After preparing a humorous and what I considered to be witty post for the "Apostrophe Question" thread I hit 'ENTER' and away it went into Never Never Land, never to be seen again. I thought about proposing and will hereby do so, to the 'Cat to add a 'Save' function to this part of the site but in the interim or if they should not feel compelled to provide said function the next best thing is to use your 'Cut & Paste' function which is just a 'Right click' away. Select All, Cut and then enter your post. If it disappears, just bring up the box again and paste!
Just a note so you won't confuse anyone - Select All [CTRL-A], and then Copy [CTRL-C] the text to your clipboard - then submit. If you select "cut," you'll submit a blank message.

Uhhh, I forgot to mention, paste to document, then save there for retrieval. Makes a big difference!

Slag -

If you're using Windows, with most browsers and particularly with IE, hitting the back button as soon as you see that the post disappeared will take you back to the thread where usually your post will still be in the Reply box.

The complete thread, including your post is already saved for you in your Temporary Internet Files folder, and the browser Back button should bring it back up. If you "go other places first," so that the temp file is pushed out and a refresh is needed to reopen the thread, then of course your typing will not be there.

Since you likely always paste a copy of any incredibly witty post into Word for spell and grammar check, a copy should also be there in Word, and also in your clipboard from which you can just paste it back into the Reply box.

If this is happening frequently, make it a habit to click Ctl-A, Ctl-C immediately before hitting "Submit," just in case, and you'll have saved to clipboard in case the post doesn't work.

You can always take your mommy with you to the rock concert, in case you need someone to tie your shoelaces for you, but minimal practice in life-skills alleviates the need for help with every little annoyance that might crop up along life's way.

(Yes, of course, I've had a few vaporized posts, but not enough to require special tools to handle the disappointment.)

John

Entire posts have been known to disappear. in the last day or so, I'd swear that I typed in a paragraph or two hit the submit message button and....nothing...poof!....gone....very odd

*I* need to copy and paste my oft (3-4 times) posted advice.

If a post disappears, try hitting the 'back' button. This may bring the place you typed right back...(It does in MY browsers)...THEN copy the post, reload ..NOT refresh..Mudcat, and re-post it.

But I suspect that the problem always has something to do with either the cache of MUdcat's own database....that's why reloading ensures it doesn't happen again

I have tried pasting what I wrote to the screen, but then I can't see what's ON the screen. And it's hell scraping the pasted paper OFF the screen later. Now my monitor is all scratched up and--I guess you all don't want to hear this.

And another thing. I will no longer edit posts because the 'white out' causes the same problem.

I sometimes lose "vaporized" postings, but have never thought to blame Mudcat. I always figured it was me, or my computer, that was to blame.

And yes, the "Back" button works. It took me a while to figure that out, but now it's second nature for me. Works very much like / (or Edit/Undo) works when you inadvertently delete something in a post or an email or a Word document, etc.

If for some reason hitting the "submit message" button returns you to the forum page and you can see that your message didn't take, that's when the back button comes in handy to retrieve it. But from there, I find it doesn't work to try to submit it again. For some reason that browser screen/form isn't working. I open another browser window, navigate to that thread, and post it there and it goes. Tedious, but less troublesome that trying to remember what you wrote and retype it. It never comes out so well the second time.

It may be some aspect of the "preview" feature that voids the form.

I have lost so many posts to this gremlin that I hate to think of it. Yes, sometimes the "back" button works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Um... I been here for a while. So, I know... ya write it out... ya copy it... and then ya hit Submit. Standard procedure from the old days when the Café would close doors every time one of Max'x cats would scratch litter against the server in the basement.

The thing is, that every time you post something dumb the 'cat puts a little furball on your cookie. When the cookie gets fuzzy enough, your posts get balled up in the input pipe. Sometimes when you open the site, you're so fuzzy that you only get half-way in the door. It's harder, of course, to get your newest idea "on the table" when you're just shouting from the foyer.

As Bill D suggests, sometimes exiting and reopening the site will get you in far enough for things to work. If it's really bad, it might help to log out and then log back in to get a new shiny cookie that doesn't have all that fuzz on it.

Sometimes, when you post, you may also get interference from a "collision" with someone else's fuzzy cookie. The fur on the cookies gets tangled and only one (or sometimes neither one) gets through the pipe. The 'cat recently has handled fairly heavy traffic pretty well, but collisions do happen and apparently aren't always reported as such.

A post can also be lost by another server at your ISP or somewhere along the line as the message gets handed on toward the 'cat. This should be rare, but can happen; although it should be extremely rare without an error message.

John

Gee, JIK! I really appreciate your knowledgeable help and the snide cheap shot at the end!

I've "backed" up and checked the temp files. Gone, gone, gone! And, believe it or not, I don't have Word. Word Pad, but not Word. I've never got around to finding out why it wasn't included in the bundle. Too many other things going on.

I was just trying to offer a little help for others who have coasted to far in toward the mini-black hole and had their digits ripped off.

Thanks for the input all.

Tom

Every keyboard should have a key on it that executes the 'oh bugger, I didn't mean to do that' function. It would be a darn sight more useful than some of these other keys here... I mean, just what the hell does a PrtScn/SysRq do? It sure as heck doesn't print out my screen!

Liz - PrtScn is short for Parrot Scan. It is a legacy from the early days of computing before they invented computer viruses. At that time, the malicious attackers released large highly coloured birds into the warehouse sized rooms holding the wardrobe sized computer processing units. Shed feathers caused havoc by jamming the computer tape drives and sometimes the birds attacked the hamsters running round in the power backup wheels.
They tried to combat all this by including a button which, if pressed, will scan the room for parrots, and hopefully prevent you getting the Norwegian Blue Screen of Death.

I suspect that Little Hawk's problem with lost postings is probably due to Mudcat's computer incorrectly identifying him as a parrot.

Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

Eckshully, printscreen will capture your screen as a jpg file that can be pasted into other applications.

I was having some really weird problems, yesterday and the day before. Posting something would take me to a blank screen with "google" at the top; an error message telling me to report it to Max; a server error; and, quite often when I tried to post, it wouldn't. I'd go back to post again and it wouldn't register my mouse, so I'd refresh the whole page and voila, it would work. As it wasn't just on Mudcat I figured it had something to do with a firewall or browser. I had to constantly hit refresh as no pages were loading up right. They'd say "DONE" and be blank.

I wrote to Max who thought it might be a problem with my RAM, but I am on the new, refurbished Dell just bought and not loaded up. Free and clear according to spybot, avg, adaware and, even Norton. Since nobody said anything in the Firefox thread, I decided to close down Kerio, fire up Norton and see what happens. So far, so good, so it must be something to do with Kerio, even though I haven't changed anything. Either that or it was the mouse tool I downloaded after BillD told us about it!**bg** (That thing's got a hair-trigger on it!)
