, crazy 'bout you
My head is spinning and I don't know what to do
Crazy, crazy, out of my head
So darlin' won't you take me to bed

Hey, I'm sorry for the things that I'll do
Sometimes that beer will go straight through
Will you still love me forever and a day
When you've heard all the crap that I can say?

Because I'm crazy, crazy, crazy 'bout you
My head is spinning and I don't know what to do
Crazy, crazy, out of my head
So darlin' won't you take me to bed

Best wishes,

Bente

Rowan: Heartstrings

Usually I understand those to be what keeps the heart in its place. But in here they get completely different associations. (-:
More like:

I wish I could play the strings of my heart
Strum them lightly to bring out its song.
To be able to play everything that I feel
And to have someone near that would sing along

Could you help me to free such a delicate sound
To do the one thing that I wouldn't dare
Reach deep inside me to break through the seal
And free all the music that's hidden in there

I'd like to hear the strings of your heart
Would you strum them so I can hear
Sing of the feelings your heart would reveal
And while you did would you let me be near

Baby, It's Cold Outside - Ray Charles and Betty Carter...I think that was her name, but the male singer was definately Ray. My aunt and uncle were big RC fans and I remember hearing it on their stereo.

John Hartford's 'Boogie' is off 'Aeroplane'. What a great album..I learned everysong on it and it changed my life, musically speaking.

Chicago Singer-Songwriter/Actor Marty Peifer used to do a great 'theatrical' unaccompanied version of 'Have Some Madera, M'Dear'. It's too bad there aren't any vidoes of him performing it as he included many sight gags, but I imagine WFMT-FM Chicago archives may have a recording or two as he performed his version at a number of benefit's that WFMT sponsored.

"Song of The Brass Key" and "One Good Boy Gone Wrong" from my favourite operetta, The Desert Song are literally seduction songs. I like them because the character who sings them (and parts of the other one) is the only female role in that production I can sing. It doesn't hurt that seduction is fun to act.

BENNIE: Bold woman, please unhand me,
You do not understand me,
I'm not the sort of man you seem to think I am.
I'm not a gay homewrecker, I'm just a simple soul,
Impervious to woman, song, and drink, I am!

CLEMENTINA: And are you sure you are?

BENNIE: Why yes, I think I am!

CLEMENTINA: So very pure you are

BENNIE: I'm on the brink, I am.

CLEMENTINA: Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!

BENNIE: I'm in the sink, I am.

Gosh, I might as well confess it,
If I didn't you would guess it,
Women are the bane of my youth!
Ev'ry one's a tiger cat,
With me it's sad but certain that,
with women, life can never be smooth!

For they can trip you,
With tricks and grip you like quicksand,

CLEMENTINA: Some day, dear you will be mine.

BENNIE: Can't you see I don't want you?

CLEMENTINA: I'll be a constant nymph or something sweet
To him for whom I pine.

CHORUS

BENNIE: One good boy gone wrong,
One good boy gone wrong,
Youth must have its fling so they say,
Here's where I start flinging my youth away,
One more victim picked,
Once more sex has clicked,
One more saphead who's been trapped and tricked,
Just another boy gone wrong.

Unless I missed it, no one mentioned Steeleye Span's "Rosebud in June", one of the most erotic songs I've ever heard, and yet completely suitable for the kiddies.

And for you gals, there's "Help Me Fake It Through the Night".

Redolent of the Icky Fifties:

You'll do it sometime, so why not now?
Please let me be the one to show me how.
Think what you're missing -- it's such a shame.
You're missing kissing and the rest of the game.
Down in New Zealand, where men are men,
A chicken never lays until she's a hen,
So don't be bashful. I'll show you how.
You'll do it sometime, so why not now?

I really do like folk songs, but I have yet to be seduced by a folk song. I'm still waiting, though....
