Radriano and I will be doing a concert called "Chanteys: The African American and Caribbean Connection." This Saturday, February 23, 3:00-4:00, aboard the square-rigged ship Balclutha, Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco. If you're within range of SF, come see us. You'll be encouraged to sing along on the choruses. Admission is simply the cost of boarding the historic vessels at the pier: Adults, $5, ages 15 and under, free. Free with national park passes. No reservations. Ticket booth is halfway up Hyde Street Pier. Information at 415-447-5000, or see the park's website at www.nps.gov/safr. Hope to see you there!

I also regret that I live too far away from your concert to attend it.

It sounds like it'll be an interesting experience.

Kudos to you both!

Thanks, Azizi!

I first wrote in who's leading which chantey, then erased it, as on second look it seemed a little superfluous, but forgot to erase Richard at the ending chantey. We'll be sharing leads, and it's pretty even on how many each are taking lead vocal. We're looking forward to it.

You lucky East Coast and Southern folks have two Menhaden fishermen groups to see and hear live, plus the Georgia Sea Island Singers. What great sources! We had the Georgia Sea Island Singers at our sea music fstival, in 2003, in SF, and they made a terrific impact on all, especially at the evening chantey sing, when they made their exit singing "Pay Me My Money Down," with over 200 participants singing along on the chorus.

Very nice selection for the topic, well done. Would ya do "Row, Michael, Row" real loud? I'd like to hear the way you guys do it but it's snowing mad here so I can't make a trip that far away.
Good luck, sounds great already

Barry

Pleased to hear you folks out in the Bay area are still kicking up a storm.

Will any of you be making your way East to the Mystic Sea Music festival this June?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi, Barry -

All the best for YOUR gig today, as well. Yes, we sing the rowing song "Row, Michael, Row" at chantey volume. It's also on our new CD. I got it from a Georgia Sea Islands recording, sung by a family of the last name Bligen, recorded by Guy and Candie Carawan in the 1950's, now available on a Rounder CD; also transcribed by them. It's a very interesting variant of the old slave song and ubiquitous 60's summer camp song, Michael, Row The Boat Ashore, with a very different melody, more dramatic in a way, and lends itself well to high volume...unless we're actually rowing :-).

Hi, Charley -

Speaking of kicking up a storm, a huge storm is expected today and tomorrow, with upt to 60 knot winds. Neither of us will be a Mystic this year, but hope to next year for the big 30th anniversary fest. Hope all's well your way.

Chanteyranger
