"Biutiful" .... directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Incredible acting by Javier Bardem. This has to be one of the most compelling movies I have ever seen.

"Small Engine Repair" Got it on DVD recently though I think it was originally released about 5 years ago. Maybe not the greatest movie of all time but worth a look if you fancy a good story with a musical theme. Here's a traler Small Engine Repair

Finally and long overdue:

Terminator 3: extra full star for the ending.

A league of their own: Tom Hanks really, really acting, the evolution of his character amazing. Also, I didn't know half that stuff...

Go see "Cave of Forgotten Dreams," Werner Herzog's documentary about 32,000 year old cave art - in 3D if possible.

An archaeologist even plays a familiar tune on a stone-age bone flute.

Just watched Running the Sahara.

Excellent!

A documentary produced by Matt Damon and distributed by National Geographic - 3 guys, one American, one Canadian and one Taiwanese, who ran the length of the Sahara from the Atlantic coast of Senegal to the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea. 110 days with no days off.

Very well done.

"Running the Sahara" was on Netflix streaming also.

Their monthly subscription service seems to be a good value. Son (with his Dad's consent,) has added my home computer to their monthly subscription account. I think it costs about $8.00 per month.

Clash of the Titan 2010, (Netflix mailed to our house)

Excellent effects, better story than I thought it would be, generally excellent acting, Sam Worthington's accent kinda wavered between his native Australian and the neutral English accent that nearly everyone else was affecting. Why does Hollywood so often use English accents in the portrayal of classical Greeks and Romans? But it is is early in Sam's career. He is improving.

A very nice little comedy was "Feed the Fish" which had Tony Shaloub as a producer and actor. A fun picture of rural Wisconsin. You might want to read the blurb to see if the plot is your cup of tea.

Leaves of Grass, another fun little movie which Carol knew from watching was written by someone who knows rural Oklahoma quite well. Tim Blake Nelson

seen a good few 'quality' indie/arthouse films in the last month
but today I nominate

"Meet Dave" (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765476/

by any reasonable standards it's complete CGI dominated rubbish.

But the wife is feeling very low and demoralised by work pressures
at the monent;
and by good chance of early evening TV scheduling
this modern day 'Jerry Lewis' style children's comedy
took her mind off her problems and had her laughing herself silly for 90 min..

Inception was good. It wasn't cheerful. It didn't leave you feeling marvelous. But it was pretty good.

I find that Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be attracted lately to very heavy movies of dark psychological torture and suffering...such as "Shutter Island" and "Inception". He does them well, but I'm not sure they're what I'm exactly yearning to devote a few hours of my life to.

We haven't been watching too many movies, lately, as we were working our way through all of A Touch of Frost on neflix. We were, ah...addicted, ya might say.:-)

We then moved on to Midsomer Murders of which we've seen about three episodes. Really enjoyed them, too, but not as addictive as DI Frost or is it DCI?lol

Tonight, we made it to a movie, via netflix. A comedy called "In and Out" with Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Matt Dillon, Debbie Reynolds, Wilfrid Brimley, Bob Newhart, Tom Selleck as a gay reporter, very well done, and a host of other well-known characters directed by Frank Oz. It was really fun, good, and poignant. A feel good movie with a twist.

Just watched "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy".
I was really looking forward to it as I was a fan of both the novels and the TV series with Alec Guiness but came away dissapointed.
As good as the TV series was, the slow pace of delivery that made Guinness' "Smiley" so appealing, doesn't work nearly as well in a 2 hour movie format and the producer seemed to be slavishly and reverentially copying the original.
Some good performances and I would have loved it as a remake of the whole TV series but a different approach was needed for the cinema.
I found myself wondering what the younger members of audience, who may not of read any of the Le Carre novels and were too young to have seen the TV series, could have made of it.
At least it makes the audience work, rather than constantly explaining itself in the way a lot of todays dumbed-down offerings do, but, for me, the effort was poorly rewarded.

