When i was a kid in Cape Breton, they were still calling the MacKinnons backstabbers for some nasty incident that happened a century or three before. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Mar 08 - 01:27 PM It was rumoured, many years ago when the UK had a merchant fleet, and the crews thereof were recruited from the British Isles, that if you shouted 'You there Jock?' down the companionway to the engine room on any ship, you get the answer 'Aye' Giok [who spells it different] |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: Bee Date: 04 Mar 08 - 01:17 PM Sounds like a good move, Rock Chick. Little Hawk, the Scots have conquered the world. I'd bet there isn't a place on the planet without a whole contingent of people of any colour or ethnicity you can name with last manes starting in 'Mac'. I had an amusing conversation a few years back with a fellow artist (a very nice man: it was a pleasant exchange, we were at a craft fair) from Les Isles de la Magdalene, a tiny archipalago belonging to Quebec. He was opining that it was the last bastion of pure Acadian culture (and in some sense it is). He began talking of the unfortunate loss of the French language among many of the descended-from-Acadians people in the Maritimes, and how glad he was that he retained his mother tongue. As he waxed eloquent on this sad state of affairs, I noticed his last name, printed on his business cards. It was a very common Scottish surname. "You appear to have lost one familial language, anyway" I pointed out. It was marvellous. he admitted he'd never even thought of the fact his name was Scottish and he didn't know a word of Gaelic, didn't know where the family name originated, or even where in his lineage this Scot had inserted his genes. I saw him at the next year's show, and he had taken it really to heart, researched everything. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Mar 08 - 08:03 PM For instance... Ye'd gar Auld Nick himsel tae grue an' tae greet." Frikkin' inCREDible! I cannae fathom how a people sae gifted in invective as yon Scots did not succeed in conquering the entire worrrld! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Mar 08 - 05:26 PM The Scots have a simply astonishing talent for uttering hilariously characteristic and imaginative verbal abuse. If you don't believe me, go take a look at the last few posts on the "insult each other" thread... |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: fat B****rd Date: 02 Mar 08 - 03:42 PM My wife (Edinburgh born) and I arrived in Scotland on Thursday April 20th last year, within 24 hours we had boiught a 2 bedroomed flat. Relief washed o'er us. Up here you buy a property under the 'offers over' rule. my idea of offers over was another £1,000 or so. NO NO NO. In some case another £15,000 or so. Anyway we have been very lucky here and I'm glad we moved to Dunfermline. As a mature student I sit my 'prelims'in English and History this month and regardless of grades I fully intend to do another yearat college. The people here are no different, in the main, to people I've known anywhere else, but, so far, all friendly and, so far, welcoming. I hope Rock Chick and any other transplanted folk are as content as we are. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: kendall Date: 02 Mar 08 - 03:25 PM I've been to Scotland many times and always found the Scots to be friendly and funny.(If you don't call them English) Edinburgh is my favorite city, (and I hate cities)and the Isle of Skye is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Their pastries are heavenly and I love the highland pipes. Other than all this, it's pretty average.:-) |

Subject: RE: BS: It's official From: GUEST,rock chick Date: 02 Mar 08 - 01:20 AM Edinburgh is where my great grandfather was born, something I only found out, or maybe remembered, fairly recently. As for those 'long-asked questions about Scots that have perplexed most of us for so many years' I'm still new here so they will have to perplex for a wee bit longer I'm afraid! Yes on purpose, 'Inquiring minds' why not? People celebrate all sorts of happy things that happen in their lives, and post it on the Cat so why not? Although next years calendar may be taking it a bit far ;-) cant imagine me sitting there naked with maybe just a bowl of haggis and possibly some bagpipes to cover the essential parts (BG rc |
