The music on Raidió na Gaeltachta (or possibly Raidió na Lífe or one of the other Irish-language voluntary stations, which are often available online - for instance Raidió na Lífe is on TuneIn Radio - often includes country music. Probably what GUEST jay heard was one of the bands from the west coast; maybe John Beag.

As with the English, the Irish frankly don't have a clue how to play pedal steel which is vital for a proper country sound, so best avoided!!!

Very much so, I perform 60% Irish trad and around 30% old time country, not surprising as manyof the old country songs had a large dose of Irish influence in them. I'm another Johnny McEvoy fan. He probably wouldhave had more fame abrosad, and remember in the early 70's he had his own show on BBC, but due to depression he pretty much became a recluse for 20 odd year. But he's been back better than ever since the early 90's

I know Philomena Begley did it and called it England's Motorways/Little Son.

It's a Ewan MacColl song I think properly titled Britain's Motorways and there are more verses than she sang.

Out of interest - which Irish lady country singer had a hit with Peggy seeger's song about a mother talking to her little girl, because dad was away from home building and repairing the motorways?

The song never made much sense to me in Peggy's cod Appalachian, but it came sharply into focus once i heard it with an Irish accent.

I happen to enjoy listening to Philomena Begley and Susan McCann. They remind me of what I liked about country music forty years ago and why I still prefer the music of that era.

I'd never heard of Johnny McEvoy before, but I pulled up the YouTube clip in Villan's post and was very impressed. He's got a gorgeous voice - reminds me of Liam Clancy. And if he wrote that song it's a great one.

I have no particular objection to Irish country music, or at least to the style of singing and the instruments used, but why do so many of the singers, mostly people who haven't lived in the USA, sing IRISH songs in some sort of dreadful pseudo-Appalachian accent? And, why the hell don't they learn how to pronounce Tyrone properly.

Well this is it Declan. A lot of the guys from the showband scene came over England and played the country music clubs when the showband thing fell apart - they said it was the disco thing that killed it off.

Most of them were brilliant musicians. Very worthy of anybody's respect. i don't know where they are now. Thatcher closed the coalmines, and with them went the miners welfares which employed most of the country and western bands. Some of them when the great Irish theme bar became news about 10-12 years ago.

Of course we get the Country and Irish stars like Daniel O'Donnel, Charlie Lansboro, and Dominic Kirwan touring our theatres - and we get bands who are obviously trying for that market, but not quite making it, in the big Irish clubs like Greyfriars in Nottingham.

Personally I think this is what gives Irish folk music such vigour. Its still music that can fill the floor with waltzing couples, and people not doing necessarily folk dances to folksongs. You don't get that with English folkmusic!

I really enjoy Country music which is definately not the norm for people my age, but any weekend I'd rather go hear and jive to Declan Nerney, Mick Flavin, Mike Denver and many others on the scene than go to an over packed night club.

I am Irish and a fan of Country music. But I am not particularly fond of what passes for Country and Irish around here. There are no doubt some great musicians playing in "Country" bands here. But a lot of the material they produce is not my cup of tea. WLD is obviously correct that there is a big connection between a lot of the folk music of these islands and country music.

A number of well known traditional musicians have earned their living playing in Country and Irish style showbands over the years. The most obvious example that springs to mind is Arty McGlynn aho played guitar with Brian Coll and the Buckaroos before making a name for himself as a backer of traditional music.

It would have been difficult to make a living as a trad musician in this country, but some of the showband players were able to make reaonable money, albeit at the price of a punishing schedule of travelling from gig to gig.

It would be lovely to know which moron first came up the idea that you have bigger balls as a folk music fan if you reject some other kind of music.

The relationships between different kinds of folk music is so obvious, to even a person of average intellligence. But it really does defeat these wooden eared zealots.

The relattionship between The Unfortuanate Rake and the Streets of Laredo and Gold in the Mountains and St James Infirmary is well documented.

The cross fertilisation between Whisky in the Jar, The Irish Rebel Ballads, The larrikins of the Australian Bush ballads, Jesse James and there ain't no good chain gang, and I fought the law leaves the average person with deja vu.

That jerky guitar rhythm in Carthy's Famous Flower of Serving Men and Peggy and Mike Seegers Clinch Mountain Backstep, and presumably The Stanley Bros. How could anyone except the tone deaf miss it?

Yeh you're right Irish Country Music - many mudcatters have swapped their listening ears for a mess of pottage - namely the companionship of a lot dull snobs. people who can't value a guy like Johnny MacEvoy - someone who can switch from Shores of Amerikay to Hickory Wind effortlessly and with the grace of the truly talented.

Some of the nicest country music I ever heard was on an Irish language radio staion sang in the Irish language . I didn't get the name of the band .

I like Johnny MacEvoy's work. Can't understand why he isn't a huge huge star.

I used to live in Brum in the 1970's and there were a lot of great Irish musicians working the country circuit in England in those days. I suppose the showband thing had finished over in Ireland, and we were the next port of call - so to speak.
