Congratulations Adrien, looks like you've got a good line-up there, am looking forward to it. It's nice to be able think about being out there listening to great music on a warm day in July with all this @#$!*% snow on the ground.

Your right Bobad, this winter has been a long one.. However the signs are starting to appear. I'm now feeding Red Wing Blackbirds and Grackles.

Thanks tom.
Booking and balancing the acts to me is the most fun. Yes it is work but as they say if it is fun than it ain't work. Now the real work begins. The marketing, the begging for a few bucks, the actual presentation on the grounds. will we have enough volunteers, will we be able to do this or that. There are still a thousands questions to be solved.
But it will be done.

Looking forward to being there. I'm very happy to know that Mr. Murdoch will be back. And Garnet Rogers is always a treat. I remember him as a skinny young fiddler backing up his older brother.

you're welcome bobad, but at least I didn't mention the fresh Georgia shrimp, grouper and oysters...

been recording some of the bird calls for the archives....mockingbirds are fun... talk about a repertoire... but the marsh mufferill is elusive... flys backwards to keep the wind out of its eyes!!!

At this point they won't Peace. Main reason we are not doing a Blues Sunday like we did last year. The fellow running the Smoke Meat restaurant is a blues fanatic and also runs a blues venue I believe 3 time a week at his place of business. We are currently working on putting on a supper but no details at this point.

At this point the food thing is still being discussed. Thanks clipper, but do not ask Pete. We have kitchen facilities at the Orchard and we are working on a supper. There will be a fast food set up but not confirmed who will do it. The Franklin Fire Department will be asked if they are interested.

Jeri!!, New Hampshire is not that far. If you decide to come please bring up a case of Scotch. You could bootleg the stuff here and it would pay for your trip. John W. and I will be the first in line. As I understand the cheapest place to but liquor is in your State.
All kiddying aside, do think about coming.

I know cigarettes are BAD. That said, acknowledged--nay, PROCLAIMED, let me say that scotch is not good for people. I had a few drinks of it once and it made me sick as all get-out the next day. VERY sick.

Jeri the transporter of drugs... sheesh!

Listen, booze is cheaper in Canada, or it was, and I don't know if I'd want to be seen buying anything but single malt. And what kind of Marlboro? Red? White? Green?

Now, I can't take money for this stuff or I'm selling black market, so I have to ask: what's in it for me?

Red. I roll my own most times and prefer that my half dozen a day are fairly strong.

I had two drinks of scotch once. One of these and one of these. Gave me a ripping headache for two days (and nights). Bad stuff that 'water of life'.

Off to bed. Been working my butt off all weekend laying hardwood flooring. You know Jeri, maybe half a case of single malt would do. in exchange I would get you a place for Friday and Saturday night along with a free breakfast. A single malt would sure be nice right about now.
Peace!,I was a smoker. Four and a half years now since my last drag. I don't crave it and I don't think i will ever smoke again, but i have to say as an "X" smoker, the wonderful feeling in that inhalation was as good as sex. Maybe that is why after sex so many folks would light up. Just to lengthen that great feeling. I better go to bed.

It's a good thing you guys are going off to bed.

Congratulations, Beer, on your new festival. As was said earlier, "Apple Hollow Music Fest" is a great name for a festival!

And I'm glad to see that Bruce Murdoch will be performing at this festival. As was the case at last year's concert, I'm sure he'll have some great songs to share.

Thanks Azizi, I have to admit that I really like the name as well. It was a natural fit. Were located in the Chateauguay Valley(hollow) and the spot is an apple orchard. Actually it might be a good idea to insert the McMillan web site where the festival is taking place. Let me try the blue clicky. www.mcmillanorchards.com/

This thread has taken a strange turn from apples and music, but I have to venture an opinion here. The very cheap scotch you can get in New Hampshire is pure rotgut. The good stuff, Talisker, Lagavulin, LaPhroig, etc. costs about the same everywhere (big bucks) because it's taxed at source by the Brits. It's even expensive in Scotland.

But, yeah, apparently as well as beer & scotch & hamburgers, I'm looking forward to some music as well!

So the good lady said: " You have four members playing string instruments and an accordion. Why not call yourselves Four Strings and a Squeeze box". End of story. Back to the hockey game.

Off-topic

Well, Daddy's dancin to the accordion tunes... he's gettin jiggy with it
-gnu

gnu, I'm curious about your use of the hip-hop phrase "gettin' jiggy". As far as I know, "getting jiggy" means "dancing dirty". It's another way of saying "dancing freaky" or "gettin down" on the dance floor [the latter being a compliment and nothing more]. I think that "gettin jiggy {with it}" largely refers to sensous butt shakin. But I suppose that phrase could just mean "showing your best dance moves" [since nowadays, in social dancing, the best dance moves are the ones that are the sexiest].

