Subject: Obit: Roger Coult, Woja the Hippy
From: Tim Leaning
Date: 10 Mar 08 - 01:33 PM

In his sleep 9th march 2008.
Not a national hero or man of world wide renown.
A lovely man who helped a lot of people to find the courage to make their music.
He wrote many fine songs that only those that knew him have heard.
He had a hard life in many ways and gave what he could afford to give of himself.
He had many freinds here in Grimsby
He was a good man and a good freind.
He died in hospital in Hull where he was undergoing treatment for cancer.
God Bless you
Hippy

It's a wonderful obituary when a person says what's in his heart for a friend who's passed on. Condolences to you, Tim. He sounds like a great fellow.

Tim, I want to meet you one day. Any person that could write such a wonderful description of a treasured friend is an extraordinary person. Roger was lucky to have you as a friend, and obviously he was an extraordinary person to have inspired such love in a friend. His voice is already found in the people whom he encouraged to sing, so his life goes on.

I wish you all the very best, and may God be good to Roger.

All the best,

Mick Lane

I would like to add to Tim's post about Roger Coult. I am sorry it is a bit long. I only know a little about him, I had only known him a few years. He was not a saint, he would hate to have been painted like that, but he was a very special man.
Woja will be missed by so many. Much love to his family and all those who were his friends. It was a big shock, I think, that Woja died so suddenly, even though he was very ill. It really wasn't his time yet...I still can't believe it...
After being rather nervous of my first sighting of Woja as a tall, hippyhaired man in his long leather coat, so much so, I didn't introduce myself, even though we had spoken online...I found him to be a gentle, kind man. As Tim said, he encouraged others in their music and in his own music, he played and wrote with genuine feeling. He wasn't one to start trouble, but he most definitely had the courage to speak out and state his loyalties if he felt passionately about something.
He had a quirky sense of humour. He often wrote brilliant blogs. The invasion of the teddybears was one of my favourite and we continued the joke for months...(he would say I should be writing this in orange italics so that it was invisible to the aforementioned fearsome monsters in cute disguise as all those who read it, were comforted to know they were colour-blind to orange,....nonsense but, harmless and daft, honest, it was funny....) yes, he had a zany sense of humour but I never heard him use it in anything but a gentle, and never cruel way...
Oh Woja, I was so sad and so shocked to hear the news yesterday. It was my birthday and I was gutted about that for a moment but then I figured, I will remember you with much love and a smile, every year on that day. I also believe you would want all those who knew you to remember you a positive way and to talk about you with a smile. As, another of your friends said, the 12inch version of Knocking on Heaven's Door, when you tried to involve the whole pub and not leave anyone out was one of the 'Woja Set of Moments' we will remember. You warned me when I came to visit you that you may start joking about your hospital treatment, as it progressed, in a macabre way, saying it was just your way of trying to deal with it and cope with what was a very shocking and frightening time for you. You had some tough times in your life, and I know those who cared about you, tried to support you as best they could.I think you knew that.
I will miss our 'pretend sparring' about guitars versus pianos, you were always so supportive of my 'terrible' instrument of choice! :-) You were a lover of language and its intricacies, and I will add !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as that was another of your pet hates but always a joke.
Woja had just started upon a course of treatment. Who knows whether it would have been successful, or not? I think it would have been a very long and painful time, with much doubt about whether it was going to do any good. If you had to go anytime, I am glad you didn't suffer too much of that treatment, only for it to prove no use.
I am buying a notebook for anyone who knew Woja to write an entry about good times they remember sharing with him. If anyone wants to contribute, please see me at music stuff, those who know me, or PM me and I will add it to the book with your name. I hope you are at peace Woja and we will miss you.You were a master with language and would have written this so much better than I can...I wish you hadn't knocked on that door quite so soon. Love and hugs, Rocky x x x

This weekend I have lost a friend. To myself and Nicola, Roger was always a gentleman. When we first began patronising the Tap & Spile in the spring of 2004, he was the first person to befriend us. It was Roger who encouraged me to attend the Open Mic and Acoustic Nights which helped me to gain confidence as a solo performer. I know there are many others who had the same experience. He was such an intelligent man, always up for a good discussion and debate about the ways of the world. I know he had his troubles and I regret not helping him more to overcome his problems. I shall miss his company and sense of humour. Most of all, I will remember him for his love of beer, music and performing. A couple of his songs, particularly the one he wrote about his father, remain favourites of mine. I will never be able to hear The Levellers song 'It's A Beautiful Day' without thinking of him performing his cover version. Wherever you are now Roger, I hope you have many Beautiful Days.

