Where is a good place to find texts and music for English folk songs? Especially the songs sung by Oliver Buttle?

Try www.contemplator.com/folk - sorry cant't do the "bluey thing"! I'll take notice next time someone gives the info. This is a reasonable site with many songs and tunes available as wav. files

You can get the new edition of "One Hundred English Folksongs" by Cecil Sharp from Amazon for about $15. (Ships in 2 or 3 days, they say.) If you go through the link to Amazon from Mudcat, Max will get a small percentage to help him continue this great web site.

Don't worry Graham--I call it the blue clickie thingie.

Here's the link to Lesley's Folk Music of England, Scotland, Irland, Wales and America site.

...and they are MIDI files, not wav files. I especially like this site because you can read the lyrics as you listen to the tune, AND there are wonderful links to follow and follow and follow!

Margret Dean Smith's 'A Guide to English Folk Song Collections', 1954, lists all songs in English folk song collections (and some books that aren't really such) up to 1952, incuding many in the English folk song journals. In 1951 the English Folk Dance and Song Society published "An Index of English Songs contributed to The Journal of the Folk Song Society' and its continuation 'The Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society' to 1950". In a few years we can probably expect another volume giving songs collected since 1950 (with journal name now chanced to 'Folk Music Journal'. But there are already a lot of songs. Steve Roud's index keeps expanding and he's now working on obscure American collections, too. He said in a recent note that few Americans as yet have his Index, and he is working on the American folksongs to make it more appealing to them.

Richard Robinson's tunebook

Dave Herron's chapbook lists UK books currently available on traditional song.

It's online at the traditional song forum website.

The Traditional Song Forum

The Village Music Project

You can listen to some of that English folky stuff at mp3.com:

James Berriman and Sue Moffat
