I'd love to come Skarpi, the shared house idea seems good, keeps the cost down too. I always wanted to go to Iceland, and would make it a holiday as well.

I'd like to come, Skarpi, and see you and Iceland again.

When I was 11, my mum won a competition and I went to Iceland for 4 days. Major memories are; choice of anything in a toyshop, visiting a village inside the arctic circle, swimming in baths fed by natural warm springs, and being sick in the taxi on the way to the airport in London!!

Mind you, it was 1959, so things might have changed a bit!!!!

Andy and ernest its gonna be held in 2010 so you have plenty of time to see if can or cant come , now what I have to do is to find a school house
somewhere witch they dont use anymore or another place , I have one, and its on a great historyian place , but we´ll see

1959 !! welcome to the future .

sailing to Iceland by Norræna shipline it should be from 30 to 40 hours
depence where you are going to sail from .
at least 30 hours from Danmark .

all the best Skarpi

Thanks, skarpi. Between the Norraena shipline and a rowing boat I was thinking more in terms of a bicycle-powered cabin cruiser - complete with driver, of course :-) Any offers?

However, I guess we'll put together a flying squad in time ...

To my addled brain, the air fare to Rekyavik from London is ridiculously cheap - it might be worth considering that if you plan on coming from the US - stop-overs can be catered for, even Micca may have cleared enough space before then.

Yes, yes, we have summer here in the sunny south of the US for months at a time, consequently I'm spoiled by warm sunshine and chilly winds are not my thing.

but I'd love to come to your country, chilly winds or no.

Its a place I've never been to.
What would be the sort of cost of transport and accommodation etc.
I would certainly prefer the second weekend in May 2010, ie Fri 7 to Mon 10.

Skarpi, my Icelandic is very poor and I did the best I could. No, not off the Internet. Perhaps in the future I'll use the Internet.

I promised to be good and not go off a-viking. My ancestors did that and it caused all sorts of troubles. My grandfather wanted to restart that old family tradition, but a rowboat on the Mississippi isn't quite the same thing as a longship in the North Atlantic.

That sounds really good. It'll be for me in the middle of the term so I just hope I can take at least Friday off. I'd love to come even if it's only for a weekend.
I've been in Iceland once and that was a great vacation.

Susanne, there's (well, there was ages ago) a ferry that stops on the Faroes for two days on the way to Iceland. That was the greatest vacation I ever had (one week in the Faroes and two weeks in Shetland).

I'm still looking for the lyrics to "Farewell to the Faroes" BTW.

2011 would even be easier for me, for then I'll be on permanent vacation.

here If you want the proof you'll have to scroll down to where they've spelled the name of our fair City wrongly - it should read Kingston upon Hull. Any chance that we could get this organised as a cultural exchange? Hang on - I forgot - we haven't got a culture. Damn.

Les, can't be true - Britain has cities of culture, even though Hull has not been among them so far. Time to apply!

Anyway, it took the Americans 200 years to develop a culture, so you should be able to do it in two!

Seriously, I think the exchange idea might be worth exploring! Unfortunately, Kiel is twinned with half the world, but not Reykjavik.

year s and also many trawlers from Hull stayed in Reykjavík .

There is a Memorial plate in Hull of all those seamen who lost
their live here and also In Reykjavík .

There has always been connection between Reykjavík and Hull

A red-letter day.

Yesterday my wife gave her principal formal notice that she would not return next year, at least as a regular scheduled classroom teacher. Which will free us up for travel, a great part of the year. No more fighting the crowds on school vacations.

She came home and told me this as I was reading the Mudcat.

I asked, "Do you want to go to Iceland in 2010?" She blinked once and said, yes.

Incidentally, Iceland is one of only 4 foreign countries I've ever been in, in my 66+ years. The others were England, Scotland and Canada. And I didn't get to any of them except Canada 'till I was nearly 60.

Unfortunately, both times I was in Iceland consisted of waiting in the airline terminal for a couple of hours for a plane change. Maybe I can do better.

Peter.

well here are some info about places to stay , and car rentals
and bus station´s and places to visit.

here is a place witch is cheaper but I need to find out if its runnin in may , I think if this is runnin witch I find out today you could all stay there , its kind a selfgathering place . http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hl%C3%AD%C3%B0ardalssk%C3%B3li

http://www.hotel-hlid.is/ this is near by my town

http://www.south.is/ this shows more of South Iceland .
https://www.hertz.is/
http://www.budget.is/
http://www.re.is/Flybus//

some pubs in Reykjavík ;http://www.dubliner.is/
http://www.celticcross.is/
and we one there called the Highlander . and many more ofcourse .

Now the plan is that on Friday we would visit pub in Reykjavík or stay and rest play a little :O) , On Saturday we would go early rise and travel around South of Iceland sight seen volcanos , uplive earthquakes and more , dinner at my house and musical time in a pub
in my hometown or near by , still in progress , Icelandic
music as well with us , I am planning to get some friends to
do some things with us we would use a sound system .

please let me know before 15th of february so I can
plan the rest . Someone asked me about a volcano named Laki
and how to get there , well its about 250 km away from me

Step 2: Check flights - doing that now but it's very confusing.

Skarpi, I'm terribly sorry but I cannot join you. Due to difficulties at the office I can't get enough time off to come over. I'd like to see Iceland, and will probably come asking for help again in five years' time ... Meanwhile, whoever is going, enjoy yourselves and this great island!