Having known Woja for just over a year i can honestly say he was a one off. He was different to say the least and a perfectionest in everything he done. A highly intelligent person as others have said and i feel honored to have know him. He may not be here in body but his spirit will live on through his music. We are all lucky to have him imortalized on recordings he has done. This is a sad day for music lovers in Grimsby. You had lots more to give Woja, Rest in Peace mate.

WOJA....What can i say that has'nt already been said...I knew he was ill..but did'nt know how serious..but never found the time to visit...and that hurts...he found me & my mate Tony..and introduced us to loads of wonderful people thru music...but it goes beyond that when you got to know the man...he sometimes lacked a little confidence in his music and perhaps life..i can relate to him... but the next time he was absolutley brilliant and beaming with it...besides his outstanding Computer IT skills he too helped people with.....he grew with people and allowed them to grow too...even in our/my short time of knowing him..to me that says it all..
We'll all Knock on that door one day...and i can picture him with his guitar saying...come on you lot what took you so long...
Mama take this badge away from me
Cause i can't use it anymore
Its getting dark to dark to see
Feels like i'm Knocking on heavens door
Goodnight Roger and God bless mate...
We'll see you again one day cos i really do believe...xxx

So sorry to hear that. Although he came several times to Faldingworth Live, I never got much chance to chat with him, because of too much to do.
Woja, you are now in peace and hopefully on that magic carpet ride to somewhere that is nice and peaceful, where you can play music to your hearts content.

I first came across Roger at the Grimsby Tap & Spile Acoustic nights. As a long time guitar player but a relative newbie to playing in public, I sometimes suffer with stage fright. He was the M.C. on my first open mic night and his quiet encouragement made me feel welcome and helped me get through my set.

Roger did the artwork for the cover to the Grimsby Tappites charity CDs, so whenever I play them, I'll think of him.

I had to sit down and work out how many years I had known Woja. Twenty-Four. So many great memories of a kind, sweet human being. He and I both had a perverse pleasure in apalling puns and adventurous music. and beer and cheese. Can I reccommend looking at woja.blogspot.com?

I'll miss the old sausage so much...

For Woja
I have bought a small box which I would like to collect photos of Woja with his friends, to pass on to his family. If anyone wishes to email photos, PM me for my email address and I will print them off and enclose them with the others. If you haven't got copies I will happily copy them and return them if you don't mind.
I will also bring paper to the Tap and other music events for those who wish to write a brief, (or long!) message or remember a particular moment with him that touched you or made you laugh.
I would like it very much if his family could be given a collection of happy, funny or special memories of Woja from those who knew him as a friend.
(I also wondered if any of you have recordings of him, particularly including any out-takes!)
Sorry if this seems maybe a bit OTT. I just feel so shocked that I guess it is just something, I felt would maybe nice to do.
Hope to see some of you at the Tap tonight. I also hope we can make it a raise your glass to Woja night, although I think it will be very poignant. :-(

I don't think anyone one here knows me, but Rog and I sat next to each other in class for 5 years. He was a smashing lad then, and when we met again after 30 or so years, and played a few games of seriously serious pool in the Tap he was just the same. Haven't seen him for about 3 years and I'm very shocked and sad. Listening to Bert Jansch playing Davy Graham's Anji whilst typing this - hope he would have approved. Myself and John Sills hope to be able to go to the funeral. Please let us know......

So many good friends. This is what I wrote in my blog, the day I heard of Woja passing away.

