I am looking for recordings to play on my kids show on Phoenix FM this Saturday. Phoenix is a not-for -profit community radio station for Halifax and the surrounding area (that's Halifax in Yorkshire, UK. The theme this week is skipping. Probably the most accessable recordings of English skipping songs are on Children's Singing Games. Saydisc CD-SDL 338. These are authentic field recordings made by Father Damien Webb in the 1960s. The disc is currently advertised on Amazon UK, so presumably still in catalogue. However, it's doubtful you'd get it through them by Saturday. Perhaps the best resort would be to ring Saydisc and ask them to rush you a copy.

Alternatively, there are various kids recordings which are downloadable from the Smithsonian Global website at http://www.smithsonianglobalsound.org/ . In particular, look for Field Trip England, a Jean Ritchie edited collection.

There's also at least one CD of Scottish Children's songs in the Alan Lomax collection on Rounder, plus a wonderful CD of Caribbean kids songs (Brown Girl In The Ring).

If all else fails, PM me and I'll email you a couple of items.

Plus there's a lot more in there as well as children's songs. The fruits of The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip, with almost 700 streamed recordings, plus a lot of associated material. Why oh why couldn't we have had a resource like this fifty years ago?

Library of Congress is a place online where you'll nearly always find something to interest you....for hours, days, months....I been going there for the last eight years and never get tired of finding new/old stuff.

why can't we do both? ["Both" meaning type the rhymes and sing/chant them for your library and/or where ever else we want to because we not only "want to hear it", we want to read it and analyze it and discuss it and see it- "it" meaning children's rhymes and chants].

After all, it is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time {figuratively speaking}.

So thank you very much for suggesting what we should do. I'll continue doing what I have been doing and what I wanna do and more. And I figure other people will too.

Early films of folkloric events are priceless records, infinitely more desirable than mere recordings or other records. I bet there are plenty in the Opie archives. When I look back on my notated collection it makes me think how much more valuable it would have been if I'd been able to film it.

Peter Kennedy issued some of the children’s songs, rhymes and games recorded by Father Damian Webb on his Folktrax label. You can search for them on Folktrax archive website: : http://folktrax-archive.org/index.htm Originals now at British Library, but some (not all) Folktrax CDs available also from Camsco.