I've been checking the Iceland Air flights and it is not looking good

London Heathrow has afternoon flights both ways but availability on the Friday and Sunday is shown as 5 seats and only 1 on Monday.

There is a morning flight on Monday at 07.40, but with the required check in time in these security conscious days plus travelling time to the airport, it would mean a very early start

Manchester flights to Reykjavik are OK but there is only a morning flight back at 08.00 on the Monday with the early start as above. Afternoon flights on the Sunday have a stop somewhere, though it doesn't say where, and have a duration of 15 hours or more, arriving back on Monday morning.

Glasgow seems much the same as Manchester - either an early start on Monday or a long duration flight on Sunday.

Added to the inconvenience, Glasgow & Manchester are around £300 compared to London Heathrow's just over £200 coming back on Sunday, or £225 coming back on Monday.

London Gatwick has only early flights both ways and would cost £1400 to come back on Monday.

The best option is through Heathrow but, with the limited availability, how many UK 'Catters can we expect at the gathering?

Hi just been checking myself.

I'd be going from Heathrow. There's a flight on Friday 30th from Heathrow at 1pm and a return flight from Reykjavik at 4.10pm on Tuesday 4th May. I can't get a figure on availability on these flights though.

Monday the 3rd May is a bank holiday in England so that should help with taking leave (for most of us).

Mind you, I've no idea where I'm going once I get to Reykjavik! The hotel Skarpi posted up looks good, although I haven't a clue how I'd get there, if Skarpi can confirm whether the hotel is open by the 30th April then I can start making reservations.

Yes, I know... but I guess it might be a consideration for me, as I'm thinking of going to both the Shetland and Orkney Festivals, and it occurred to me that, while I'm up there in the Frozen North, I could possibly hop across to Iceland too... but can't if the dates clash! :)

right : I talked to the woman in selfgathering house and she told me
that I should first know how many are coming so she can give an offer
, the house can take up to 70 people but I dont think so many will turn up but there is a kitchen and a room to stay in and play and sing
if we want that , now this place is not far from Reykjavík about 30 min
and about ten min from my home town .

so before 15th of February .... then I get an offer .
but also there is always the other way ( hotels )

near some advences in the future , such as now in February
we have a new calander year of the vikings started with special food and music , so that would be sometime in the beginning of Febr.

if the " Reykjavík folk festival " gets well and its gonna be in March every year , it could be around that, but best time is the Summer
here when everything is in bloom , May is great also
all the brids coming to live , the trees and plants , maybe mother earth
:O) who knows .

well as before ,I need to know before the Febr, 15th , so I cab get an offer for that self gathering hause .

Trying to organise last year's gathering has made me a bit cautious about committing hard cash until I knew if this gathering was a likely to go ahead. Although we never quite justified the "Euro-" prefix last year, what I did learn from the weekend was that the quality of attendees is far more important than quantity and so would be happy with half a dozen or so, providing I knew that they weren't going to call off just before the event.

Noreen & Stewart have already booked, and Bill Sables has contacted me about arranging travel. Others are looking promising. Skarpi, if you can definitely say that the event will go ahead, I will say yes, I'll be there.

I know what I was trying to say, but on re-reading yesterday's post, I don't think I said properly what I meant.

…….would be happy with half a dozen or so.    ………………. Skarpi, if you can definitely say that the event will go ahead, I will say yes, I'll be there.

I think that you need a minimum number of non-local Mudcatters for a viable international gathering. Local participation will, of course, add greatly to the occasion but generally tends to be on a more ad-hoc basis.

Last year, the number of hopefuls from abroad went steadily down until we only had two plus some friends. They, quite reasonably, reviewed the situation at my request and decided it would be better to call it a day. In the end, we had a quite delightful weekend with UK 'Catters from our region but their commitment came after the decision had been made for our foreign visitors.

If you get at least 6 non-Icelandic Mudcatters to commit to joining the gathering, rather than probable/possible maybes, then I will be one of them. Otherwise, I will be on the list of probables.

The later we meet the commitment level, the more difficult flights etc. will be to arrange and thus the more I will move from the probable to possible list.

Come on Mudcatters. I want to go to Iceland.

I agree that it would be good for us all to stay in the same place and I would be happy with the self-gathering place.

I could book the accommodation for anyone travelling with us in a group, Bill, but those who might be arriving or leaving at different times would be better contacting the self gathering place directly.

For those who are interested, Bill and I are planning to fly out from Manchester on the Friday afternoon and stay until Wednesday morning but, as I said earlier, I won't be booking anything until there are at least 6 non-Icelandic Mudcatters confirming their attendance.

As I see it, for those who have posted to the thread this year, up to now we have:
Noreen and Stewart who have booked their flights;
Bill Sables, Mouldy and myself are probables;
Wolfgang, Zen, and Leadfingers are possibles;
Karen k has shown an interest.

I've booked a flight an hour ago. I shall arrive on Friday and leave very early on Monday. It's crazy, but that's the only way I can fit it in my weekly schedule.

I'd love to stay where the others are staying.

More information later, because I'm off now for a two-weeks vacation on another island in the Atlantic, much more south.

Looking forward to see you guys.

Wolfgang
