Thanks for the info on the bio, Fred- another one to look out for. I see there's also a DVD available with performances at Pizza Express and 100 Club. I think all the times I saw him were at 100 Club, my usual haunt late 60s-early 70s.

Colyer's autobiography is called When Dreams Are in The Dust. The Ken Colyer Trust have also recently published a biography - Goin'Home: The Uncompromising Life and Music of Ken Colyer by Mike Pointon, Ray Smith, Ken Colyer Trust, and Martin Colyer.

Both are advertised on Amazon, but for some strange reason, Amazon don't actually seem to stock them. However, if you go to http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0956294014/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1297443569&sr=1-1&condition=new , you will find a seller there called Tony Leppard. He is acting for the KC trust, and will be happy to despatch either or both books as you require.

Update on Ken's biography. He wrote it in 1984 and couldn't find a publisher that would accept his typically uncompromising conditions. The first limited edition 1989 fetched silly prices but The Ken Colyer Trust reissued it in 2009 for £11.99.I got this new at cover price via Abe books but try Amazon. Lots of additional photographs.

maybe the fact it is unedited is what makes it interesting ?

I think that is part of what makes it interesting. I've just finished reading the five chapters on The KC Trust website and for me it makes absolutely fascinating reading. I posted earlier that I recieved
The Vipers 3 CD set 10,000 years ago as a gift which was what got me into skiffle (being way too young to remember it first hand) and I've gone on to explore further, the genre.

As I said it is an interesting read but I think it suffers somewhat by not being edited ,apparently at Colyer's instructions. But then on second thoughts maybe the fact it is unedited is what makes it interesting ?

My digirecorder is set for next Tuesday Radio 2, 22.30 hrs. Unlike the ancient and venerable Thimbles I am far too young to remember this stuff first hand, but.....I love it!!

a couple of years ago, my Dad gave me, for a birthday gift, The Vipers 3 CD set 10,000 years ago...and that's how I got into skiffle. I'll definitely be tuning in for this little gem

Radio Times online has changed its mind (partially) since my last post and has zapped Mr Dylan in some versions of its pages (though not this one) for the 2230 slot next Tuesday. Nice to see that R2 knows what it's doing . . .

...no-one spotted Roger's deliberate (ahem!) mistake? Although both drumming Bowdens played with Ken (and Chris B) it is Colin, not Ron on the programme according to the RT.

I used to sit in with Diz Disley at his All Night Jam Sessions in the Colyer Club in Gt Newport Street in the mid sixties - back when I was a Jazz Clarinet and sax player , and hadnt quite discovered Folk

Saw the Ken Colyer Band at a club in Birmingham (just off the Hagley Road - name had something to do with a waterworks, I think, although I had a few beers that night) many years ago, perhaps '73 or '74. Brilliant musicianship, and a wonderful evening. Real jazz played by real jazzers. Fantastic.

Hey ho, wonder where all the years went...........?? :-)

According to RT online listings, it's His Bobness's Theme Time on R2 at that time on R2 (or it would show that if the page didn't. irritatingly snap back to the default making you have to arse about looking for the 4 March page in the schedule).

No sign of Mr Colyer (or is it Collyer? Google is in two equally divided minds on this).

Of rather more contemporary musical relevance, at the end of this morning's Today on R4 (it's not up on the site yet) there was a piece on the remarkable revival of the Denby Dale Brass Band by its one surviving member of the 1947 lineup.

Great. I hadn't clocked that one, probably because I haven't got the new Radio Times yet. Ken Colyer? Bleep bleepin' magic.

Programme on "forgotten" (? not by me, or other Jazz & skiffle fans of a certain age!) Ken Colyer on BBC Radio 2 next Tuesday March 4th at 22.30 to 23.30. Features Martin Carthy, Chaz McDevitt, Peter Donegan, Ron Bowden, Digby Fairweather, Chris Barber and someone called Richard Hawley doing a skiffle duo with Billy Bragg (don't fight over the washboard, chaps!).
