Losing an arm and decorated for heroism in the Russo-Japanese war, Joseph Trumpeldor became the first Jewish officer in the tsarist armies. The leader of Jewish Legion at Gallipoli, he then became defence corps leader in the Galilee. Trumpeldor was killed 2/29/1920at age 40 in battle at Tel Chai.

        B'chol makom, uv'chol rega, tizk'ru oti,
        Ki nilchamti, v'gam nafalti, b'ad molad'ti!
        Kol hayom ani charashti, uvalayla,
        K'ney rovi b'yadi achazti ad harega ha-achron.

Every place and every hour, remember me, remember me,
For I battled and I fell for my Galilee.
I plowed the land,I watched my land,
And fell with the rifle in my hand.

Trumpeldor's deathbed words were dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, but in Hebrew. He wasn't, however, one for taking advice. As the nephew of one of those killed in Tel-Hai told us, had he listened to some present, the sad events of the day might have been avoided. Nevertheless, a hero and very important figure.
He was able to live outside the Pale of Settlement, because his father had been an officer. He lived in the south and was a strong influence on Jewish youth in Rostov. As a result, many immigrated, bringing with them many folksongs, as well as trying to emulate Cossack culture.
