DOWN BY THE DOCKYARD WALL
Words & Music by Shep Woolley
(As recorded by Tom Lewis on "360° All Points of the Compass")

1. Just a boy of 17, he started out to roam,
To sail across the seven seas so far away from home.
She said that she would wait for him 'til he returned again.
As the anchor chain came up and down, he heard this soft refrain:

CHORUS: Down by the dockyard wall I will wait for you,
As you come across that walk-ashore in your suit of blue.
My love for you will never change; my heart is always true.
Down by the dockyard wall I will wait for you,

2. Around the world he traveled, beneath the ensign high.
He saw the dainty flying fish, the starless arctic sky;
But in his heart he's pining for his love so far away.
As the bow wave split the cool night air, he heard the lee wind say: CHORUS

3. Home again and the good times came; her arms were open wide.
He held her safely close to him; she walked by his side;
But dark clouds soon filled up the sky, and war it threatened on,
'Til once again a sad farewell; a young girl stands alone, singin'--CHORUS

4. That's a long, long time ago; now there's a picture in a frame,
And tears shed every Christmas, for the memories remain;
But if the young man in the photograph could hear what she's to say,
He'd likely join the chorus for she sings it every day. CHORUS

Shep Woolley -- not to be confused with Sheb Wooley.

I don't look good naked anymore

I stepped outta the shower and I got a good look at myself
Pot belly, bald head, man, I thought I was somebody else
I caught my reflection in the mirror on the back of my bathroom door
I just don't look good naked anymore

So, I'm goin' upstairs and turn the bedroom mirror to the wall
I hung it there when I was trim and tall
I'd stand there and smile, and strut and flex until my arms got sore
But I just don't look good naked anymore

Well, I used to go out with the girls
I loved them one and all
Now they don't get very close to me
They're afraid that I might fall

Well, I went to the Doctor for my annual medical exam
Stood there in the buff, suddenly he said "MAN"
I said "What is it Doc, some fatal disease, I just gotta know the score"
He said "No, you just don't look good naked anymore

Well, me and my wife had a dance routine
Everybody said it was unique
Now it's only when we're back to back
That we're dancing cheek to cheek

Well, I went to a nudie beach to have some seaside fun
Stretched out in my birthday suit, soakin' up the sun
Somebody yelled, "Hey, there's an old white whale washed up on the shore
I just don't look good naked anymore

Yeah, my arches fell, my chest went to hell and my butt's a-draggin' the floor
An' I just don't look good naked anymore

"Not to be confused with Sheb Woolley"...

According to Shep's biog on his web site, he was initially known as Sheb before the navy thought that Shep was more a appropriate nickname given his ovine surname.

Just a minor correction to the words:-
Second line of chorus should be
As you come acress that Walker Shore in your suit of blue

I understand that the Walker Shore was the gang-plank.

Colyn.

Dear Sir , as an ex-matelot, I have been priviliged to fall over, sorry, I mean partake in light refreshments at the Petty Officers Mess on several Shep Woolley nights, as a POGI, he was one of the most hated people on board..'Stand still that man!!'- during drill instruction... but as an ex-POGI entertaining , it was impossible to stand still due to the high merriment factor..
Anyway, the 'walk ashore' is generally taken to mean leaving the Navy for the last time... becoming a civilian
'going ashore' is leaving the boat or shore establishment for other dutiful or recreational reasons, but returning.
I 'walked ashore' at Portsmouth Dockyard way back in the mid-eighties, but continue my connection by singing songs by Cyril Tawney ex 'Tiff', like me)and Shep... pus odd sea shanties (not allowed in R.N.)
Last night at the 'Srag End' folk club in Leicestershire , Phil Lunn played/sang this very song, we all joined in the chorus with gusto.

For the record, I did NOT write "not to be confused with Sheb Woolley". I wrote "not to be confused with Sheb Wooley." There is a subtle difference if you read carefully.

Shep Woolley and Sheb Wooley are/were two different people.

One is (or was) American and the other is (or was) British.

One is living and the other is dead.

One wrote DOWN BY THE DOCKYARD WALL (and other songs) and the other wrote I JUST DON'T LOOK GOOD NAKED ANYMORE (and other songs).

They are/were both funny.

I will leave it to you to figure out (and remember) which is which.

My links should be helpful.
