Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Desert Dancer Date: 04 Nov 12 - 01:17 AM Just saw a sweet movie on Netflix: "Sweet Land". Based on the short story ""A Gravestone Made of Wheat," by Will Weaver, it tells the story of a mail-order bride arriving in Minnesota from Germany in 1920, and her difficulty in integrating in the community. It takes a little bit of suspension of disbelief for minor historical inaccuracies, and the presence of some familiar actors in unfamiliar roles/accents. Also, apparently if you speak German or Norwegian that's kind of a mess. official website But, its heart is in the right place. :-) ~ Becky in Long Beach |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 22 Aug 12 - 10:17 PM "The Time Traveler's Wife" was on TV tonight. Sat and watched it with the wife on her insistence. She's read the book, and seen it at the Cinema. I thought it was an ok romantic drama with a slight Sci fi twist. My wife was sobbing her eyes out throughout and almost looked grief stricken by the time the end credits rolled... She says it's one of her most favourite films ever. Eric Bana shows his arse quite a lot. Funnily enough, he's one of her favourite movie stars. This may be a strategic DVD to rent for a night in if for any reason you are in your wife's bad books.. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: JohnInKansas Date: 22 Aug 12 - 06:28 PM It's rather unusual, but I have been "watching" quite a few movies lately. Since our recent relocation, we're rather cramped for storage space, and one of the attempts to reduce what needs(?) to be stored was based on the smaller space required to store DVDs rather than VHS tapes, so I've been transferring some of "our" (I claim mostly "her") tapes to disk. Unfortunately, copying them requires running them in "real time" so for the "interesting" ones I've "sort of watched" while they're running. The current count is at 281 titles "watched" in this way -- (?) beginning with "Apollo 13" and winding up at "Zulu," with every thing from "Black Adder" and "Avenger" episodes (and of course all 13 of "her" episodes of "Cadfael") through some 3 Stooges shorts, about 3 of the "Road to ..." flicks, and even a poor copy of "Barbarella" mixed in. I very much doubt that "we" had anything in our VHS stuff that was released since about 1970, though, so recommendations based on our library wouldn't be of much interest to anyone looking for current suggestions. Of course due to transfer failures, some of them required "watching" 2 or 3 times, and the 2 hour limit on what can be put on a DVD means that some had to be split between a couple of disks. "Dune" is running now, but will take (at least) three disks, and another that I've defered for later apparently will need four. We also seem to have around 400 commercial DVD releases, and a handful of them might have been released sometime after 1970, but none that I can think of that likely were produced since about 1980 or so. Season 1 of "Xena" (a gift) and Lin's recently acquired "all six seasons of 'Bones'" would be exceptions. The question of "where did they all come from" occurs; but the real question is "WHY! WHY! WHY! THE %@$#!^ have we got all this $!#@% SH*T???? (And why are we keeping it?) But it all fits in a much smaller space now. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Feb 12 - 08:27 AM Drive - This turned out to be an absolutely superb movie! Ryan Goslin is a very good actor, and everyone else in the film does their party perfectly too. Talk about a good script! Most "action" films are really stupid...this one is anything but. Conan - Okay, if you happen to like "sword and sandal" epics...or if you just like the Conan stories...this one is quite good. It's better, in my opinion, than the Schwarzenneger ones were, though they were pretty good too. Definitely a fun way to spend an hour and a half. The Rite - A film about demonic possession, this is not your standard horror fare, but a serious film with good acting. Anthony Hopkins is excellent, as always, and the subject is treated in a sober, thought-provoking fashion. Really gives some food for thought. There's something going on with these sort of cases, and I'm not sure what it is, but it's serious business. True Grit - A fabulously good western. Couldn't be better. The scene where the plucky young girl bargains for a better price with the slippery old businessman is worth the price of the entire show. The Irishman - Tremendously gritty film about the rise and fall of an organized crime boss in Cleveland in the 1970s. The Ides of March - Great film about ruthlessness and corruption on the political campaign trail in an American election. Should be required viewing for all American voters, I think. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 27 Nov 11 - 11:47 AM I forgot to mention an excellent movie we just watched: The Ip Man. it starts out in 1935 just before the Chinese invade Japan and is about A Wing Chung master who was very careful about using his martial arts. He was the best there was and once the Chinese came in he was eventually forced into a tournament by one of their generals who wanted to fight the best as he felt Japanese kung fu was superior to Chinese martial arts. It's based on a true story. Ip Man became Bruce Lee's teacher. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Nov 11 - 10:27 PM We finally finished watching all eight seasons of an Australian television series called McLeod's Daughters; each season at over 25 episodes. I suppose some might call it nighttime soap opera, but we found it quite engaging and enjoyed it very much. I watched some others in the meantime which were absolutely riveting. One we just finished was produced by and starred Wes Studi. It was produced in 2009 and is called, The Only Good Indian. A lot of us already know about how Native Americans' and First Nations' children were torn from their homes and placed in boarding schools and much worse. The movie is about that with some well-done inner conflicts among the various characters. Takes place in Kansas. Quite well done, imo. Another stunning indie film, which I watched recently, was The Unmistaken Child, a documentary. It had a profound effect on me. Cosi, was hilarious, touching, and uplifting. Inexperienced guy is hired to run crafts, etc. for folks in an insane asylum. There were some outstanding actors in it, one of whom convinces him they should do a production of the opera by Mozart, Cosi fan Tutte. One more documentary, highly recommended, Blossoms of Fire, about the families, the women especially, of Juchitan, Isthmus Zapotec in Mexico. The outside world calls it the last matriarchal society, but the women do not call themselves that. From what I saw, as much as there can be, it was an even society between men and women, though the majority of men do give their earnings to the women who then manage it for the entire family. Very much a sharing community and trying very hard to keep from losing their language and their culture. It was beautiful to watch. I typed this using a voice-recognition program. Any typos or mistakes are entirely its fault. Next time I will proofread.
(Okay, I lied. Came back to check it and couldn't stand the mistakes. I have to speak more slowly!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Micca Date: 14 Oct 11 - 07:41 PM Just watched the First of the EXTENDED set of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Trilogy!!! It( the 3 "films" packaged more like a TV series) includes more than 2 hours of additional material and is much closer to the books , it has room for more Character development especially Lizabeth Salander which I felt the shorter Cinema release lacked, and therefore does more justice to Larsons original concept. I am looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Sep 11 - 05:58 PM Der Untergang is excellent, but it's not (IMO) a depiction of a monster. It's a depiction of a tragically flawed little man with some very strong oratorical skills who unfortunately rose to very high political power in an unstable time and whose rise resulted in the development of a monstrous political system. It is the systems which are monstrous, and that sure wasn't the only one. There are several more mostrous systems around right now, usually run by tragically flawed little men who rose to very high political power. They all imagine they are doing what is "right", what is just, what is good, noble, and proper. They think THEY are right. They're absolutely sure of it. (Just like most of the people reading these lines are sure they are right.) They're sure that those who disagree with them about anything are wrong. Dead wrong. Evil, in fact. And that's what makes them so dangerous. They'd rather be "right" than be merciful. Hitler sincerely thought he was saving Germany from the most evil and terrible forces, and he created an evil and terrible system while trying to do it. I see people very similar to Hitler in high places now. Some of them are governing in what we call "democracies". They are dangerous men, and they are in command of exceedingly dangerous powers. But they are not monsters. They are just flawed men out of their depth. They're rather be right than be merciful. They're rather win the next battle than secure a lasting peace. They'd rather compete for final "victory" than share and share alike. The systems they have created are monstrous. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Fred McCormick Date: 19 Sep 11 - 07:34 AM Der Untergang is a great movie. Bruno Ganz's portrayal of the Nazi monster in his final days is an acting tour de force which has to be seen to be comprehended. You can watch a trailer of it Here . |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: C-flat Date: 19 Sep 11 - 03:58 AM Just watched "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". I was really looking forward to it as I was a fan of both the novels and the TV series with Alec Guiness but came away dissapointed. As good as the TV series was, the slow pace of delivery that made Guinness' "Smiley" so appealing, doesn't work nearly as well in a 2 hour movie format and the producer seemed to be slavishly and reverentially copying the original. Some good performances and I would have loved it as a remake of the whole TV series but a different approach was needed for the cinema. I found myself wondering what the younger members of audience, who may not of read any of the Le Carre novels and were too young to have seen the TV series, could have made of it. At least it makes the audience work, rather than constantly explaining itself in the way a lot of todays dumbed-down offerings do, but, for me, the effort was poorly rewarded. C-flat |
