Just had a look.
Were Jamie and Kathryn at Stamps? It all looks very quaint.
There's also one of Alun Parry singing Patsy at the White Hart when I looked. I know it was Holmfirth because I recognised his 'turn' tag!
I don't understand how it all works because there's stuff from James Cannon but not from Holmfirth - it's all a mystery to me.

I really didn't know I had so many friends and i've just laffed me socks off at the comments (truly)

yes Barnsley is on the folk map somehow, even Jim Potter has returned to playing and Dave Burland available too and Johnny Booker to boot!

We can even claim some credit for the Arctic Monkeys some of whom attended Barnsley College music dept as did Steph Shaw [very keen to play] and Dom Dudill who plays with the Sinner and James Cannon also from Barnsley, Dom was also at Barnsley College music dept

there is an active group too out of PADS with Chris McShane whose daughter Rachel plays with Bellowhead!

Jamie Roberts and Katrina Gilmore are another excellent young duo as well as Jamie being in Kerfuful and Kat in Tiny Tin ladies

So there you have it!!

I thought the Cricket Club was rather good. They were an affable bunch who know now there is more to folk music that Kum By Ya (sp) and Irish Rover. And the away team were def in love with our Zoe!

I forced me geetar on Steph at the folk club on Saturday and she sang Luka. What an amazing singer; makes the hairs stand up on the back of me neck. And beautifully subtle guitar playing too!

Barnsley has an amazing track record for talent (and not just the household names). There must be summat in t'watter.

Thanks to everyone who helped make it a great weekend.

Sorry we couldn't get to see GP at the Shaw but I had some stuff to do that wouldn't wait

The Friday night Folk Club in Stamps was a most enjoyable occasion - with Hamish, FYRISH, String Theory and Zoe Bottomley, and floorspots from Heather Woodhead, and Steph Shaw and Leon O'Doherty (both Music students at Huddersfield University Centre Barnsley). We were a festival guest short so we extended Gilmore Roberts' spot(again from Barnsley) who covered more than abley!

Dead chuffed as a group of Lads from the Cricket Club stayed all night on the Saturday. It ended up evolving into a folk-club, rather than the session we planned. Padgetts singing was amazing (just before he fell over), and it was great to have Ani and Gerry there too.

Interestingly enough, according to posters in the bar the CC used to have their own song that the captain used to sing at the end of the season - I think they should see if they can find someone who can remember it.

I know it was 1 am Ray I waited up especially for you just to make sure you had wibbled and wobbled you way home safely from the Barnsley Folk Club. A lot of people show a lot of concern including PC Guest who I had to reassure that no Hamsters had been injured during the Wibberly Wobberly Working Workshop causing you to increase your Carbon Foot Print (see previous posts).

Whitby Folk Week is apparently, I was told off the record, thinking of adding an Extreme Wibberly Wobberly Workshop starting at the top of 199 steps. Personally I think this will be a none starter as this would involve getting the Barnsley Lads out of every Public House and Club on Church Street and up the first step.

I will be busy for the next few days writing the Wibberly Wobberly Workshop Marching Song. To the Tune of McAlpines Fusiliers so far I have some of the first verse!

As down the Glen came Ray Padgett's Men with their instruments slung behind them.
They wobbled away till nearly break of the day picking up Ray Padgett when they found him...............

Impossible to imagine the amount of alcahol James Cannon and his crew swallowed, resulting in a slurred and sad rendition of what we would regard of folf music, sad to see a guy who could normally play pretty good sounded terrible, brutal. Terible band, brutal performane.

To all the artists who have left comments here -
I'm so glad, as are we all, that you have all enjoyed yourself - you aren't just saying it so that you will get asked back are you?
No but seriously I was a bit concerned that you might take it personally that so many people chose to stay outside and enjoy the sunshine rather than sit inside and listen to wonderful music.
I think I managed to catch at least a bit of just about everyone's spot in the Old Bridge and I made it to some of the pub stuff - we've had some excellent music performed by some lovely people. Even Hamish managed to pull out the stops for an audience of 1 on Sunday afternoon. Thank you Hamish, and Deidre, thank you for being that one.

