Interesting band on Later With Jools Holland last night. "The Imagined Village". Huge band, great sound - traditional folk music with attitude! Fronting the band? Martin and Eliza Carthy. Jools introduced the song as lasting 6.5 minutes. Sadly the usual attitude to Folk Music previously shown on the programme prevailed, they only got one song. Why no interview ?

Martin Carthy was certainly there but lead vocals on Cold Haily Rainy Night were by someone looking remarkably like Chris Wood, with an assortment of Coppers backing. "Fronting" the performance was undoubtedly Johnny Kalsi of the Dhol Foundation. The Imagined Village is a Simon Emmerson project in the making for at least five years and which launched at WOMAD last year.

It's on the iPlayer for the next week and the song comes in at 19.10.

It's extremely hard to comprehend that anyone has managed to avoid the massive 24/7 publicity that the Imagined Village has generated over the past several years.
Especially as the song performed won Best Traditional Track at the Folk Awards only last week following the album's loudly trumpeted launch last year.

Well, I'd dimly heard of the Imagined Village, but wasn't really aware of what it was all about sonically until I saw it the other night...then again I don't tend to take my cue as to what to listen to from corporate awards ceremonies and the like.

I generally prefer my folk to be acoustic, though I liked what Carthy was playing on guitar (what I could hear of it). The drums, IMHO were somewhat intrusive and to my ears detracted from the sense of the song and the instrumental arrangement. Will doubtless appeal to the crossover market, though; and of course there's nothing wrong with that in itself.

Thanks, no prob... it's just that you gotta hear about something for the first time somewhere! I've only heard of IV because it was performed in Bristol recently. I've not read about it here (or anywhere else, come to that, but then I don't get time to read much music stuff - too busy doing music stuff!).

I was mighty annoyed I missed it on Jules....I assume it's replayable?

Thanks Ian. Was able to view it on youtube. Was that Aaron Jones on cittern? Didn't get enough solid looks to tell. But, yes that was definately Chris Wood on lead vocal. Great stuff, though w/all the quick cuts it was a little disconcerting, visually. I'd 'heard' of the Imagined Village, but now that I've 'seen' it I get the idea. Would love to see a whole live show. Is there a DVD?

Chris Wood was performing CHRN (the Shagging Song as he calls it) at a solo gig a few days after the Brewery Beano at which he'd only been allowed to do half of it and he reminded his audience to imagine another 15 musicians including "a huge fucking dhol" (his words).

I first heard some bits of TIV at the fRoots 25th anniversary party when Simon Emmerson (who was DJ-ing) played what he had just been recording, including the Weller/Carthy Barleycorn. It's now coming up to the fR 29th anniversary. At the time of the launch at last year's WOMAD there was a massive thread about the project here and it has toured extensively since, culminating at the RFH last November. Hard indeed to miss.

Yes, unlike what feels like the vast majority, I don't really get Tam Lin.
Of course, the idea and the imagery of setting it in modern day clubland is brilliant but I don't find Benjamin Zephaniah's performance quite gets the point across.

Shame they cut the interview


They only got one song but on that show its the minutes that are allocated - so one song, but a six and a half minute one.


Give people a break for not having heard of Imagined Village, in the world of folk music it may have been a big project, but big in a very small pond.


I loved it - its an addition to more traditional ways of presenting songs, not a replacement and its great that they and others are doing it.

I hope that more UK Asian people collaborate more with white UK folk musicians - seems a good reflection of where I live anyway.

I think you are aware that I believe the quality of artists like Chris Wood, Carthy's, and many of the others involved in TIV (and elsewhere) should be trumpeted from the roof tops to be the essential and vitally important artists that they are.

Total waste of time. No interview? I'm surprised the plug wasn't pulled before they finished. For a show that has had as many low spots as high spots, this must have been amoungst the lowest. A disaster. For anyone who watched on the Beeb web site you could also check out Celtic Connections. I had recomended this to some friends to watch on Sunday evening. Wished I hadn't. But hey, what do I know.

Abuse in my experience comes from damaged and embittered people whose use of foul and abusive language/statements say far more about them than it ever could about the recipient. Sadly, for some, it seems the relative safety and anonymity afforded by cyberspace affords them carte blanche to behave in as simian and obnoxious a manner as they please, without fear of any consequences.

Come on now, I am no prude, but I don't want to see words like that on a forum about the imagined village. And getting back to thread, Eliza for one has appeared a few times I believe on Jools' show, so before we talk about conspiracies against folk here, has any one seen those appearances, and did she get the same airtime, interviews, etc? I have seen some clips on you tube, but have not seen the full show, so maybe someone could tell me. She also is on the third volume of Jools and Orchestra Friends CD, so to be fair, hard core Jools fans should know her. As to people like Chris Wood, etc, it seems it would have been nice to show some recognition, so that one I'll give you. Just lets stop with the female anatomy slang.

Sorry if I hit a nerve or was too close to the bone. But. This was my reaction. I was looking forward to a treat, some of my long time favourite performers on prime time TV. An event not to be missed.

What did I get?

Some wacky amateur types acting out some fantasy they previously rehersed in front of their bedroom mirrors.

How much this was set up to fit the beeb's preconception of how to present FOLK music, I am not sure. FOLK usualy means let's have a laugh at some finger-in-the-ear weirdoes. Type casting or what?
