Subject: Stan Ellison From: Stokey Folkie Date: 16 Mar 08 - 06:39 PM I was taught folk guitar by Stan Ellison in Manchester over 20 years ago, and I often wonder where he is now and if he's still performing. He was a great singer and incredible guitarist, wrote or at least arranged 'July Wakes' (Threads, passim) and recorded with Lea Nicholson (they are both credited for 'Song For a Dead Mole' on the Scarborough Fair folk compilation cd of a year or two back). Other than that, no trace... Would be good to know if he's still about. Incidentally, my virtuosity on the guitar plateau'd at the exact point I stopped taking lessons from him, so I could probably do with paying him for a couple more... |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Mar 08 - 05:58 AM I just did a search of past mudcat threads and the name has been mentioned several times as writing the music for July Wakes. Nobody appeared to actually know him, but there are new members all the time, so maybe you will have better luck now. One suggestion made was to try e-mailing Mike Harding's folk programme on the chance that Harding might have known him at the time he recorded July Wakes. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Ray Date: 17 Mar 08 - 12:05 PM I've often wondered what happened to "Black" Stan. Not seen him in years. I assume Mike would remember him they were from the same era. I seem to remember he made a living as a scaffolder? Ray |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: Stokey Folkie Date: 17 Mar 08 - 05:39 PM Thanks. The Mike Harding route is a good call... |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Neil Torbett Date: 17 Apr 08 - 04:46 AM I was very close to Stan during the 70's when I lived in Whalley Range in Manchester. I was at the Transatlantic sessions with him and Lea, and was part of the chorus on the inimitable "God bless the unemployed"(my one and only claim to fame). Stan taught me just about all I know about folk guitar. He was an amazing musician. Practiced 10 hours a day till his fingers bled!! Wrote some brilliant songs which one day I hope will be heard again. We had some amazing times together. I moved away and lost touch but last thing I heard was he was still alive and kicking musical ass in Beswick? Manchester. I'd love to meet up with him again, he was an inspiration. Good on yer Stan. |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Apr 08 - 12:18 PM Stan perhaps you could be tempted to drop in on Chorlton Folk Club? Every Thursday at the Cricket Club on Ellesmere Road or the First Wednesday Singaround at the Beech on beech Road? Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,blinddrunkal Date: 10 Sep 10 - 10:34 AM Is Stan Ellison the same "Black Stan" who used to play in The Cross Keys on Broad Street Salford - a heavy beard ('though he often wore aftershave)- I last met him, clean shaven, in The Salutation with his guitar "pupil" Dave Scott..... oh and he fell off his stool too. |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Phil gray Date: 14 Mar 15 - 05:36 PM I played, along with Stan and other musicians, at an old folks home in South Manchester in about 1969 or 70. My strongest memory is of one of the old guys shouting "when's the bingo?" In the gap between songs. We all went back to Dave Bullock's house and jammed for hours. Stan taught me to play 'Ain't She Sweet' and I got to play his ancient and war torn Gibson. A great picker. |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 17 Mar 15 - 01:58 AM Hi. I remember selling that old Gibson to a friend called Phil all those years ago. Was that you? If so do you still have it and could I buy it back? From what I know now it probably needs a neck reset and a replacement bridge. Still I never got a better guitar. |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 17 Mar 15 - 10:55 AM Hi Stan, you dropped in at The Dulcimer in Chorlton last year. We are back in the Beech for now - it would be good to see you again Stan and hear that amazing mando-guitar that you brought. Best wishes pp The Beech Band Current Home |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 18 Mar 15 - 07:45 AM Hi Les. It's back to Wednesdays too isn't it? I've been waiting until it gets a bit warmer and rumour has it that the Beech gets a bit crowded and the natives aren't always friendly. Is it true? |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 18 Mar 15 - 08:25 AM Hi Stan, we are back in the Beech on Wednesdays. We are in the Snug but it was only crowded on the night of our 6th Birthday of tunes - around 40 people turned up and the staff were a bit harassed. It's a great little room in a great little pub - give it a go as soon as you can Songs 1st & 3rd, tunes 2nd & 4th |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,dermot Date: 08 Jul 15 - 11:21 AM Back in 1982 I use to have guitar lessons from Stan. He was, and I am sure still is, a simply marvellous musician. I was far to shy to play in front of him which was just