Here's a fresh idea for a song challenge: Click here for article

February 12, 2008

Disabled LNG carrier now under tow

The Unified Command at Coast Guard Sector Boston is continuing to monitor and assist the Liquefied Natural Gas tanker Catalunya Spirit, which lost propulsion and became disabled and adrift east of Cape Cod Monday morning.

Teekay Corporation, which operates the Catalunya Spirit, contracted four tugboats and three technical representatives to assist the tanker. The tugboats Freedom and Liberty arrived on scene with the tanker about 10 p.m., Monday. The Freedom placed the Catalunya Spirit under tow, stopping the tanker's southeasterly movement, and is slowly heading west to a temporary offshore location, while conducting repairs.

The tug Iona McAllister is also on scene standing by. The salvage tug, Atlantic Salvor, is expected to arrive at 1 p.m., Tuesday to assist as necessary.

A Coast Guard marine inspector and two contracted technical representatives are on the Catalunya Spirit and an additional Coast Guard marine inspector is aboard the tug Liberty, which is on scene with the tanker. Today, an aircrew from Air Station Cape Cod is scheduled to transport a class society representative from Lloyds, and an additional technical representative, and additional Coast Guard personnel.

Though the vessel has not suffered any structural damage or released any substance, as part of the response plan, Coast Guard Sector Boston has notified the National Strike Team and is helping to coordinate salvage and pollution response assets. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba is on scene.

Aren't these ships supposed to be like super reliable, with redundant back-up systems? The Catalunya Spirit evidently was done in by a computer glitch which shut down its boilers. Not a good thing to happen when you're cruising off Cape Cod in a wintery gale. Some consider liquified natural gas dangerous, like it goes KABLAM if the containment cracked as the ship runs around on a ledge. But what do I know?

To lose that ship our captain cried,
It grives me heart full sore;
But to be done in by a computer crash,
It grives me ten times more, brave boys,
It grives me ten times more!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

That's one for the books -- just alongside of the naval vessel (carrier? destroyer?) that was being auto-conned by Microsoft NT onto a sandbar...

It was probably caused by a MAC :) (joking)

In all seriousness it is a concern up here in New Brunswick, Canada on the coast of the Bay of Fundy .... the link explains why.

According to the Lloyds List website the cause of the loss of power to the vessel's switchboard is still undetermined, although power has been restored to the switchboard.

The Boston Herald appears to have spoken only of "suspected computer failure" - so we may be premature in saying it was a computer crash wot dun it.

Nothing can go wrong....can go wrong....can go wrong...

This incident aboard the Catalunya Spirit given the potential for a catastropic explosion aboard these ships. The ship owners typically radiate to the public their complete confidence in the reliability of these ships, their crews, and their guidance systems, with regard to the safety of navigating narrow passage ways to refinery or potential refinery sites. I followed closely the recent public hearings we've had along the coast of Maine, from Eastport to Harpswell, where such company officials claimed that any such malfunction was extremely unlikely.

It is gratifying that the Coast Guard was able to reach this ship and tow it to safety, and that other emergency response vessels were ready to render asistance. But the incident was not supposed to happen, computer malfunction or whatever. No doubt someone plugged in the coffeemaker or hair dryer on the bridge and tripped the circuit breakers.

Hey, why wait for more facts? There's another nautical saga to compose!

Incidently "Catalunya Spirit" is an interesting name for this ship. There's a wine region called Catalunya in California, and there's a semiautonemous region of Spain known as Catalonia. There's even a race track or two called Catalunya.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Here's the latest update on the status of "Catalunya Spirit":

"While previous reports had identified a computer malfunction as the reason for the ship's loss of power, the unified command says that the repair crew aboard found two malfunctioning electrical relays and has ordered replacement parts, which are en route. The crew bypassed the relays to test the engine and found that in the event of an emergency, the engine will run."

Interesting.

Here's the final update in this saga:

"The LNG carrier Catalunya Spirit left its location off the coast of Gloucester, Mass., under its own power Friday night, after the Captain of the Port of Boston lifted the detention order placed when the ship lost propulsion 35 miles east of Chatham, Mass., early Monday morning, says a statement issued today by the Unified Command in chargeof the response.

