Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jul 11 - 08:42 PM Docu. on netflix: Beyond the Burly Q. Very good. Lots of interviews with the women of burlesque, with the history and film footage, plus Alan Alda talking about growing up travelling with the troupe his parents were in. It was really good! |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 03 Jul 11 - 08:06 PM I will soon. Film4 has got an Ingmar Bergman mini-series coming up. Incidentally, I was at the 'Magritte: The Pleasure Principle' at the Tate, Liverpool today, and I thought his 'Homage a Erich Stroheim' was hilarious. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 03 Jul 11 - 03:03 PM Finally got to see The King's Speech. No wonder it was raved about. I really enjoyed it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 03 Jul 11 - 11:54 AM Yes, but, as previously answered, none recent. Watched "Two For the Road" on DVD last night. I think I appreciated it even more than when it was new back in 1967. The difference? Forty years being married. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Wesley S Date: 03 Jul 11 - 08:34 AM Doug R and I can agree on something. "The American" was an awful movie. The ending made no sense at all. Just a lot of people shooting each other. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 03 Jul 11 - 12:56 AM Inception!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 02 Jul 11 - 04:42 PM I haven't seen it DougR but I won't watch a movie where Clooney is the only star. So I won't be watching it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: DougR Date: 02 Jul 11 - 04:25 PM I saw a bad one last night. "The American" with George Clooney. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 02 Jul 11 - 04:07 PM JtS, thanks for the recommendation for Feed the Fish. I just finished watching it. What an adorable, quirky feel-good movie. Love Shaloub and Corbin. The rest of the actors were great, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 02 Jul 11 - 01:41 PM seen a good few 'quality' indie/arthouse films in the last month but today I nominate "Meet Dave" (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765476/ by any reasonable standards it's complete CGI dominated rubbish. But the wife is feeling very low and demoralised by work pressures at the monent; and by good chance of early evening TV scheduling this modern day 'Jerry Lewis' style children's comedy took her mind off her problems and had her laughing herself silly for 90 min.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 02 Jul 11 - 01:33 PM Clash of the Titan 2010, (Netflix mailed to our house) Excellent effects, better story than I thought it would be, generally excellent acting, Sam Worthington's accent kinda wavered between his native Australian and the neutral English accent that nearly everyone else was affecting. Why does Hollywood so often use English accents in the portrayal of classical Greeks and Romans? But it is is early in Sam's career. He is improving. A very nice little comedy was "Feed the Fish" which had Tony Shaloub as a producer and actor. A fun picture of rural Wisconsin. You might want to read the blurb to see if the plot is your cup of tea. Leaves of Grass, another fun little movie which Carol knew from watching was written by someone who knows rural Oklahoma quite well. Tim Blake Nelson |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Sawzaw Date: 29 Jun 11 - 08:41 PM Super 8 wasn't bad. Reminiscent of ET. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Janie Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:51 PM "Running the Sahara" was on Netflix streaming also. Their monthly subscription service seems to be a good value. Son (with his Dad's consent,) has added my home computer to their monthly subscription account. I think it costs about $8.00 per month. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:37 PM Defiance was very good as well. It is a VERY different movie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Beer Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:10 PM Thanks Jack. I just recently signed up to Netflick and it is great. Just watched a movie called "Defiance", great flick. Thanks again for your suggestion. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 28 Jun 11 - 10:53 PM Hot Tub Time Machine (free on NetFlix) Its better than the title would make you think. I admit that the title sets a low bar. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Janie Date: 28 Jun 11 - 10:25 PM Just watched Running the Sahara. Excellent! A documentary produced by Matt Damon and distributed by National Geographic - 3 guys, one American, one Canadian and one Taiwanese, who ran the length of the Sahara from the Atlantic coast of Senegal to the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea. 110 days with no days off. Very well done. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 25 Jun 11 - 07:42 PM Go see "Cave of Forgotten Dreams," Werner Herzog's documentary about 32,000 year old cave art - in 3D if possible. An archaeologist even plays a familiar tune on a stone-age bone flute. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Mrrzy Date: 25 Jun 11 - 06:32 PM Finally and long overdue: Terminator 3: extra full star for the ending. A league of their own: Tom Hanks really, really acting, the evolution of his character amazing. Also, I didn't know half that stuff... |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: paul vaughan Date: 25 Jun 11 - 07:07 AM "Small Engine Repair" Got it on DVD recently though I think it was originally released about 5 years ago. Maybe not the greatest movie of all time but worth a look if you fancy a good story with a musical theme. Here's a traler Small Engine Repair |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: number 6 Date: 24 Jun 11 - 11:13 PM "Biutiful" .... directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Incredible acting by Javier Bardem. This has to be one of the most compelling movies I have ever seen. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Beer Date: 19 Jun 11 - 10:20 PM Maybe "Glory" was mentioned in the 400 plus previous threads, i don't know but it is an excellent flick if you are into the American civil war. Wow!! Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 19 Jun 11 - 12:44 AM Not a movie, but a BBC series we started watching at netflix tonight: George Gently, an excellent chief inspector crime show set in the 60s in Northumberland, though filmed, at least the two we've seen, so far, in Ireland. Reminded us a bit of Inspector Morse, as Gently, too, has a younger "sidekick," is from the Yard and a bit curmudgeonly. Quite good! |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 28 May 11 - 07:18 PM The Field, starring a younger Richard Harris, Tom Berrenger and others. Really dramatic, sad, beautiful Irish movie. Great dance music and filmed on location in Ireland. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 21 May 11 - 11:16 PM Just watched Stone of Destiny about Ian Hamilton and the other students who took the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey returning it to Scotland in 1950. The real Ian Hamilton even played a small part, though I didn't know until it was over, so can't place him. The only thing I didn't like was the arrangement of and woman who sang Wild Mountain Thyme at the end. She sounded slightly flat and, imo, it was over-produced. Still a good flick.:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 20 May 11 - 10:53 PM "Citizen Ruth" (1996) Early movie from "Election" & "Sideways" Director/writer Alexander Payne A wry black comedy satirising both sides of the pro/anti choice abortion 'debate'. Would work well in a very entertaining themed double bill for intelligent teenagers with "Juno" |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: 3refs Date: 12 May 11 - 09:53 AM The Last Waltz! Can't believe this thing is 35 years old and I just saw it for the first time a few months ago! Ran out and bought it. I've watched(or listened)to it 20 times or more since then. Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson better known as "The Band", makes one proud to be a Canadian! Levon is an honorary Canuck! The King's Speech. Watching King George VI stomp and curse left me speechless with laughter! |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Neil D Date: 11 May 11 - 10:36 PM Kat, I think you mean "Goya's Ghost" and you're right, it's an excellent movie. Javier Bardem is impressively villainous, yet complex, in the role of the Inquisitor turned Napoleonic prosecutor. |

The cinematography was perfect) Firewall Passenger 57 The Italian Job (The original) Second Hand Lions Son In Law |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Beer Date: 04 Apr 11 - 11:02 PM Here is a very moving, sad, but to the point of what was happening in Ireland. http://www.watchmovieon.com/movies/fifty-dead-men-walking Plot: Based on Martin McGartland's shocking real life story, Martin is a young lad from west Belfast in the late 1980s who is recruited by the British Police to spy on the IRA. He works his way up the ranks as a volunteer for the IRA whilst feeding information to his British handler and saving lives in the process; until one day he is exposed, captured and tortured to within an inch of his life.
