Subject: Three Jolly Coachmen From: E-rock Date: 14 May 99 - 02:07 PM Here's a tough question. Has anyone ever heard a funny verse tacked onto the end of Three Jolly Coachmen? It goes: He who shusses Tuckerman's at ninty miles an hour He who shusses Tuckerman's at ninty miles an hour Has a pretty funeral Has a pretty funeral Has a pretty funeral With lots of pretty flowers. I'm trying to figure out where this came from. |

Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: Tiger Date: 14 May 99 - 02:15 PM Tuckerman's Ravine is on the side of Mt. Washington (New Hampshire). It has long been considered about the most difficult skiing (or hiking) in the East. You have to hike up there with your skis, there's no lift, and it's brutal coming down. No doubt this extra verse was composed at some friendly watering hole near the end of the run. ....Tiger

Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: e-rock Date: 14 May 99 - 02:15 PM Tuckerman's Ravine is on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. It's incredibly cold (you can still ski it in June) and steep, and you have to hike to get to it. It's only for diehards. It's been a macho thing to do for New Englanders for the past many decades; in fact, I learned that verse from my father, who learned it in college in the late fifties. |

Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: e-rock Date: 17 May 99 - 03:52 PM Mario - I've tried to search "Tuckerman's Ravine" for historical songs, jokes, etc., and I can't find anything. I've also tried "skiing songs," and nothing! |

Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: MMario Date: 17 May 99 - 04:08 PM sorry - I misunderstood your request. Have you checked with the Mt. Washington people? If it is a local thing, which it appears to be, they might have some history on it. MMario |

Subject: ADD Version: Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl (ski) From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Feb 22 - 02:04 AM Gee, I came across this thread 23 years too late. As soon as I saw it, I knew where it came from. I have a 1955 edition of Song Fest by Dick and Beth Best - except that my editionw was printed in 1958 and given a new cover and the title Linde Ski Club Song Book, from the Linde Employees Athletic Association in Tonawanda, New York (page 104) DLANDLORD FILL THE FLOWING BOWL Landlord, fill the flowing bowl, until it doth run over. Landlord, fill the flowing bowl, until it doth run over. For tonight we’ll merry, merry be, for tonight we’ll merry, merry be, For tonight we’ll merry, merry be, tomorrow we’ll be sober. (similarly:) The man who drinks good whiskey clear and goes to bed right mellow, Lives as he ought to live, and dies a jolly good fellow. The man who drinks cold water pure, and goes to bed quite sober, Falls as the leaves do fall, so early in October. The man who drinks just what he likes, and getteth “half seas over,” Lives until he dies, perhaps, and then lies down in clover. The little girl who gets a kiss, and runs and tells her mother, Does a very foolish thing, and seldom gets another. The little boy who gets a kiss and runs and tells his brother, Does a very useful thing, and brother gets another. The man who skis with a mighty schuss, and takes the trails wide open, Skis till he hits a tree, and all his bones are broken. The man who schusses Tuckerman’s at ninety miles an hour, Has a pretty funeral, and lots of pretty flowers. The man who skis with well-bent knees and plenty of vorlager, Skis as he ought to ski, and lives to drink his lager. The man who swings a mighty axe, and chops just like a beaver, Hangs all the trees in sight, with a ringing cry of timber! Timber, timber! Hangs all the trees in sight, hangs all the trees in sight, Hangs all the trees in sight, to the ringing cry of timber! The man who schusses Tuckerman’s at ninety miles an hour, Has a pretty funeral, and lots of pretty flowers. The man who skis with well-bent knees and plenty of vorlager, Skis as he ought to ski, and lives to drink his lager. 23 years! Do I win some sort of prize for slowest answer to a song request? |