Did you mean that Daddy {you or your father?} are/is dancing or are/is going to show your best moves {dance your heart out} to the accordian music [at the festival]?

I'm curious because I'm interested in how African American/hip-hop slang is used among various populations {and age groups} in different geographical locations. I'm asking this on this public forum because some other folks might also be interested in the meaning of this phrase and what you meant when you used it. *

Thanks in advance for your response.

* Of course, it's also possible that I'm the only one interested in this and/or other folks already know what you meant when you used that phrase-and the word "Daddy".

Um, ah, er, gosh... dance a jig? Irish jig? Accordian music figures large in many Celtic tunes. I didn't mean to step over any boundaries. And, I don't think I did.

If Will can come into my living room and say that phrase on Oprah's show and I happen to use it as a jest.... ?? Come on, eh?

So. I meant it as a joke, within it's context. As far as Daddy being me or my old man and the rest of the questions... it was a joke. Calm down, take a pill... DARE I say chill?

Lighten up darlin!

Hey gnu! So you want me to lighten up? Well, I'm tempted to say, but it's gonna be summer soon, and therefore I'll be getting darker", but if I say that you might think I'm serious about that too. Oops! I said it didn't I. Well, that was a joke, but my question about you use of the word "jiggy" and "daddy" were my asking questions in an arm-chair etymologist kinda way.

I know I have a weird sense of humor {humour}, but I didn't mean my questions to be interpreted as though I was on a set {angry} or that I took exception to any slang terms of African American coinage or subsitute meanings being used by folks other than African Americans. As Oprah Winfrey said in one of Senator Barack Obama's rallies in South Carolina this year, that would be "playin me small".

Before you mentioned it, I didn't "get" that the word "jiggy" came from the word "jig" meaning "dance" or "a type of dance". See, that's why sometimes I dare to ask questions even when there's a possiblity that folks might mis-interprete your motives for doing so. I have to tell you, gnu, part of the reason why I dared to ask you that question, is that I feel as though I know you as a friend on this forum, and I knew you were cool {as in "good people"}. And the other reason why I didn't hesitate to "butt" in and ask that question about whether jiggy meant the same thing as I thought it did {and that you confirmed it did} was that through their postings on this forum, I have also grown to know the other folks who have posted on this thread, and I knew that they were also cool, and I also consider them my online friends, and therefore wouldn't I thought that they wouldn't mind me going off-topic in this conversation for a minute or so.

[It just occurred to me that Senator John McCain uses that phrase "my friends" a lot. Well...when I use it, I mean it]. And so, gnu, my friend, I'mma say the same thing to you that you said to me-"Calm down, take a pill... DARE I say chill?" And don't forget to lighten up! Summer's just around the corner.

Best wishes,

Azizi

I think it was Reagan...Sorry I've become a political junky. It's becoming an addiction...I'd rather think in musical or slang terms.

What I mean, gnu, is that it's okay that you called me "darlin". I know you don't mean it in the sweatheart sense of the word. Then again, even if you called me "sweatheart", I know lots of men call women that but they don't mean anything personal about it.

As the hip-hoppers say, it's all good. And I'm serious about that.

And for some reason this old song popped into my head but with a change in lyrics-"It's Cherry Pink and Apple Hollow time".

But then I goggled it and it turns out the words are actually-It's "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White". White? Who knew?!

Not that this has anything to do with the price of beans in Boston.

But I just felt like sharing.

Here's a link in case anyone wants to check out the words to that song that probably isn't a folk song, not that it matters to me since I'm not really a folkie, or maybe I am. It depends what the meaning of folkie is.

I'm preparing to post my passport paperwork presently. Thing is, I can get into Canada without it but maybe won't get back into the US unless I get deported, in which case, who knows where they'll send me.

Changes have been made on the web site. Breakfast, lunch and supper will be available at a very affordable cost. But the main change/addition is in the Start up time for Saturday affecting all groups as we have added the Songwriters' Circle for 90 minutes starting at 3 p.m.
I am thrilled to announce that Mike Regenstreif will host this program. Once you have read his bio you will understand why I'm so happy to have him accept the invitation. Check out all the site as there are other minor changes and additions.
Adrien
P.S. Thanks Bruce

I'm glad you're feeling better, Adrien. And I love your idea about a Youth Stage! What a great addition that will be!

