I have been looking for fingerstyle TAB/Music to Pat Sky's song, "Separation Blues", for a long time. I found the words here, but the music is only a single note melody line.

Does anybody have a full fingerstyle arrangement, like the way Pat played it?

Thanx ER

I've been playing this song for almost 30 years, and I never knew who wrote it. I'd heard someone sing it in 1970, and it sunk into my brain forever. I only knew the first verse and the John the Baptist verse - never realized there were any more. Thank you!!

I don't know if I play Pat Sky's arrangement as I've never heard him do it, but it is a fingersyle arrangement. I wish I knew some way to show you how I play it...I've never written any tablature.

Mark:

I'm glad I could help. Did you find all the words on this Web site's lyrics database? You can hear Patrick Sky play and sing the song, on his great first album, ""Patrick Sky"", from Vanguard, which is available, on CD, from Amazon.com. Check it out. There is another great song, ""Many a Mile"", on that album, that I would love to learn to play. Unfortunately I can not pick things up by ear; I need the written TAB/Music.

Too bad you can't write TAB or Music. Listen to the record and see if your version is like the original. I saw him sing it once or twice, back in the late sixties/early seventies sometime.

A friend of mine has played this song for years. We've played together for many years. He has a nice finger picking style. Someone approached me the other day at a local street fair. He was watching me perform (busking) and he volunteered this site:

click-me

I don't know if it has that particular song there. I've been trying to search there and there are many links. Hope you find it. Reggie

Woody:

I got it, six pages. Thanx loads. I've been looking for this music for a long time. Too bad Pat's complete fingerstyle arrangements to the songs are not transcribed, only the intro and then the melody line, but it's a good start.

I see you transposed "Separation Blues" to a new key. Is it easier to play that way? Sometimes I think that, if the pitch of the record is off or the guitarist is using a capo, the transcriber will put the song in a different key from the one in which it was originally played, making it that much harder for us to learn. If we only knew what chord shapes Pat played it in!

I see you've been reading my postings on various sites. Thanks for the "St Louis Tickle" too. This is the version that I play, from "Finger-Picking Styles for Guitar", by Happy Traum, Oak Publications, 1967. That is a great book. I'm now working on "Living in the Country", from that book.

I'm curious to know what other Pat Sky songs are in his songbook. Could you post a list of titles?

Thanx again, Alex M

Great thread.....I've been a Pat Sky fan since the mid sixties. He wrote some really great stuff and had a unique, free, and wonderful style on guitar and banjo. I've been singing his stuff for years and some of his individual lines are real classics: "Reality is bad enough, why should I tell the truth?"

We need a little Pat Sky Fan Club here to exchange info.

Annap,

OLGA's main site is closed. However, if you CLICK HERE you will get the olga.net home page. On the left is a link entitled "Search Engine". If you go there, you are welcome to search to your heart's content. If you get a "hit" for your search there will be a list of States (California, Florida, etc.) and countries (Poland, Germany, etc.) that have "mirror sites" of OLGA. If you click on them, it takes you to the tablature you have found. By the way, those "foreign" sites are English language capable.

Don't ask me to explain the legalisms here ('cause I don't understand). Suffice it to say OLGA is alive, just not well. But, like Alice's Restaurant you can nearly "get anything you want" (you just can't sit at the table, you have to "take out").

I tend to agree EZ, but there are a few others I find equally compelling. "Many Times Before" which I posted the other day is not well known, but very beautiful. I think I'll repost "Love Will Endure" which is kinda' fragmented on another thread. "Nectar of God" also needs to be put up here.

Outside of his songwriting, Pat was also a performer of traditional songs as well, often with very unique takes. On one album, there's even a frailed banjo version of the Gilbert and Sullivan "Modern Major General." His "Rattlesnake Mountain" and "Payday" are both personalized versions of trad songs. Somewhere too I remember Rick Fielding saying that he saw him do "Modern Major General" live and found it funny.

His association with Peter LaFarge, Buffy Ste. Marie. and especially Mississippi John Hurt, plus his own roots, made for an interesting combination. I find no one else quite like him.

In regards to all the inquiries about Pat Sky: I saw him several times in the 1960s in Baltimore at a small folk music club called The Foghorn and even got to speak to him about how he gets that twangy sound. He showed me his fingernails and said that's what he picks with. Of course, that vintage blonde J-200 helped a bit too, as it had an amazing tone! I have no tabs for Separation Blues but I saw him do it may times and he did it in C. Did anyone else see him in the 60s? He used to do many funny songs that were never on any albums, like one that he said was in a W.C. Fields movie, and it was about some girl that lost her tambourine. The song is in the movie That Fatal Glass of Beer. He also did some really funny song about getting drunk, and it had this incredible little guitar lick in between each verse, but I can't remember much more about it. Check out his incredible guitar break in Dylan's Don't Think Twice on the Through a Window album and Candy Man on the Two Steps Forward One Step Back album. Pat Sky is an incredible guitarist!!! If anyone wants to talk Pat Sky to me just email at jberle@mtamaryland.com and I would love to write more.

Good to see Pat Sky coming up again and again. He was a favorite of mine in the 60's. In 1969 I chose and evening of Pat Sky and Joni Mitchell for $2.00 over Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie across town for $6.00. The town was Syracuse, NY. I have never regretted the choice.

For the key of G I Liked them Chnords Amos but for that Cm chnord. Instead I like the rather pedestrian A 7th chnord. But that could because of the way I hear the melody.

And there is a bridge

(C)If your baby kicks you out a bed and she won't treat you ni(G)ce.

(C)And you feel mistreated well then bud(D7)dy take my advise. (D)

These are the chnords I play.

Guldhamstern,

That Two Steps Froward album is available on Amazon, but you're right, it isn't cheap. Both copies available are about $30. Check ebay periodically too, as it shows up there once in a while. I was fortunate once to get a sealed copy of it there and it wasn't all that much becuase it isn't that well known so nobody bid on it. Many of his funniest songs never made it on record. I was fotunate to see him several times up close in the 60s. - Jon

In place of Amos's Cm or Don's A7, I play a G dim (XX2323) and slide it up to (XX5656). I'm not sure what Patrick uses since I misplaced that album in the early '70s.

I also play the bridge a little different than Don:

(C)If you kick your baby out of bed 'cause she won't treat you ni(G)ce.

(C)If you feel mistreated well bud(A7)dy take my advise.(D7)

If you want a note for note version of Patrick's playing, I can't help you, but my version is a pretty close approximation of what he did on his first album. I'll try to find time to tab it out if you're interested.
