Subject: Obit: Ruth Marum - Jed's Mom
From: Big Mick
Date: 21 Feb 08 - 08:03 PM

I got a call from my baby Beef Brother, Jed. He told me his Mom passed away today, February 21, 2008, in Worcester, Massachussets.

It is said one can tell much about a person by observing their children. Using this measure, and listening to the amazing lyrics Jed writes, Ruth Marum must have been an extraordinary person for she raised a man with an amazing heart. Jed Marum is an empath of amazing ability. Listen to his songs, crafted after he read letters of folks from other era's, and marvel at how he was able to hook into that person's life and bring it into relevance, and make them live again. Prayer From Little Round Top, Mama's Lilly, Con Este Beso, Banks of the Mobile, and the one that is most relevant today ...... The Locket.

I remember when I first heard "The Locket". I had come to Toronto to lend a vocal to Jed's CD "Soul of a Wanderer". Paul Mills and I were in the control room when Jed recorded this song. He wrote it to honor his Mom who was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Jed and Louisa had attempted to keep Jed's Mom and Dad together by bringing them to Texas and taking care of them in their home. Eventually the task, with the medical care needed, was just too much. Jed describes how he felt about the moments he got to share in this amazing song. It is, at once, a wonderful tribute to a marvelous woman, while also teaching us that it isn't important that they can no longer always remember us, what is important is that we remember for them and pass it on. It is important that we remember the good times, and the debt of love that we owe. It is important to remember that in their caring for us, they taught us that one day we would need to care for them. You can hear this amazing testament to Jed's Mom from her loving son by going to this myspace page and scrolling down through the songs to The Locket.

Ruth, rest well knowing that you did a wonderful job on that boy of yours. He will miss you, and he will keep you alive in the singing of your song. Good job, lady, and thanks for raising him to be such a good friend. I am in your debt.

All the best,

Mick

I'm so sorry to read this, Jed.

Your Mom will still be with you. Every time you think "I have to call Mom to tell her some new thing the kids are doing" she will be there--because the values she gave you are what you wanted to share with her in that call. And you'll be surprised how often you think of a conversation you'd like to have with her. When the pain of loss passes, you'll find this is a good thing.

Maggie (Stilly River Sage)

Jed,
Having recently said goodbye to my 91-year-old dad's earthly form and knowing that he was in a better place now, yet still missing him deeply, I do empathize with your having to part with you in the passing of your mom.

I would say more, but I'm lousy at expressing deep and complex feelings verbally.   So I'll just say my condolences are with you and your family.

Sorry for your loss Jed and you know you have all my best thoughts.......and I pass on my Dad's wise and true words to you. She'll always be there, just a thought away.

My condolences, Jed. Having recently lost my sister after ten years of adjusting to the loss of my parents, I can understand how the loss of a close loved one can hurt deeply. Although it can sound trite at times like this because so many people offer this observation, in our hearts we know that passage from this life means an end to all the infirmities of body and spirit that plague mortals. Reflecting on and believing in that can help as you adjust to your mother's passing.

With prayers for you and your family,
SC (Wayne)

My condolences and may I echo what Spaw and Wesley said? We never really are without them even when they are gone. It may sound trite and dismissive, right now, but she is there and will *hear* your innermost, heartfelt thoughts of her and know, once again, what a wonderful job she did in raising you, her son.

RIP, Ruth,

Kat & Rog

When I said I wasn't good at verbal expression, I didn't mean I was usually this bad:
"Jed,
... I do empathize with your having to part with you in the passing of your mom. ... "

I meant to say I empathize with you in your mom's passing.

And, as my sister told us when she finally succumbed to cancer after a 12+ year battle, "I can see beyond the curtain. It's so beautiful. I am not leaving you. ... I'm flying."

I do believe those we love are never really lost to us, though that doesn't mean we won't or shouldn't grieve their physical loss. Ron and others have said it well.

Tough news, Jed. I'm sure your Mom is at peace now after all those years suffering from dementia.

My mother went though something very similar before she passed back in August of '06. I'm glad that we spent a few of her final months living with her up in New Jersey; it would never have happened except for our being displaced by Katrina, but it was sort of a blessing in disguise to be able to share that time with her.

God bless,
Tom

It is hard to understand why a lot of things happen the way that they do. And those "things" are usually as hard to deal with as they are to understand.

Our blessing is that no matter how hard they are to deal with, and no matter how hard they are to understand, all things eventually pass. All the best to you and your family.

Thanks again y'all. I appreciate your kind thoughts.

We are arranging a memorial service near home for the end of March. That gives us time to get family there from all over and say our goodbyes all at once. Seems like yesterday we were saying our goodbye to her mother's generation.