Der Untergang is a great movie. Bruno Ganz's portrayal of the Nazi monster in his final days is an acting tour de force which has to be seen to be comprehended.

You can watch a trailer of it Here .

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately?

Der Untergang is excellent, but it's not (IMO) a depiction of a monster. It's a depiction of a tragically flawed little man with some very strong oratorical skills who unfortunately rose to very high political power in an unstable time and whose rise resulted in the development of a monstrous political system. It is the systems which are monstrous, and that sure wasn't the only one. There are several more mostrous systems around right now, usually run by tragically flawed little men who rose to very high political power.

They all imagine they are doing what is "right", what is just, what is good, noble, and proper. They think THEY are right. They're absolutely sure of it. (Just like most of the people reading these lines are sure they are right.) They're sure that those who disagree with them about anything are wrong. Dead wrong. Evil, in fact. And that's what makes them so dangerous. They'd rather be "right" than be merciful.

Hitler sincerely thought he was saving Germany from the most evil and terrible forces, and he created an evil and terrible system while trying to do it.

I see people very similar to Hitler in high places now. Some of them are governing in what we call "democracies". They are dangerous men, and they are in command of exceedingly dangerous powers.

But they are not monsters. They are just flawed men out of their depth. They're rather be right than be merciful. They're rather win the next battle than secure a lasting peace. They'd rather compete for final "victory" than share and share alike. The systems they have created are monstrous.

_Tortilla Flat_, at last, to pay homage to the source of the delightful song "Torelli", which I have sung for many years. I suppose it's not as good as the book, but it is fun, and incidentally it makes no concealment of the nasty side of peasant mores.

Just watched the First of the EXTENDED set of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Trilogy!!! It( the 3 "films" packaged more like a TV series) includes more than 2 hours of additional material and is much closer to the books , it has room for more Character development especially Lizabeth Salander which I felt the shorter Cinema release lacked, and therefore does more justice to Larsons original concept. I am looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series.

We finally finished watching all eight seasons of an Australian television series called McLeod's Daughters; each season at over 25 episodes. I suppose some might call it nighttime soap opera, but we found it quite engaging and enjoyed it very much.

I watched some others in the meantime which were absolutely riveting. One we just finished was produced by and starred Wes Studi. It was produced in 2009 and is called, The Only Good Indian. A lot of us already know about how Native Americans' and First Nations' children were torn from their homes and placed in boarding schools and much worse. The movie is about that with some well-done inner conflicts among the various characters. Takes place in Kansas. Quite well done, imo.

Another stunning indie film, which I watched recently, was The Unmistaken Child, a documentary. It had a profound effect on me.

Cosi, was hilarious, touching, and uplifting. Inexperienced guy is hired to run crafts, etc. for folks in an insane asylum. There were some outstanding actors in it, one of whom convinces him they should do a production of the opera by Mozart, Cosi fan Tutte.

One more documentary, highly recommended, Blossoms of Fire, about the families, the women especially, of Juchitan, Isthmus Zapotec in Mexico. The outside world calls it the last matriarchal society, but the women do not call themselves that. From what I saw, as much as there can be, it was an even society between men and women, though the majority of men do give their earnings to the women who then manage it for the entire family. Very much a sharing community and trying very hard to keep from losing their language and their culture. It was beautiful to watch.

I typed this using a voice-recognition program. Any typos or mistakes are entirely its fault. Next time I will proofread.

(Okay, I lied. Came back to check it and couldn't stand the mistakes. I have to speak more slowly!)

I forgot to mention an excellent movie we just watched: The Ip Man. it starts out in 1935 just before the Chinese invade Japan and is about A Wing Chung master who was very careful about using his martial arts. He was the best there was and once the Chinese came in he was eventually forced into a tournament by one of their generals who wanted to fight the best as he felt Japanese kung fu was superior to Chinese martial arts. It's based on a true story. Ip Man became Bruce Lee's teacher.