I hope this will provide opportunities for children & youth to experience some singing along and hopefully also some dancing along to music that isn't R&B, Hip-Hop.

No disrespect intended to all songs from those genres. But I just like the idea of introducing the idea/reinforcing the idea with children/youth that there are other types of music than R&B and Hip-Hop.

Azizi, this is basically what I'm asking for.

Apple Hollow Music Fest invites your audition to perform at this years Festival located in the Chateauguay Valley in Ormstown Quebec on July 19th 2008.
This is the first year that we are hosting a "Youth Stage" and we hope, if successful, it will become an annual event.

The A.H.M.F. is a "Folk" oriented musical weekend that includes blues, folk, bluegrass, gospel, and celtic. At this time, rock, rap, hip hop and new country are not part of the venue. The judge's decision will be final whether to accept or reject acts.

Instruments such as acoustic guitar, fiddle, piano (key board) flute, and harp are all welcome. Electric guitar, drums will be questioned and could be refused. Sound system will be provided.
No tapes, c/d's, karaoke machines for singing or dancing will be permitted.
A total of 20 minutes will be allotted to each performer.
Stage will be located outside and in case of rain will be moved in doors.

There will be a stage manager who will manage the youth stage. We ask that the performer arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance and report to the stage manager. This festival takes place at McMillan Orchards, 1639 Route 202, Franklin Centre J0S 1E0. Visit our web site at www.applehollowmusicfest.org
Must be a student at one of the following schools:
Arthur Pigeon (Huntingdon), Chateauguay Valley Regional High (Ormstown), Howard S. Billings (Chateauguay) and Ecole Polyualente Louis-Philippe-Pare (Chateauguay.

Those who perform must realize that this is more for public experience and exposure than for money.
Each performer will be given one free pass for a relative or friend.

I haven't looked as yet but I know what you are refereeing to. The web master has been busy doing this but the spammers keep getting through. The only way he can really control it is if folks that want to participate to this form become members. Then you would have to have a pass word to get in. I told him not to go that way as yet and but first lets see if there is a large group that responds. If not we will probably drop the form as he has to clean it out almost every day.

Jeri, it is good to hear that your all pumped up. Me , I'm a little tired. I've been working on this since last September. I have noticed that the same thing happened when I was working on the last festival I was involved with. I think it is called burn out. Well, not really. In a few days I'll be in full gear again.

Just spent the last 3 nights in the bush with my 9 year old grand son doing a little rough camping and fishing, which we were luckey enough to catch and have for breakfast yesterday morning. I would send you all a picture but a little difficult in this thread. The Sugar Bush we slept in was just beautiful. And here is the best part. We were not bothered by black flies or mosquitoes.
To repeat Ron's words, it will be a pleasure to meet you Jeri.   And to have Bruce back home again will also be a treat.

Now lets keep this thread going until it happens.

Our program is finally finished. I hope we didn't miss anyone. Final proof reading will be done this evening. Counting the wee ones(Youth Stage) we have 65 musicians appearing on stage. Not all at once as the hay wagon would collapse.

That lovely place of the heart.
Let us go to Apple Hollow
Where fiddle and guitar ring out
And a singing voice lingers
In the dark of the night.

Had to make some quick adjustments Sunday. The Bridge End Dairy Co. had to cancel due to the main singer being sick. Replacement is Ian Gray who runs a coffee house called the Adair Coffee house. There is a web site for it. Great stage presence and wonderful voice. Stuart MacDougall who is the lead singer not capable of making it is very disappointed as he was also to be on the Song Writers' Circle. His replacement is a twosome from up state New York called "Crossing North". Both very good writers.

Oh, I am sooo needing some good news..what with all the bad things that are happeningd on so many fronts, including the tragedies and losses that several Mudcatters have experienced recently, and that we, their cyberspace friends and acquaintances have experienced second or third hand with them even if it was just by our reading about what happened, and offering our prayers, and best wishes, and the small degree of tangible support we could muster.

But life sure does take a toll, doesn't it? That's one of the reasons I'm really looking forward to reading some good news about the Apple Hollow Music Festival.

I hope that all those who are attending that festival and who are performing at that festival remember those of us who aren't able to be there. I hope you guys and gals post lot of reports, and maybe even some links to photos.

So "On with the show!"* "Full speed ahead!"* And "big ups!"* to Adrien, and Bruce, and Ron, and all others who are involved with the Apple Hollow Music Festival!!

