Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Don Firth Date: 21 Feb 08 - 04:21 PM Kids! You're all just kids! When I bought my first records, LPs and 45s hadn't come out yet. It was all 78s. When I was in my very early teens, I went regularly to Saturday matinee movies, usually with my sister (good way for mom to get us out of the house). The second feature of the double bill was often a western (maybe Hopalong Cassidy) or a crime drama (i.e., "film noir"), but frequently the main feature was one of the musical movies that were coming out of Hollywood at the time. Some of them were 90% fictional "Hollywoodized" bio-pics of some musician or composer. I got to liking some of the music that I heard in these movies, and after seeing "A Song to Remember" (1945 - Cornel Wilde as Chopin), I bought Jose Iturbi's recording of Chopin's Polonaise in Ab, which actually made the pop-charts shortly after the movie came out (Itubi did the piano playing in the movie while Cornel Wilde "finger-synced"). I think that was the first record I bought with my own money. I bought a lot of classical music, mostly stuff I had heard first in movies like the aforementioned, and opera recordings (weird kid, I suppose - but I also had an album of "Sons of the Pioneers"). But when I first got interested in folk music and bought my first guitar ($9.95 Regal), I went to Campus Music and Gallery in Seattle's University District and bought Walt Robertson's two 78s, and one 10" LP each by Burl Ives, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Susan Reed, and Cynthia Gooding. Some of the first songs I learned were from those records. Still got 'em. Don Firth |

Ex-jukebox, from the local newsagent, big hole in the middle, 10p Wow! Someone else who will admit to liking Sparks. I thought they were so cool when I was 15. "Kimono My House" by Sparks might well be my first bought record, although I also owned a couple of Steeleye Span albums (mad crush for Maddy), Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and the soundtrack from Rollerball (all Bach organ stuff) around that same time. My musical tastes were always pretty eclectic. |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: GUEST,DWR Date: 21 Feb 08 - 12:41 PM Yes, definitely a thread to bring back the Good Ol' Days. First 78 that I actually bought with my own money. Patsy Montana - Good Night Soldier/Smile And Drive Your Blues Away Decca 6101 (Blue Label). I bought it used for about 25 cents in maybe 1951. You can have your very own copy for about $24 with postage at ebay, I just looked it up. Most of my other 78 purchases were of Hank Snow, beginning with The Golden Rocket. First 45, having a bit of trouble remembering for sure, as there was a period in which I jumped back and forth between 78s and 45s, but I am fairly certain that it was The Louvin Brothers 45 set of Tragic Songs Of Life. First LP, no problem there, Hank Snow Just Keep A-Movin' RCA Victor LPM-1113 1955. First CD, that's easy too. Nanci Griffith, her first album on MCA, Lone Star State of Mind (1987). and yes I bought that at least a couple of months before I had a CD player. I had no faith that MCA would keep it in the catalog long enough to risk not getting it. Obviously, I was wrong. |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: EuGene Date: 21 Feb 08 - 11:52 AM Best I recall, my first 45 was "All American Boy" and my first LP was a Patti Page album . . . somewhere back there I bought an album of Woody Guthrie songs, but I believe that was after the Page record. My re-membery is getting rusty. |

Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: cetmst Date: 21 Feb 08 - 09:49 AM Can't recall the order but first was probably a Burl Ives 78; others were "Folk Songs and Ballads" by Susan Reed, "American Songbag" by Carl Sandburg, "Six Songs for Democracy", and some Josh White, Leadbelly and Richard Dyer-Bennet. First LP's were 10-inchers from the Folkways catalogue, Wade Hemsworth, Walt Robertson, Wallace House, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie. |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 21 Feb 08 - 09:45 AM First record I asked my folks for and got was Alvin and the Chipmonks' Christmas Song, about 57 or 58. Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Dave Roberts Date: 21 Feb 08 - 08:14 AM 'Pasadena' by The Temperance Seven, closely followed by 'Kon-Tiki' by The Shadows. Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Dave Sutherland Date: 21 Feb 08 - 08:09 AM If we ignore "Portrait of my Love"/"Strawberry Blonde" on 78 on the Woolworth's label then my first album was "Bob Dylan" in 1964. |

First LP was The Beatles 'White' album, which I still play occasionally. |

Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Mr Happy Date: 21 Feb 08 - 06:17 AM The first record I owned, given to me around 1962, along with an old wind up portable gramophone, was a 78 with a compilation ofsongs done by a group sounding much like the B&W minstrels. It had 'All the nice girls love a sailor', I do like to be beside the seaside', 'Hello, hello, who's you're lady friend?', Its a long way to Tipperary' |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Bryn Pugh Date: 21 Feb 08 - 06:03 AM First single - 'Sand Storm', Johnny and the Hurricanes First LP - 'Chet Atkins' Workshop'. I wish I still had it, if anly for 'Theme from a Summenr Place'. First Folky LP _ Peter Paul and Mary - can't remember the title, but it had 'A-Soalin' as one track. |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 21 Feb 08 - 05:51 AM I thought I was the only sad person who bought Jeepers Creepers by Hayley Mills but no..... MY excuse is that I was only about 14 and had a teenage crush. It was a 45 rpm single, and needless to say I didn't have a record player. However I did try it on my Mum's old 78 wind up gramophone (turned the speed down & put the brake on) with completely predictable results. But luckily I heard weird stuff on jukeboxes on RAF stations (I was a cadet you see). Then I started listening to Pick of the Pops with Alan Freeman - Brenda Lee, B Bumble & the Stingers, The Shads, Donegan, Joe Brown.... |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 21 Feb 08 - 05:25 AM First 45? 'Running Bear' by Johnnie Preston. First LP? 'The Buddy Holly Story'. Huge corridor cred to be seen carrying this album at school after the Man died. [ Didn't carry the vinyl, just the sleeve in case those lairy 5th formers 'just wanted a look']. Bought it on the drip from my sisters catalogue, 20 weeks at 1/9d. Great days! |
Subject: RE: What was the first record you bought? From: Fred McCormick Date: 21 Feb 08 - 05:23 AM Forget the lies and rumours to the effect that the first record I ever owned was a copy of The Happy Wanderer by some German childrens choir, or the claims that before my mid teens, there had been found in my possession records by Lonnie Donegan, Tommy Steele, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Cliff Richard, the Shadows and John Leyton. The first record I would ever admit to owning, even under the most excruciating torture devised by the hand of man, is Back Country Blues by Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Absolutely bleep bleepin' marvellous. |