"I remember the first time I met Woja, at the Caistor Open Mic in January 2006. It was the first time I had ever performed on my own in public at such an event, and after coming off the stage, saw a vision in the form of an ageing hippy in a leather hat coming towards me. He gave me a huge hug, and told me I WOULD be playing on his next CD.

From then on, I saw Woja regularly at the Tap and Spile, and other musical events, and on getting to know him, found him to be a highly intelligent, musical, princpled man, with a very dry sense of humour, and I developed the greatest respect for him. I have fond memories of jamming along to Knocking on Heaven's Door. It was such fun all us musicians clattering into the open mic area, giving Rob Hanson nightmares about the number of inputs needed for Woja's entourage.

Although I never got to play on Woja's 'next' CD, I feel extremely priviledged that he asked me to play on Jasmine and Smoke for the Tap & Spile Charity CD.

Woja was a troubled man, who had many good friends who offered him help when he needed it. He was a true gentleman, who will be sadly missed in the Grimsby music scene. Rest in Peace, Woja."

A lovely, genuine guy, who will be sadly missed. To quote my husband. "Wherever he is, I hope he's got a guitar"

As a 'listener' it was always a treat when Roger got up to play. From the twelve inch extended 'Knockin' to the lovely, heartfelt song he sung about his Father, Roger always performed with enthusiasm and with a smile on his face.
I haven't known Roger for very long but my life is certainly richer for having known him.
Wherever he is let's hope he's got a guitar.

Woga was one of those rare performers who are capable of spontaneous witty repartee off the stage as well as on.

We have shared many nights out with the boys, also with the girls (Wog liked to tag a long on girlie nights out....for a laugh)

I met up with him a few months ago in Swigs for a (Large Willy or two) he had just finished writing a poem which he read out to me, it was hilarious, outragious and had me in stitches, It was nice to see that he was himself again after being troubled for so long.
I hope his many friends will remember that we all have to go at some point and to leave behind hope for others is the best thing a true friend could ever do, and he did that for so many including me,

Thanks Wog you helped me out of my writers block and get my life back

A man who knew all the right chords at the right time,
A man who struck a chord with so many people,
Quiet encouragement was his way
and many would be the less for it today without his encouragement.
I remember with fondness
a night when we both played at the Market Hotel.
A memorable night of music, song and enjoyment.
Rest in peace Woja.

Look, I shall be 80 next year. This morning I couldn't spare the time to put my lipstick on because at present it goes all over my face and I have to start again.   Yes, I am grieving the loss of my dear first-born child, but I am so heartened by all the loving messages that are coming from people I have not yet met, although I believe I know every inch of the way from my home to Hull and Grimsby hospitals, and only wish I had either been born with wings or that every other road user would get out of the ****ing way and let Woja's brother-in-law drive without having to use French expletives to get me wherever he is taking me on a particular day. Roll on Monday when I and Roger's family can meet all the wonderful people who have been so important to him throughout his troubled years.   I love you all, and promise there will be some treats for you on the day. Bring a tissue.

With love,
Woja's Mum

He was larger than life. A flamboyant friend to all. His enthusiasm for his music rubbed off on all of us . As the song says' "You don't know what you've got till it's gone!" We certainly don't. A gentleman, a great muscian, a friend. Lost from us. But I have your CD's my friend, you won't be far away.

WOJA
From Jim White

Don't fit me in a box
Give me a clinical description
Don't categorize me
And give me one of your prescriptions.

I'm far too complex
To be labelled with just one name
To many molecules
Make up my precious brain.

I'm me and that is all
A man of many pieces
A super human being
At the top of his species.

So don't categorize me
Take me for what I am
Someone full of life
A complicated man

To my beautiful friend Roger I dedicate this poem

Beautiful Dreamer a poem by Stephen Foster

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away!

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng.