* Substitute whatever sayings you prefer that express your hope that everything flows together for the good and this festival turns out to be an artistic, social, and economic success!

Re: the songwriter's circle at Apple Hollow Music Festival

Garnet Rogers, one of Canada's greatest songwriters, will be at the festival and yet he's not listed for the circle. That's a surprise, especially since Garnet and Mike Reganstrief are friends from the Golem days and Garnet's played live on Mike's radio show quite a few times.

Can't wait to buy that new CD from Bruce Murdoch.

I want to alert people that I just started a new Mudcat thread about Bruce Murdoch's new CD "Matters of the Heart". Here's the hyperlink to that thread: thread.cfm?threadid=112880&messages=1

Please post your comments about Bruce's new CD on that thread. And if you've heard some of the songs on that CD from radio shows that Bruce has been on, or otherwise, and are waiting with great anticipation to hear the actual CD, but haven't heard it yet, you can spend some of the time waiting for your CD talking about Bruce Murdoch's music on that new thread.

And last but not least, I announced on that thread and would like to announce on this thread that Bruce Murdoch has a new website at http://www.brucemurdoch.com/

That website was designed/developed by Mudcatter olddude {Dan O'Connell}, Dan volunteered his time, energy, and knowhow to make Bruce's website a reality. The website is still under construction, waiting for sound clips and other material from Bruce, but it's already looking good!

Thanks, Dan!!!

And thanks Bruce for your music.

....it's raining like crazy today... all the high humidity can defy gravity for only so long... we got lucky yesterday... hot, sunny and swampy...

just a short afternote on the days festivites.... not long after our set, me and Lorraine checked into an inn about a mile from the site, ( courtesy of Adrien), left the guitar and returned to enjoy the full moon rising behind the stage and the remaining fine acts.. when we got back to the Inn... we just sat in the car to enjoy the deep silence of the countryside, unwinding.... when we finally went to enter around 1:00 we found that we were locked out... so we returned to the empty fest site with the intention of trying to sleep in the car and collect the guitar in the morning... a light was in in the small bldg. that had served as a bar and instrument 'lock-up'... a man and woman were talking and cleaning up.... we told them what had happened and asked if it would be allright to try and sleep in the car..... well, they wouldn't hear of it... she called down to the Inn and the door was unlocked.... turned out that some other guest had locked the door behind after getting there earlier.... the two people who were so kind happened to be the owners of the farm that hosted the Fest... Gary and Linda (McMillan) Upton.... it was a funny way of making their acquaintance.... and I'm so glad that I did. Down to earth farm folks that opened up their home and hearts to all of us.... they were really impressed by the quality of music and the organization.... there are a lot of little things that add up to make something great.... this was one of them... it was a BLAST !!!!... thanks Beer...

The rain (and thunder and lightening) on Friday night made me feel like I was back home in southwest Florida but the vibe inside the barn at the jam session was an indicator that this was going to be a special weekend......and oh Lordy, what a great day Saturday turned out to be. What a great evening concert!!

Are there any instruments that Jou Tou do not know how to play? And hey, if he's going to sing a song about Verdun and Pointe St. Charles....I'm all in!

And what to say about that marvelous set by Bruce Murdoch? Oh my, I closed my eyes and listened and I was transported back to the late sixties in Montreal. And how about Ron Bankley's version of "A Fool Like Me" and their combined (and different) versions of "Last Man Standing")?

Later, I sat with Bruce and Jeri and April, listening to Garnet Rogers and watching the moon rise over the festival site....Perfect!!

Let's first of all give kudos to Adrien (Beer) who made this event happen. But he is not alone....Gary and Linda (MacMillan) Upton who hosted the event, my new friends Fred and Ruth Sundborg who taught me more about dairy farming in one weekend than I thought I could possibly know, Joe Byrd, and many, many, more.

This afternoon, I drove from Adrien's to Pierre E. Trudeau Airport at Dorval with Bruce's new cd and later, drove from Miami to Ft. Myers with both that cd and "Crossing North".

End of a perfect weekend!

Cheers,

Ken

I had a wonderful time Saturday at Apple Hollow. Mostly, the music ranged from good to great.

Highlights: Bruce Murdoch, Ron Bankley, the excellent songwriters' circle with Mike Regenstrief, Dara Weiss, Jou Tou, Four Strings And A Squeezebox, Crossing North, Storming Norman.

Ron Bankley's version of "Fool Like Me," my all-time favorite Bruce Murdoch song, was awesome. Bruce's own performances were superb.