The 933-foot tanker has been under positive control at the site of the future Neptune Offshore LNG facility off Eastern Point Light since Tuesday while technicians worked nearly around the clock to complete repairs.

At 8:40 p.m., Friday, the Captain of the Port of Boston, Coast Guard Capt. Gail Kulisch, reviewed and approved the final repair certification presented by Lloyd's Register and Teekay Corporation, signaling approval for the LNG tanker to re-enter international service.

After several days of troubleshooting, repair specialists have determined that a malfunctioning boiler feed pump, which supplies water to the main propulsion boilers, was the cause of the Catalunya Spirit's loss of power and propulsion.

"We are completely satisfied that the Catalunya Spirit is ready to return to service," said Kulisch, Federal On Scene Coordinator of the Unified Command. "There has been a thorough review of every system on board the ship, and I'm very impressed with the vessel owner's unprecedented commitment to fixing the problem."

Coast Guard, state and owner-contracted assets joined forces to respond to the call that the Catalunya Spirit had lost power and was slowly drifting toward George's Bank off the coast of Cape Cod. Tugs arrived on scene and gained control of the tanker well before it neared the shoals."

Yes, it's probably better that the Catalunya Spirit didn't end up on the shoals of George's Bank...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

And the Captain he called to the First Mate
Who called to the Chief Engineer,
"Why are we dead in the water?
There are shoals about, I fear!"

And the Chief he replied to the First Mate,
Who replied to the Captain in turn,
"It's a malfunctioning boiler feed pump,
We're buggered if we can't make 'er burn!"

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

What a bunch of lazy lay-abouts! Just because the Catalunya Spirit didn't sink or go KALPLOUIE, no one is even interested enough in the potential of this incident to fantasize a verse.

Pathetic!

Hi,

Well, with all these challenges, sometimes there's a small delay. But remember, it could have been worse than a small delay - it could have been like this:

Catalunya Spirit

It really was a fine day when we first set out to sea
On the Catalunya Spirit, my good friend Juan and me
It should have been an easy trip, though not exactly dull
With all those tons of liquid gas, below us in the hull

On Sunday we had the middle watch, though we didn't care for that
But "This day is for the spirits" was what Juan, to me, then said.
And though strictly Sunday was no more, I didn't disagree,
As a big flask Catalunya Spirit, he then showed to me

At our first drop it was one bell, and we saw that as a sign
So at two bells we took two more, and we started feeling fine
After three bells in this fashion that I drank with my dear friend
We didn't think or care about the way that this would end.

At four bells we did some singing, or at least I think we did
At five, I can't say for sure, but I think we drank a bit
Six and seven I can't recall but I do remember eight
For then we found the bottle empty, oh such cruel fate

But Juan said there'd been plenty, and that I surely was to blame
And with the bottle in his hand he then tried to take his aim
But the bottle went a different way from where he had intended
As it swerved towards the console where with a crash it landed.

Well we sort of sobered up a bit, when we saw that mess of glass
While some missed drops did seep into the circuitry, alas
So when a short while afterwards the ship was acting queer
We had cleaned up everything before the captain did appear

So when he asked: "What is the matter, what is going on?"
I said: "It is the boiler sir, something down there is gone."
Yet Juan at the same time spoke, it was the engine that he named.
But soon we both agreed; it's the computer that we blamed.

Well because of "the computer", for a week we made no speed
And drifting there towards a shore we could no longer heed
We had to suffer how some tug boats tugged our craft away
And worse of all, for such time lost, we only got half pay

So if on Catalunya Spirit, a-sailing you should go
If you should get the middle watch, there's something you should know
To bring a bottle on your watch, remember that's not right
'Cause surely you'll need two of those to make it through the night.

Mysha-

You've really done a good job on this one, risen to the challenge. One of my bandmates was lamenting that without a more compelling disaster there was really no song to be composed. I'm not sure if he was implying that we should do something more to ensure disaster. That would be wrong! But it would make for a greater song!

Such scruples did not stop me when I first read the tale of the cow who sank a Japanese fishing trawler, but that's another tail: Click at Your Own Risk!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
