It was the album that made me fall in love with sea music, and remains my alltime favorite sea music recording. Peggy Seeger does banjo accompaniment on some tracks, and there's a harmonica player whose playing is so precise, it could be easily mistaken for a concertina playing single notes (can't remember the name. I think it was listed with a first initial, then last name). I used to check it out of the public library, but it was eventually discontinued, or maybe stolen or damaged beyond repair, I don't know. I never found it anywhere else, until I joined Mudcat, and Liam's Brother kindly taped it for me after I mentioned it in a thread about 7 years ago. This is a completely different recording than "Blow Boys Blow," or Lloyd's "Leviathan!" which are available on CD. Chanteyranger |

I recently put to air a whole program of tracks from LPs that have never made it to CD, and I played a cut from that album. Also Hadden, Rothfield and Carr; Declan Affley; Dennis Tracey; Tracey, Munro, Tracey; Art Thieme (I guess some of Art's back-catalog is out on CD, but not all of it); Billy Edd Wheeler; Bill Davis; and the Debby McClatchy album, Lady Luck. This confirms my memory that one of the albums was called The Old Time Banjo Project. When Banjo Ray brought up The Old Time String Band Project, I thought he might be referring to the same record, but none of the people he mentioned as being on that album - Uncle Willie and the Brandy Snifters and Stu Jamieson's Boys - is listed on Old Time Banjo. So the only way to clear this up is for the Powers That Be to release them both - along with The Blues Project - on CD. Mike |

Maybe writing them would help light a fire under them for issue of these. The Rhino label has also reissued from the Elektra vaults and in recent years, they've had Tom Rush, Gibson & Camp, Bikel, Brand, Josh White, Cathy & Carol and others get limited pressings. Let these two companies, Rhino and Collector's Choice know that there's a need. |

The one I'd really like on CD now is it's sister CD also on Elektra called The String Band Project. It had some superb tracks by people like Uncle Willie and the Brandy Snifters and Stu Jamieson's Boys. It did a great deal to turn me on to Old Time music a loooong time ago, and totally changed my life. Ray |

MT used none of the Leader recordings for their release. However, it shows fourteen Topic tracks (10 on A World without Horses. 4 on Voice of the People) which were recorded by Bill Leader, some of them with Peter Bellamy. It would need a closer inspection than I can give it at the moment. However, of these fourteen tracks, a number of titles duplicate what's on the two Leader LPs. It may be though that they are different takes to the ones on the LPs and this is something I can't check. I did though notice two different recordings of the Female Drummer, one on Topic and one on Leader. The Topic take is dated 03.08.74 while the Leader is 12.02.77. Ditto for The Pretty Ploughboy. TSCD 514 was 08.06.74, while LED 2111 was 12.02.77. The next time I see Reg Hall I'll ask him. |