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Hi youse two
He realy did enjoy his visits to your lovely Folk club.
He came and supported me when i ended up solo at Faldinworth live too.
Jen was too ill to travel or play so I was really pleased he wanted to come out there.
I was still getting me leg pulled about the lost capo incident in the summer last year.
Got a lot of memories of Woj,doing stuff and being there.
He seemed to know quite a few of the performers at Faldingworth from earlier times.
Take care

A special word to J.a.b.   I have just seen your wonderful poem, and it has touched my heart. He did tell me how much it mattered to him that you put your precious little daughter into his arms at a time when he wasn't the flavour of the month. Yesterday you were inconsolable. I do really want you to be feeling better today, now that you have expressed your heartfelt feelings. You are a lovely lady and a loving big sister to my granddaughter. I believe that Roger would want us to be together in every sense of the word, and don't forget that I know quite a lot about how very much you had to cope with during those difficult years. I look forward to spending more time with you and am so very glad that all of us who loved him could be together to celebrate his life.

Just to let you all know that the bucket collection in aid of Shelter raised £318.43p on the day of his funeral. You probably realise that the rather odd amount is due to people at the Tap & Spile reception putting their change from drinks into the bucket.   This money is, of course, in addition to any sent direct to Shelter by post or internet. I have no idea whether or not Woja ever sought help from them. I simply wanted to give that organisation some support in his name to help ensure that it can continue to be AVAILABLE to other homeless persons in their time of need. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed so generously.

How regrettable that I never knew Roger face to face, but how dear to me are his precious Mum Sheila, sister Shirley, brother Martin, and their families, and knowing them and their love for Roger brings him closer to me than mere blood relationship, and I have a great sense of loss, but no delusion that it is but a poor shadow of the loss for you whose lives he has shared.

Since Roger's deliverance from the pain and prospect of its merely being prolonged by the only possible treatments, the words of Australian poet C.J.Dennis have constantly revisited my mind...

"Now is the healing, quiet hour that fills
This gay, green world with peace and grateful rest....
Now... The dear, soft darkness comes."

Vale, dear cousin, and as others have so movingly said, Sleep Well.
Phyllis.

What a pity that you didn't meet Woja whilst you were in UK, but you did the next best thing in meeting Martin and getting him to sign one of his discs. You have been a great source of strength to me in these sad days. Much love, Sheila.

one week in and I was smitten, how could you not be....
dads opener to mum was "he's a bit older than our Nita"
ever loyal, mum replied "our Nita's no spring chicken herself"
they saw past the numbers, obviously? as I smiled at mums maternal insight?!
of course there were sad times, but smiles still sit on synapses
waiting to be catapulted into consciousness?... drifting
off to sleep being read Rumpole (voices and all), e-mail acrostics,
jokes about how the sun almost made Ross House look like
a piece of architecture and fab halloumi food...

recollections of music and words, laughter and warmth,
joined with gentleness and love... my wish?? Simply that you
can feel these things now

My big brother was a great man. I know that now. My biggest regret is that Roger didn't know just how great a man he was to others, and how much of an influence he had on people's lives. I know, though, that he will continue to influence people's lives for years to come, and in that I take enormous comfort. I know that Mum and, more importantly perhaps, Natasha will do so in the days, months, and years to come.

(1) Thanx for your message, Greenie. Seeya soon, eh?

(2) Can anyone confirm the actual date of this month's Open Mic, please?   According to the CDs, it should be "last Tuesday", i.e. 29th April. But the reason I am querying is that I had a date to come to the October 2007 Open Mic. when Woja should have been hosting, but he went missing before that happened. The date then was 23rd October for Open Mic, but that WASN'T the last Tuesday. So, if April's is going to be on 22nd (not 29th) I'll need to know fairly quickly so that arrangements can be made.

Ta, ever so.

Hi Sheila, I THINK it is the acoustic night on the 29th April, which is the 'quiet' one without PA. I will send the Tap number to Shirley on myspace, or it is in the book, I think. Really sorry I can't PM you on here but it doesn't let you send PMs to guests. I rang the Tap the other day and they said there wasn't anything on Tuesday 22nd but I'd feel happier if you checked with the pub, in case it has changed.
Love to you all and maybe see you there if you go.

