Thoughts and prayers are with you. My Mom's mind went those last few years, but she never tired of listening to me sing, and she never forgot how to say, "I love you." I have always been grateful for that.

We are arranging a memorial service near home for the end of March. That gives us time to get family there from all over and say our goodbyes all at once. Seems like yesterday we were saying our goodbye to her mother's generation.

It is hard to understand why a lot of things happen the way that they do. And those "things" are usually as hard to deal with as they are to understand.

My mother's name was Helen, too. She and my dad have been gone for almost 6 years now...but still are alive in my memories. Recently
my mother-in-law passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
It is good to know that the suffering is over. It is such a difficult
situation to have to contend with. Blessings on you and your family.

Thanks all for your thoughts and prayers. Ruth was ready to go and her death a few days ago was a blessing. Now we are free to picture her in all her various stages of life, not just those last hard days.

Tough news, Jed. I'm sure your Mom is at peace now after all those years suffering from dementia.

My mother went though something very similar before she passed back in August of '06. I'm glad that we spent a few of her final months living with her up in New Jersey; it would never have happened except for our being displaced by Katrina, but it was sort of a blessing in disguise to be able to share that time with her.

When I said I wasn't good at verbal expression, I didn't mean I was usually this bad:
"Jed,
... I do empathize with your having to part with you in the passing of your mom. ... "

I meant to say I empathize with you in your mom's passing.

And, as my sister told us when she finally succumbed to cancer after a 12+ year battle, "I can see beyond the curtain. It's so beautiful. I am not leaving you. ... I'm flying."   

I do believe those we love are never really lost to us, though that doesn't mean we won't or shouldn't grieve their physical loss. Ron and others have said it well.

My condolences, Jed. Having recently lost my sister after ten years of adjusting to the loss of my parents, I can understand how the loss of a close loved one can hurt deeply. Although it can sound trite at times like this because so many people offer this observation, in our hearts we know that passage from this life means an end to all the infirmities of body and spirit that plague mortals. Reflecting on and believing in that can help as you adjust to your mother's passing.

I'm so sorry to read this, Jed.

Your Mom will still be with you. Every time you think "I have to call Mom to tell her some new thing the kids are doing" she will be there--because the values she gave you are what you wanted to share with her in that call. And you'll be surprised how often you think of a conversation you'd like to have with her. When the pain of loss passes, you'll find this is a good thing.
