I sang in a group in the late 60s / early 70s and we were once lucky enough to be support for Tom Paxton -- whose music we already knew -- at a concert in Hamilton Town Hall (near Glasgow, Scotland).
We stayed in the wings to hear his set, and he sang 'Cindy's Crying', which I think he introduced as a new song. I thought it was an absolute knock-out and said so to him afterwards, wondering if I could have the words.
Anyway, he took a note of my address and I forgot about it -- until a copy of the sheet music arrived in the post a couple of weeks later!

Such a kindness from such a genuine chap -- and a great song too, saying so much in such a little space.

There's an additional verse to this song. It was omitted in most recordings (6, Compleat, Saturday Night, In Concert, etc), only to have appeared in the version on "Morning Again" CD re-issue. It was also included in cover versions by the Mitchell Trio and John Denver:

Now Cindy loves me but she has to go,
Down to the corner in the wind and snow.
Standin' on the corner while the rain comes down,
Standin' on the corner till the man comes 'round,
The man comes 'round.

Hi Mark, Hi Sandy, Hi all,

First of all, Mark, nope - it ain't me. I spent some time with Tom the last time he came through here and had a chance to ask him about Cindy's Crying. He said that all the slightly different versions were ok as he had a tendency to change the lyrics at random. They all work, though.

Best to all,
Ray

I seem to remember on the live album I've got (*so* much better than the studio recordings!), TP sings it at least once as "They call it livin', don't it feel like dyin'." IIRC it's the second and fourth verses. The rhythm was all pretty loose anyway, so whatever flows at the time, I guess.

Graham.

I remember the words as very slightly different from my long lost Tom Paxton Songbook. Here's the chords that fit:

(G)Cindy's cryin' but it (C)ain't no (G)use - She's got a habit and she (D)can't get (G)loose.

(G)Stoppin' each and ev'ry (C)man she (G)meets, gonna be a hooker on (D)Bleecker (G)Street.

On Bleecker (C)Street, Honey, makes me feel like (G)cryin'.

You (C)said you'd leave it but you ain't even (G)tryin'. (D)Say you're livin', I can see you're (G)dyin'.

"Cindy's Cryin'" also appears on the final Mitchell Trio album, "Alive!", with John Denver singing lead.

The song I remember was sung by a women, and the lyrics were just a bit different. In 1972 and 1973 a radio station KAAY AM in Little Rock, ARK. Every Saturday night they had a good Rock Music show that the DJ called Beeker Street, I think because that was the station was on Beeker St. in little rock. At some time during the show they would play that song. It was like their theme song. we used to pick it up in St.Louis, but I've long since forgotten the artist. I hope this helps.

Good job, Tiger1 I think half-an-hour wasn't very long for "rfrank" to have to wait. I knew I could count on some good 'Catter to come through quickly.

Cindy's Cryin' - Tom Paxton

Cindy's cryin' but it ain't no use -
She's got a habit and she can't get loose.
Stoppin' each and ev'ry man she meets,
Gonna be a hooker on Bleecker Street.

    On Bleecker Street,
Honey, makes you feel like cryin'.
You said you'd leave it and I hope you're tryin'.
Oh, they call it livin', Baby, someone's lyin'.

Police stopped her on the street today,
She was holdin' and they took her away.
Threw her in jail and they made her wait,
She was cryin' "Oh, Jesus, let me just get straight.

    Let me just get straight".
Honey, makes you feel like cryin'.
I know you can make it but you better stop tryin'.
Oh, they call it livin', Baby, someone's lyin'.

Cindy, Cindy, whatcha gonna do?
Got no money and you're way past due.
You got every last penny I had,
The man is restless and your credit is bad,

    Ah, your credit is bad,
Honey, makes you feel like cryin'.
We can make it but we better stop tryin'.
    Oh, I ain't leaving you and I ain't lyin'.

Now Cindy went South and took the cure,
"This time, Honey, I'm straight for sure".
Went to the corner to the grocery store,
You were gone ten minutes and I know you scored,

    And I know you scored,
    INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

Cindy's cryin' but it ain't no use,
She's got a habit and she can't get loose.
Stoppin' each and ev'ry man she meets,
Gonna be a hooker on Bleecker Street.

    On Bleecker Street,
Honey, makes you feel like cryin'.
Oh, they call it livin', and it feels like dyin'.
^^

That's Tom Paxton's song, which I think he called "Cindy's Crying." We were at the Philadelphia Festival just at the time he wrote the song. He and Midge were looking for a place to change their baby (facilities were less than amenable at Philly in those days) and they used our pickup camper. Tom sang the song while Midge changed the diaper (a reasonable division of labor?). That baby now has a PhD in something like Medieval Studies, I've been told, or some similarly obscure academic field.

Unfortunately, although I've always considered it a profoundly moving song, I don't have the words at this time. Other 'Catters surely will, though. Be patient.

Sandy

Heard this song (once) back in the 70's and it has haunted me since. Almost know the lyrics but REALLY want to get them or copy of the song.

"Cindy, Cindy, what you gonna do, you got a habit and you can't break loose. Stopp'en each and every man you meet, gonna be a hooker on Bleaker St. On Bleaker St., Oh,honey can't you see I'm cry'en Said you'd leave it, but you're not even trying Said your living, I can see you'r die'en"

Any help out there? If so drop a line to rfrank@trilithic.com