If I upset anyone for saying this, I am sorry because I really mean no offence. This is maybe a bit emotional but it is meant from the heart. Tomorrow, well, it is actually today, now, is my birthday, no big deal really, but I was devastated last year that this was the date,if any, you had to go, Woja. A year later, I do miss you and have done a lot over the last few months. I know I did not know you like many others did but I will remember you this year, and every year to come...not just with sadness but also with huge affection, love and gratitude that I had the chance to know you just for a short while. I will remember the daft verbal verbal silliness we shared, the brilliant times playing music together with others and you being a true individual, one of a kind. I will remember you singing Beautiful Day and mucking up the timing so we got the giggles at you and ended up winging it to fit round you. I will remember recording on your songs and the gentle teasing you did to put everyone at ease. I will remember the time at Swigs when you got angry that musicians were being treated with little respect and you stood up in their defence. The Teddy bear post-it war, the piano versus strings joking followed by you sticking up for me and defending me to others for wanting to play my piano.
I do not put you on a pedestal, I just would like to see you sitting right next to me and everyone else, still. Thank you for letting me know you for a short while and I will be drinking to you, it may be only an orange juice but I will be thinking of you and those who miss you so much. If there is a door and a heaven they will have let you in by now, cos you always made the knocking last for ages until every, guitarist, mandolin player, comb and paper enthusiast had a go doing a 'turn'!
My life is richer for having known you, Woja. Excuse the sniffling and soggy keys, but I am smiling also at the memories of you that I will remember particularly at this time. Thank you for being you xxx

I wish I was as good with words as you always were, to be quite honest this is extremely difficult for me because I feel as though I should have said something more meaningful on here earlier, but i couldn't find the words, and I still haven't. I just hope that you know I always loved you, no matter what happened, I thought about you everyday, and I still continue to do so. I wish things could have been easier for you, I wish I'd been there to attempt to make things easier for you. Despite the large length of time we spent apart that I grew used to, I now feel as though I have lost a part of myself. Today is a difficult day; I can't believe it's been a year. I've found myself listening to Springsteen a fair bit, you say it doesn't matter if i don't remember, I don't but I hope it comes to me one day

One of the most beautiful things I read on here was from 'our Nita' who said - and I quote: "smiles still sit on synapses waiting to be catapulted into consciousness?" words so highly relevant and so highly evocative they made me laugh and cry at the same time. They're just so completely fitting for Roger. I often hold on to that sentiment. I would imagine that other people do so too.

Time has a strange way of always seeming to belong to the future and then suddenly sneaking in to the past. Today seemed to be a long way away - and now it's been and gone. (It's 00.09 the day after the date of Roger's funeral) A year ago, everyone, I think, was shocked, stunned, horrified by the sudden turn of events. Today marks the first full anniversary of Roger's life - everything else (Easter/ father's day/ birthday/ Xmas/ etc.) has been revisited.

And now - there remains the future - and 'Nita's words'. I think she was extremely intuitive and exceptionally wise when she used those words for Roger. For each and every one of us "smiles still sit on synapses waiting to be catapulted into consciousness..." I look forward to every single smile from every single memory - and I think we all do. Everyone knows who 'Nita' is - but I take my hat off to you lady. (if that's not rude!) :) I think you have written the most beautiful tribute to Roger that I could imagine.

Still thinking of you sweetheart. Heard mention of friends going to Switzerland. I remember your reaction to Gruyere. The scene was stunning - sunshine and gliders - the cheese factory - and the amazingly different experience of the mount - cold - winter - ice. When we climbed the hill to the town, the beauty of it overcame your senses and you cried.I shared your emotion. And then - the Giger museum! Unexpected. What a find! What a day!I'll never forget it. One of the best days of my life. And yours - I know. We had woderful times :)

Who is Joe Offer?

What's wrog here?

why the need for naming?
can't grief be both public and private? public in its sentiment? private in its details?

what is the purpose of this site???

I thought this site was set up for Roger. I thought it was about tributes/ statements/ anything [nice] about Roger.

Why no anonymous posting?

Some people are posting memories - and some people are being voyeurs.

Why?
We've had too much trouble with people hiding behind anonymity to cause trouble. so we had to change policy and require names. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I'm sure you can come up with a name. It doesn't have to be your real name, just a distinctive name you use consistently every time you post.