Thank you Cath and all of Holmfirth for a WONDERFUL weekend. Splotty and I had a briliant time. We especially enjoyed War and Peace, Mr Fox (pure theatre), the egyptian dancers, meeting other mudcatters (ray padgett, dozy rozy etc.) and of course the SPOONS WORKSHOP. The weather was brilliant and so was the local fish and chip shop (the best fishcake I ever had for breakfast on Sunday morning!!) Speaking to other Mudcatters, it was suggested how about a Mudgather at the festival like we do down South. It's a lot of fun and just needs a catter from up there to organise it in a friendly hostelry in the town. Hwyl (have fun) Pattie and Ned

Can anyone help! Dozy rosy has just told me that she has lost her paper and comb at the festival. Anyone finding it should return it to the Nook. I suggested that she should just go to Woolworth's and buy another but she informed me that this was her Special Comb it's a Martin! Model Number DB5! Dozyrosy say's that she will just have to rely on her Gibson Shaky Egg at Sheply unless it is returned or she can find a replacement.

There where a couple of injuries after the Wibberly Wobberly Walking Workshop I am informed by the Festival Committee that are not thinking of Cancelling this event which is good news. Instead they are going to include it in the official program of events for next year.

The incial findings of the Health and Safety Executive, who's Officers are based in the Nook, was that at least one of the incidents was caused by Ray Padgett failing to turn up for the rehearsal of Wibberly Wobberly Walking Workshop on the Friday Night. When, as a safety precaution, the Barnsley Lads waited in the pub until first light before attempting to go over the route. When Ray went off on a shortened route, on the Saturday Night he attempted his assent starting from the Cricket Club he failed to Wibble when he should have and then wobbled instead. This caused my own personal tent, I found on my return to the Campsite, to be completely flattened. Other campers on the site heard the sound of the air rushing from the inside of my tent. Realizing that this was more than Ray's normal flatulance heard during his return to the Campsite rushed to Ray's aid.

The Barnsley Folk Club are organizing a charity Concert to raise funds to help any poor unfortunate Field Mice, Hedgehogs or other small mammals that may have been injured during this years event.
Ray is having a Stanner Stair Lift installed as he say's he is finding the steep clime into his sleeping bags more and more difficult each year.

I'm back!

Too much to drink Saturday although I took it steady!

The weather was too good for England and the morris and longsword and garland dancers provided a spendid spectacle for tourists and folkies alike

Good to meet up with old fiends the heck contingent, Mick McGarry and Mary who came Sunday and Murph and Gwen

Les from Lincoln, Roy Clinging, Fyrish and Monologue John, Lindsay on pa and of course all the regular Holmfirthers and Committee, Ned and Patti, Brian Howard and the spoons and the catters, not to mention George [Tyke]and Dozy Rosy [Bev]

Carmichael are a very professional act with superb piping from Mark

Soundsphere four very distinct voices singing in a number of languages ~ at a folk festival! but very entertaining

o and yes I was one of two in the wibbly wobbly workshop ~ fell over ~ damage minimal fortunately [some say]

Met one or two new people and I will be checking out web sites shortly

Lin the cricket club is next to the bowling club which is next to the campsite. If you aren't camping it's just past the co-op and on the way down to the campsite by an unmade road next to the foundary.

Land of the Summer Wine.
Holmfirth is in West Yorkshire about 6 miles from Huddersfield.

Update on programme - the Saturday night concert with Andi Neate, Roger Davies, Les Barker, Pete Morton, Mike Silver and Johnny Coppin has been put back 30 mins for logistical reasons. So it starts at 7.30 and goes on until 11.30. But still a bloody good concert and all for £5.

The camp site is in good condition and certainly not too dry and hard but equally it isn't too wet either. The hard area near the kids play area is a bit puddly but if the weather stays good that should dry out by Friday.

John Cooper Clarke tickets are nearly at an end, a notice will be going up on our website on Tuesday...You can still purchase tickets via the Picturedrome website...please note it is unlikely' that there will be any tickets on the door..