Minor disappointment: Garnet Rogers. His voice was worn out and he seemed completely fatigued. He mentioned it was the last show of a 5 week tour. Maybe he should hold his tours down to 4 weeks. I've seen Garnet many times and his performance was far from his usual standard. Still, his songs are great and he was a trooper about doing the show. Chris Crilly's contributions on keyboard, fiddle and percussion were very good.

One big disappontment: Coming out of Dara Weiss' in the Barn stage, I heard what sounded like a great gospel group coming from the main stage. When I got there, I saw what I thought was a karaoke show with the gospel singers performing with pre-recoded tracks. However, at the end of the last song, after the audience applause had ended, the pre-recorded cheers and applause continued throiugh the speakers with one of the singers trying to catch the eye of the soundman to tell him to turn it off. It took about 30 or 40 seconds for the soundman to do it. That led me to think it wasn't karaoke, but lip-synching.

The gospel group would have been much better performing a cappella or with a single accompanist. When I go to hear LIVE music, I do not want to hear karaoke or lip-synching. In my opinion, there's no place for that at any live music event, let alone a folk festival. If this group really needs a big band to perform, then maybe a small folk festival is not the place for them.

Anyway, it was a great day in apple country. Congratulations to Adrian and all others involved for a fine first festival. I'm looking forward to next year.

The next folk festival on my agenda is Ottawa in mid-August.

I just received a pm from Adrien {Beer} who asked me to convey this message from him and to convey a message from Bruce as well.

Adrien asked that I let people know that he is still coming down from the festival and still has lots to do. He thanks you all for your well wishes & your support.

Adrien has also spent some time after the festival with Bruce. Bruce doesn't have access to a computer now, but he's told Adrien that he will be writing on Mudcat shortly. Bruce also wants people to know that he very much appreciates the well wishes, and the compliments, that Mudcatters and other people on his website have expressed about his festival performance and about his Matters Of The Heart CD.

Also, Bruce wants people to know that he's aware of that "Bruce has a Purple Face thread" although he hasn't read it yet. He thinks the idea of this thread is a hoot {or some words like that}.

I look forward to Adrien's and Bruce's return to active posting on Mudcat threads.

In particular, I can't wait to read what Bruce's comebacks will be to some of the posts on that Purple Face thread.

:o)

Here's a hyperlink to that thread in case people haven't had the pleasure of reading it yet:

Thank you all for the congratulatory notes. They are very much appreciated. I still don't feel like writing much due to the fact that I have been struggling with a bad cold and a fever almost since the festival. I guess the running around and the coming down afterwords was just the right receipt for a floating virus. I have lots of pictures and will get to them very soon.

We made lots of mistakes but none that can't be corrected. I asked the property owners to think about next year and give me an answer in two weeks if we are to continue. It is their land and they also went through a lot. I do feel positive however.
Later,
Adrien

I had a great time at the festival and it was wonderful to meet so many people either for the first time or again after a loooong time.

Got to co-author a song with Jeri Corlew. She's fantastic to work with.

We were able to get two days in the studio and we finished two songs for Youtube. What a process. Guitar track, then my voice track then April's voice then Jeri's voice. Then twice through lipsynching/filming then three hours editing. However, I guess if it was easy then everybody'd be doing it. Simon Jodoin is a remarkable engineer and Ron Bankley gave us some ground rules going in. That man is an incredible musician, writer and singer. Wonderful to work with on or off the stage.

I think we'll release one of the Youtube songs in a few weeks and the other in about six to seven weeks.

The link that Beer (Adrien) sent won't get you to the pictures. Google the festival and that will work.

Jeri......Linda and Gary Upton are their names and two finer people you will never meet....just ask Ron Bankley, who managed to get back into his B & B with their help on Saturday night. All of the folks who live down in Adrien's neck of the woods are pretty special...Fred and Ruth Sundborg, who I stayed with, are dairy farmers, and are just flat out, extraordinary people. Bill and Bernice Paxton, who kept the libations flowing are pretty cool as well.

Speaking of Adrien's family, I have a picture of Bruce with two members of his family taken at Adrien's house on Sunday morning. I'm holding on to it for ransom for a seat when he collects his Juno....or Grammy....or both!

Cheers,

Ken

Bruce-
Great CD. Sounds like your video session went well, also. I look forward to seeing you on youTube!

See ya next year again I hope, along with the other Cats.

Speaking of CDs, I'm also greatly enjoying two others purchased at the Fest:
Jou Tou and Plain Folk. By the way, Plain Folk bassist Val Teodori is an old friend from the NFB days.
