Subject: swindon folk club From: The Sandman Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:21 AM met Ted Poole the other day and he informs me that the Swindon Folksingers Club has had to move yet again. The new venue is MILTON ROAD CLUB, MILTON ROAD (off Faringdon Road) SWINDON, WILTSHIRE SN1 5JA. He says it is a very nice club room; very welcoming; with good real ales at club prices and good nearby parking. They had to leave the Gorse Hill Club due to the introduction of very loud rock bands in a different room badly affecting them but they left with no hard feelings. Contacts for the club are Eric Stott (01793 521301) and Ted Poole (01793 722335 guest Dick Miles, friday march 28 2008http://www.dickmiles.com |
Subject: RE: swindon folk club From: Brian Peters Date: 18 Mar 08 - 08:31 AM They've been in the Milton Road Club for some time now, and a nice venue it is too. I had a great time there last year, and I'm sure you will too, Cap'n. Say hello from me to ted and Ivy and the rest of the crowd. |
Subject: RE: swindon folk club From: Joy Bennett Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:20 AM I miss Swindon -- and Ted & Ivy -- for about 8 years I was there at least once each year - definitely for the anniversary show -- and perhaps performing at other times. Swindon, along with Bodmin and Llantrisant, are some of my favorite folk clubs in the UK (and Cornwall). If any mudcatter goes to Swindon, please send my best to Ted and Ivy Poole & Eric Stott -- in Llantrisant to Pat Smith, and in Bodmin to Vic Legg. I miss them (and the UK terribly) -- hope to get over soon. |
Subject: RE: swindon folk club From: henryclem Date: 18 Mar 08 - 12:59 PM I can vouch for the Milton Road Club - they are very friendly and the room is excellent. I get there are as often as I can - at least once a month - and it's always enjoyable ... unique in its way. Ted and Ivy have been in fine form there recently and I am proud to count them as friends. Not forgetting what a fine host Eric Stott is, and a group of regulars (of all ages) who are always welcoming to visitors! The club has a strong guest list, and celebrated its 48th anniversary in January (a wonderful night with Tim Laycock guesting) and it shows every sign of continuing for many years to come. Swindon's notorious one-way system can be a problem - the Club is pretty central and easy to find from M4 junction 16 (where I come off) but may not be so from other directions. They do show a map on their handbills, though, so it's worth intending visitors getting hold of one. The club doesn't have a website but I think there are contact details on Wiltshire Folk Arts site. I'm sorry, by the way, that I'll miss you there, Dick - My wife has an uncanny knack of booking my crucial dates for other things! I'll definitely catch up with you there next time. Henry |
