Subject: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: GUEST,MRS. FLANNERY Date: 05 Mar 08 - 10:45 AM It was sadly announced by Ronan Collins on RTE radio to day. What a guy and musicmaker he was.Our deepest sympathy to Pauline & family. We cannot find words ---he will rightly take his place amongst The Celestial All- Stars. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: Declan Date: 05 Mar 08 - 01:42 PM Jimmy was without doubt one of the greatest guitar players I ever heard. I first came acrtoss him when he was effectively the 'house guitarist' in the Meeting Place in Dorset Street in Dublin in the late 70s and early 80s. He could play in virtually any style and was a great traditional, folk, slide, blues, rock and Jazz guitarist. He sat in with and recorded with many of the great names of the Irish music scene. Off the top of my head I can think of Christy Moore and Donal Lunny (Live in Dublin LP), Paul Brady, Freddie White, Red Peters Blues Band, Mairtin O Connor & Gary O Briain and hundreds of others. He was lead guitarist with the tragically short lived Hot Club Jazz outfit Hot Club which came to an abrupt end with the tragic death of Jimmy's long time collaborator bass player Declan McNeilis. It is a shame that Jimmy never got the level of fame and recognition that his talnt deserved. Jimmy will be sadly missed by music fans throughout Dublin and the rest of Ireland. Can I re-echo sympathy to Jimmy's family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: Declan Date: 05 Mar 08 - 01:44 PM Coorection - the band name in the last post should have been Hotfoot. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: Declan Date: 05 Mar 08 - 01:49 PM Sorry I'm a bit scattered at the moment. I should also have mentioned Jimmy's grat work with Kieran Halpin. They made a CD togehter called Acoustic which is one of my personal favouriute contemporary folk albums. I think Jimmy also palyed on Christy's classic albums "Whatever Tickles your Fancy" and "The Iron behind the Velvet". I'm fairly sure it was Jimmy who provided the brilliant slide guitar on "The Sun is Burning" on the latter album. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: Seán Báite Date: 05 Mar 08 - 03:02 PM Ah, more bad news. I expect he was young enough - only in his 50s ? Here is a song from TG4's great archive show, Siar an Bóthar originally broadcast in 1979 on the show Aisling Gheal. Jimmy plays slide guitar - but we only get to hear him - just very brief glimpse of his hand and guitar at the end : Christy Moore / Jimmy Faulkner - Galtee Mountain Boy Lovely rendition and playing. Peace to him. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist, Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin From: Declan Date: 05 Mar 08 - 03:28 PM Seán, Nice clip. You can see (slightly) more of Jimmy in this clip here on youtube. As far as I remember this was Paul Brady's first 'electric' band in his "post folk" era, put togrther to tour the "Hard Station" album. The line-up was fairly short lived. I'm not sure what age Jimmy was, but I think his fifties sounds right. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Connacht Rambler Date: 06 Mar 08 - 12:25 PM Jimmy Faulkner was an accomplished folk, jazz and blues guitarist and emerged on the scene at a time when the different genres fitted fairly comfortably beside one another in Ireland. I have a tribute site to Jimmy at http://www.iol.ie/~ronolan/index.html I also have a profile there of 'Galway' Joe Dolan, founder member of Sweeney's Men, musician, songwriter and artist, who died on January 7 last. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Jim Page Date: 07 Mar 08 - 04:11 AM I played quite a bit with Jimmy in the early 80s. Upstairs at the Meeting Place, at the Baggot Inn, Graystones, all over. His playing was fluid like water, beautiful with grace. He could get into a song like nobody else. We shared many great long nights of music and fun. There will never be another time like that and never another player like him. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2 From: GUEST,Guest,Non Resident Date: 07 Mar 08 - 06:03 PM Sorry about the length of this but one sentence is not enough - From a sixteen year olds viewpoint the Sunday afternoon sessions in The Meeting Place is something to look back on and thank God I was their to witness it all - The Floating Dublin Blues Band - and no one was more floating than Jimmy. Pat Farrel, Declan Mc Ginnis, Fran Breen, Redmond and Jimmy. I was probably one of the only non-"smoking" and non-drinking in the audience so perhaps my memories would stand up in court When Red took a well earned break it was Jimmys "chance" to stand centre stage and sing - not something he did too often. I think it was Imagine - but I stand corrected. What I will never forget are the duelling riffs between himself and Pat - two totally different styles but a fantastic sound. I can only imagine what this sounded like to the drinking and smoking community in the audience- I missed something perhaps. When I heard the news - yesterday 6 march - I checked out all the You tube links and of course it does not do him justice. I have some "snaps" of Jimmmy I took in the boat club in Clontarf last year after he played there but the qualtiy is nothing to write home about. What more can you say - I am thankful I witnessed some of Jimmy greatness - AD |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Bill Grogan Date: 07 Mar 08 - 06:28 PM ...as The Red said when referring to the band, "these guys can stand on any stage in the world and play with anyone." I think Jimmy was 61. The atmosphere in the Meeting Place was unique. As The Red said one night, "you smell like a lovely audience..." I also remember Jimmy's duels with Pat. The sad thing is Jimmy was always getting better and better, with The House Shakers he really rocked. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: Declan Date: 07 Mar 08 - 08:38 PM I've been trying to remember what songs Jimmy did when Red was taking a break. As far as I remember Boney Moroney and Come Down from the Mountain Katy Daly were two of his favourites. Anyone remember any others? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,MRS FLANNERY- Date: 08 Mar 08 - 01:45 PM At the breaks in Tullamore Jimmy and Declan used to a version of as he called it "Out together dancing Sheep to Sheep" .He also did a great mock take guitar solo on Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo. Those were the fun side of Jimmmy. But when the band reassembled the transdensation to wistful spinetingling ,goosepimpling& hair-raising riffs and breaks seemed as if he was possessed by some musically superior demons of the happiest species |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Maura in Australia Date: 08 Mar 08 - 05:44 PM It is with great sadness that I heard of Jimmy's passing. I had the privilege of hearing him play many times and each time it was a new feast for the senses. Rest in Peace Jimmy PS: A horse is a horse of course of course - Mr Ed - another Declan and Jimmy special. Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST Date: 10 Mar 08 - 02:59 AM E.Farrell - San Diego, CA RIP Jimmy........ very sad news to loose such a great guitarist. I was very fortunate to stumble across an inpromptu gig @ The Grand Parade Hotel in Cork Jazz Festival around 1987. Mary Coughlan took a break and never came back............ this guy Jimmy Faulkner stepped up and played with the band - drifting far from jazz and into many excellent covers which of course were completely unrehearsed but made for one of the most memorable gigs I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. The great Robbie Brennan was on drums that night........ I'm just glad to be able to say I got to see "The Master"................. Thanks giving me the memory that I'll cherish forever! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner. From: GUEST,Jimi Slevin Date: 10 Mar 08 - 07:29 AM I never worked with Jimmy, but have met him on many occasions over the years, and we've spoken, laughed and swapped yarns on many's the occasion. Jimmy was simply a great guy and superb musician. He effortlessly embraced and mastered many diverse styles and added the master's touch to countless fine studio productions. He even successfully tackled that Django Reinhardt Gypsy Swing style with the wonderful 'Hotfoot' back in the '80s. What a great little combo they were, and I'll never forget those smoky, Guinnessy nights in the Baggot with Jimmy's powerful, mused playing ringing through the rafters! In my opinion Jimmy Faulkner was more that just a nice guy and great guitarist who will be sadly missed. He was a major talent. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Dublin(March 2008) From: GUEST,Mick Treacy Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:24 PM I was sad to hear of Jimmy's passing, I first met in 1967 he was with a group called 'Gypsy's Poetry' in the Castle Inn. He was hardly out of the pram but boy how he could play guitar, I always felt that he must have started when he was in that pram because he was born to play. He'll be sadly missed. |
