Actually LF, I would say that Chris Evans is a pretty genuine person. He tends to be very spontaneous, which means that on some occasions he behaves like a prat, but on others he is open hearted ang generous.
I recall when he owned his own radio station, on day it was lovely weather out, so suddenly decided to give all the staff a day off. He stapped behind with a handfull of others and they pressed all the buttons themselves.
I've not heard the item myself, so don't know what is said, but suspect he probably gives a fair hearing to what is said.

Of course, if you want to hear a real prat, try Steve Wright.
Quack!

This wireless keyboard doesn't do much for preventing typos. It also means I am just a bit too far from the screen to see the mistakes. Let's face it, from 5 foot, a d looks sufficiently like an s for you not to spot you have pressed the key next to the one you thought.
Quack!

And I thought it was June Tabor on his show - though I couldn't work out who Mr Drum was...

I just had a listen. It was a short item found about 20 minutes into the programme, including a bit about the instruments and a short piece of live playing. The listen again links from this page for a few more days from this posting.
Evans is very enthusiastic that someone can actually be bothered to come in and chat with him. As for the conversation, he treated it seriously without trying to make a joke of it. It is obvious that Chris Evans knows about as much as most of the rest of the public, but is actually willing to listen and learn rather than just make fun of something traditional.
I don't imaging that this short spot will do a great deal to raise the public profile of pipe and tabor, but it's more than Mike Harding's programme ever does.
Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

I spoke to Steve Rowley, the interviewee who played the pipe and tabor on the Chris Evans show. Steve was quite impressed with Chris and said that he (Chris) had done his homework on the subject. BBC2 is not an intellectuall station, it is light drive-time entertainment, and apart from the fact that Steve had a job to get a word in edgeways, I thought it went quite well. The point of the seemingly irrelevant questioning about Steve's religion was just to make sure that the interviewee did not just trot out a prepared speech. As for raising the profile of the pipe and tabor, well it might, as the BBC has now linked to the Taborers Society website (http://www.pipeandtabor.org/) so at least some people might hear about it. And now you know about it!

Thursday's 'endangered instrument' on the Chris Evans show is the hurdy-gurdy, presented my Metheglin.

Cheers

Tradsinger