fine as I got to listen to him for much of the lesson - the best gig in town! Hope you are well Stan and thanks for the encouragement and brilliant lessons. dermot, kery, ireland. |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,dermot Date: 23 Jul 18 - 09:45 AM STAN, We've got a garden full of vegetables just dying for a tune. Whenever I play anything for them they try and bury themselves back into the ground! Also we have bucket loads of your favourite beer .... FREE BEER! There are flights from manchester to shannon and cork or if your rich you could take the ferry and drive across Ireland till you reach the west. More importantly I am on the verge of mastering that demon C chord and I feel your presence could inspire me to finally make it! How is recording the new songs and multipart guitar tunes going.Would love to see you over here one day. dermot and rosemarie |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 24 Jul 18 - 11:03 AM Hi Dermot. Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the invite. It's too hot to do anything right now and sadly that includes recording and visiting. I recorded some songs a couple of years ago but I'm not about to let anyone hear them. I've made some videos containing notation and tab synced to a recorded track. Here's one; The Downfall of the Ginn Cheers Stan |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Marian Date: 24 Jul 18 - 06:47 PM Stan, I remember you well from some heady days in Tufnell Park in the 1970s. I believe I treated you very badly around 1972 when I refused you and Lea Nicholson the sublet of my flat in Burghley Road whilst I went to Morocco with my then Irish bf Florence and let it instead to someone less worthy who made a complete mess of it. There was also someone called Sid who liased with everyone. You probably don't remember me, I have always loved traditional music but never acquired any competency in performing myself. Nice to know you're still around and sorry again about the flat! |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 25 Jul 18 - 10:16 AM Hi Marian. I thought that I had been sacked by 1972 but, of course, I was 'there at the time' so don't really remember it. I certainly remember Sid. Was it Sid who signed on as a dancing bear? I also remember someone signing on as a shepherd. Not much call for that in London. I don't remember plans for a flat for me and Lee either so less need for you to feel sorry. Cheers Stan |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: theleveller Date: 25 Jul 18 - 11:42 AM Strangely, I wrote the sleeve notes for God Bless the Unemployed. Not that I ever met you - I just knew the guy who designed the cover. I still have my copy somewhere. |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,DERMOT Date: 25 Jul 18 - 12:30 PM THE GINN SOUNDS LOVELY STAN. I ALWAYS ADMIRED THAT PERCUSSIVE BOUNCE IN YOUR PLAYING. STRONG HANDS! AND I'LL KEEP PESTERING YOU TO VISIT ASWELL! THESE DAYS I TEND TO LISTEN MORE TO CLASSICAL MUSIC AND THE SACRED MUSIC OF TOMAS LUIS DE VICTORIA.I KEEP AWAY FROM THE LYRICS WHICH ARE BASED ON CATHOLIC LITURGY AND SERVICES AND JUST MARVEL AT THE BEAUTY OF THE VOICES. WHO WERE THESE VIRTUOSO VIOLIN COMPOSERS YOU MENTIONED? OH AND HAVE YOU HEARD ANY OF THE SLACK STRING HAWAI'I GUITAR PLAYERS. THEY SEEM TO USE A CAPO TO RETUNE THE GUITAR TWICE TO THE TUNING THEY WANT. ITS REALLY WILD AND UNUSUAL BUT REALLY GOOD.I HAVE SOME RECORDINGS IN THE LOFT BUT NO IDEA EXACTLY WHERE.HAVE WELL OVER A 1000 GRATEFUL DEAD SHOWS WITH NOT THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF LIVING LONG ENUFF TO HEAR THEM. IT WAS GOOD TO SEE NIC JONES PERFORMING WITH HIS SON. ANYWAY I'LL LOOK FOR THE SLACK STRING STUFF AND SEND IT TO YOU. LET ME KNOW THOUGH IF YOUVE MOVED. ITS GREAT TO SEE THE THREAD GOING AGAIN. DERMOT |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST Date: 26 Jul 18 - 07:54 AM Stan, nice to hear from you. I just unfortunately found out that Sid AKA Anthony Charles Siddons died in Stockport in 2006, he worked as a roadie amongst other jobs. Nice guy and very funny. His widow Pam I gather is chair of the West Didsbury Residents' Association and has written a book about the local history. |
Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 27 Jul 18 - 02:30 AM The Italian virtuoso violin composers, I suppose, start with Correlli, you will have heard of Vivaldi and there was no shortage of others. They were like the rock guitar stars of their day. I've come across some Slack String on the Acoustic Guitar Forum and liked what I heard. Sad news about Sid. Cheers Stan |

Subject: RE: Stan Ellison - where is he now? From: GUEST,GUEST Stan Ellison Date: 10 Jun 19 - 03:10 AM Hi Tony. Nice to hear from you. The pub back of the dilly was the Jolly Angler. The best pint of Hydes ever. I've not been there for several years. I actually managed to get myself barred from there once but was later forgiven. If you are ever back in Manchester let me know and we can meet up. Cheers Stan. |