Certainly is.
We don't have a 'ticket'.
Most events are free.
The only gigs you have to pay for are at the Picturedrome,(£10 Friday and £15 Saturday) CragRats, (£5 I think) the Ceilidh (£7) and concerts in the Old Bridge Hotel (£5).
The rest of the stuff in the pubs is free but you will be expected to put your hand in your pockets when buckets are passed among you.
Please come along - we've got the decent weather ordered!

I must admit you could be less subtle and posted to every Festival Thread Sorry I can't be with you as my Carbon Foot Print is too large.

As for the French Woman that travels round with me, what goes on is just between us however. I will honestly say that my French Compion has taken me to places that no other woman ever has and we have reach the Highest Plato's together. I can also assure you that Car Sharing is better for the environment in ways you have not even thought of.

Dozy rosy has been very understanding about our relationship as I have been open and honest with her from the start.

No I do not have massive pair of Carbon Feet. I have a Low Carbon emission Car that can do 50 miles to the Gallon and a solar panel charging my Caravan Batteries when possible I Sail on Tall Ships to shanty festivals. I don't Fly off on foreign parts on package holidays or eat Scottish Salmon which has been flown from Scotland to China to be packaged and then flown back to Scotland to be distributed to shops in the UK and Europe. I also recycle my tea bags once used by giving them to Soldier Boy.

A clarification on ticket sales.

All concert tickets (including Picturedrome but excluding CragRats) are available at the TIO in Holmfirth.

Tickets for Old Bridge Concerts are also available at the Old Bridge and I have a small number for anyone who wants to send me a cheque and sae.

Ceilidh tickets are available at the TIO. I don't have any but can point anyone interested towards the person that has some. They are not available at the Old Bridge unless I manage to get some taken there!

Well not only are there concerts, but a festival wouldn't exist without "mainly yourselves"

Plenty of folk clubs and singarounds and musicians sessions and workshops with great strength in depth

A festival needs to mix both old and new and folk has somne knowledgeable old people

Holmfirth the town lends itself to dance teams on good old tarmac! outside the town centre pubs with great weather what more can you need

Just to confirm that the timetable is now on the website so you can get some idea of who's on where and when.
The programme is nearly done and will be off to the printers this weekend so that it is out on the streets by the end of the month. That must be a record - it used to be an achievement if it was available by the time the festival began - but it wasn't in Phil's capable hands then!!

The timetable (subject to amendment and confirmation) should be on the Holmfirth Festival of Folk web site in a day or so. It is done in my own inimitable style and not how it can be viewed in the printed programme which should be on sale by the end of April but I'm sure you will be able to find your way around it!
Also tickets are now available at the Tourist Information Office for the concerts at the Old Bridge on Friday and Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons and the Saturday night ceilidh with the Climax Ceilidh Band. Treebeard + Paul Pearson

Treebeard were formed in 1998 by Haze & World Turtle brothers Chris &
Paul McMahon plus Paul Chisnell (Haze, Three Legged Cat, Old Pekuliar),
Gordon Walker (Ant Hill Mob & guest on World Turtle's 'Wilderness of
Eden') and Chris Jellis (Old Pekuliar).
The band play original songs and tunes as well as a selection of rock,
pop, folk (& even country!) songs in their own inimitable way. They
describe their style as 'Heavy Wood', acoustic music played on a range
of instruments, including guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki,
accordion, balalaikas (of all sizes), plus assorted percussion, topped
off with 4 & 5 part harmony vocals.
The band have recently been joined by Ceri Ashton (on flute/fiddle) of
ceilidh band The Outlandish Knights & folk trio Hiraeth.
Treebeard released their debut CD 'Heavy Wood' on Gabadon Records in
2002 and are currently working on a follow-up CD. They have a track
"Train" featured on the "Forged in Sheffield" folk compilation.

Also anyone who would like to help would be welcomed with open arms. We can't offer much in the way of free ticket as we don't do tickets for much but they could get a nice rosy glow knowing that they have done something to preserve the future of the festival!
