Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,Theresa Findlay Date: 30 Apr 08 - 10:55 AM Great night once again, we're now doing a raffle - proceeds to a new PA - tickets 50p each, so that's not bad is it? Look forward to seeing you all again next Tuesday 6 May. Keep up the practice. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Richard Bridge Date: 30 Apr 08 - 02:34 PM Folk club? PA? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 01 May 08 - 09:08 AM The P.A in the British Oak is a small one and is only really necessary when the pub gets crowded and noisy towards the end of the evening. (As most do). This is not a "folk club" as such, but an open mike (or not) session in the large bar. The only problem I can see with P.A is that it will attract more non-folk musicians and singers. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Mick Woods Date: 01 May 08 - 04:27 PM Our original intention was for an acoustic sing - around. This is still our aim. A small PA will be used for visiting guests if they require it and on nights when the bar is crowded - which has been the case the last three weeks - all there for the music as well! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole catcher's unplugged Apprentice Date: 01 May 08 - 04:36 PM Try playing in a crowded bar without a PA system, sorry it doesn't work, in my experience. Oh dear, I can't be playing folk music then....*LOL* Charlotte R |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Richard Bridge Date: 01 May 08 - 04:43 PM I should explain, Charlotte. Mick has heard me do stuff from at one end of the scale, Famous Flower of Serving Men or Knight William, to, at the other end, of the scale, Play with Fire and Summertime Blues (a bit like the way Blue Cheer did it) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,The Mole Catcher's unplugged Apprentice Date: 01 May 08 - 05:24 PM Fortunately, via my dad, I've heard of Blue Cheer, and heard that particular version of the song, must say I do prefer the Eddie Cochran version. the band and I performed the song in the Eddie Cochran style one night (and yes we used electric instruments), there were those that got it, and those that didn't, but it was alot of fun nonetheless. Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,Pete the Hat. Date: 15 May 08 - 02:38 PM Blackheath folk club is great with good singers/players and a nice friendly place in regards to the locals and the staff. "We want Fred Dylans" Excellent> |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,Pete the hat Date: 15 May 08 - 05:54 PM The word Chav these days is not in any way connected with the old word. Teenagers refere to it has C.H.A.V.Council House and Violent? Which is absolute bunkcum. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 22 May 08 - 05:32 AM The club has taken off well with between 15 and 20 musicians turning up each week and a dozen or so audience who have come to listen making total attendance 25 - 35 people. Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far - may it continue! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Dave Illingworth Date: 18 Jun 08 - 09:50 AM Our trio, provisionally (but clumsily) named GOLLOP/VAN-DELLER/ILLINGWORTH will be playing two half hour (or so)sets at the Blackheath Folk Club (in bar of British Oak, 109 Old Dover Road, Blackheath SE3 8SU) on Tuesday 24th June. Line-up:- Barry Gollop (acoustic lead-guitar/vocals) Steve Van-Deller (mandolin/10-string cuatro/slide-guitar/vocals) Dave Illingworth (rhythm-guitar/vocals) Material comes from the 1920s onwards, American & British, sad songs and good-time blues, by well-known and lesser known writers plus the odd original and a touch of "traditional". Basically songs we like to sing and play. Thanks Lynne for letting us do it. Dave Illingworth |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Richard Bridge Date: 18 Jun 08 - 11:57 AM Try "Gol-del-in" - sounds vaguely hobbit-ish |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Dave Illingworth Date: 23 Jun 08 - 10:02 AM Gentle reminder:- BARRY GOLLOP/STEVE VAN-DELLER/DAVE ILLINGWORTH at Blackheath Folk Club in the British Oak (see address above) TUESDAY 24th JUNE. Plus, of course, the fine local floor-singers. Thanks, Richard, for the name suggestion. Not sure anything elvish or hobbit-wise fits our music (although I do like Tolkien). We will get around to a name eventually. In the meantime, I look forward to meeting again a few old friends who I haven't seen for a while, and have promised to come. I hear from one of them that the British Oak beer is good - so that's a good start......... Cheers, Dave Illingworth |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Ian Fyvie Date: 15 Mar 09 - 09:21 PM Best of luck for your Irish Night. After our singaround tonight one of our supporters said he would be along to our tuesday singaround after he'd been to a St Patrick's night in the City centre. Of course we look forward to seeing him, but I suspect he'll find the St Patrick's Night goes on a lot longer than our SIngaround! Anyone in Brighton on a Tuesday off is welcome to come along to Cellarfolk; our singaround at The Round Georges pub in Sutherland Road. We gather from around 8.20pm. Ian Fyvie |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Tug the Cox Date: 19 Apr 09 - 11:59 AM Well done. I remember the Blackheath folk club in the pub by the railway station inn the early seventies, and loads of sessions at the much mussed Three Tuns. Funny about the Royal Oak, though, we went in after a Blackheath Morris practice and started singing only to be told that there was no music, as the customers didn't like it. The customers were actually joining in lustily, and complained when we had to srop. We all the spoke, loudly in Unison, the wild rover. The landlord didn't see the funnyb side and threw us out. That was 35 years or so ago, so the rules have obviously shanged. The beer was always good, though, the Courage best was delivered in 54 gallon Hogsheads. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: GUEST,John from Elsie`s Band Date: 19 Apr 09 - 12:16 PM Robin Gray and I used to run the folk club in the early 70`s in "The Green Man" at the top of Blackheath Hill. I`ve still got the poster for the Paul Simon night. The place closed during that decade and some poncy flats are now on the site. I hope they didn`t blame us!. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Blackheath From: Girl Friday Date: 19 Apr 09 - 04:41 PM Hello John. We're moving the club to Wilmington Great News Folks The Folk Club has a brand new venue, and it's not too far away from the old one. Lovely Pete has arranged for us to go to his local, The Foresters in Wilmington. It's address is 235 Dartford High Street, but that's at the pretty end! We start there on Monday 4th May. I know it's a Bank Holiday, but please make an effort to be there. We want to create a good impression. I have spoken to the landlady, Katy, she seems very nice and keen to have us there. We'll probably coming straight from Rochester Sweeps Festival. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&hl=en&tab=wl Thats the Google Map and directions from Eynsford So,let's make a date for Mondays at 8.30 starting with a singaround .
