We've bought our plane tickets and booked a room in Manhattan, so unless Her Majesty decides otherwise, we will be spending a few days in New York. Any suggestions for musical events? God knows there's no lack of music in New York, but I don't see much in the guidebooks that could be described as folk music.

Best bet is to buy Time Out New York (available all over, probably even at the airport). It has a country/folk/blues listing for every day of the week. Also, definitely see what is happening at Joe's Pub (its a bit of a misnomer by the way, don't be expecting an actual pub!), but is one of the primary venues for folk/celtic/world music these days with the demise of some older venues. It does have a website I believe. In May you might luck out because that will be the start of some shows in various parks around the city, or places like the South Street Seaport. Hope this helps.

I just checked the site for the NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club. Here's a link to their venues page, (with lots of other links) followed by 2 events in May for the dates you'll be here.

You might want to check these venues (and reactivate your Mudcat thread) again when the dates get closer, because some events only get listed a few weeks in advance.

If you have any interest in Irish music sessions, there are several weekly ones in the area, as well as a monthly traditional Irish singers' circle scheduled to meet on Monday May 5. (If you like to sing traditional songs, but don't have any Irish ones, it's still fine to come and sing some other type of folk song.) If you want this specific info, post a note on this thread and I'll be happy to add it.

CET, if you do end up going to the sea music concert (I'd recommend it) go early so you can take in the sights of the seaport before hand. Sometime afterwards they end up sing in some sort of drinking place & you'd want to catch that too. Good luck & have a blast. If you want to chase down any Celtic/Irish sessions ask Dan Milner (he's part of the New York Packet), he'd be very up to snuff about such things.

I would love to catch the sea music concert, but I don't think we are arriving in NYC early enough.

The Irish session on 5 May sounds interesting.

Looks like there's a lot happening that the Unofficial Guide to New York doesn't know about.

Cheers

Edmund

Here's the Irish music info:

NY Irish Singers Circle
Meets first Monday of every month (so, May 5)
Paddy Reilly's Pub
519 Second Avenue at E. 29th Street in Manhattan
6:30 Irish time. (Some people will be there chatting and having a drink in the 6:30-6:45 range, but singing usually doesn't start until 6:45-7:00. Sometimes runs later than 9:00.) This one is all singing, no instruments.

If you prefer tune sessions, you could try these two. Both are open to all musicians and both places serve food:

Session at The Landmark Tavern (May 5)
626 11th Avenue at W. 46th Street, Manhattan
Mondays from 8 to 11 pm

Check link for guest musician list:
Landmark Tavern session

Session at Dempsey's, Every Tuesday Night (May 6)
61 Second Avenue between E. 3 St and E. 4th St.
Manhattan
8 P.M. usually to at least 11 P.M., often later
