We just re-watched the Australian film "The Picture Show Man" (1977). I always enjoy it in spite of it's short-comings. The actors and sets are wonderful.
Anyway there's a song featured in it that I've always wondered about.
It's probably called -- "Tap, Tap on my Window". I've tried other lines from the song without any luck. I can't find it anywhere. There's no mention of it on the film credits, nor on the Internet Movie Database. -- Which does say "original music by Peter Best. I take that to mean the theme song which is quite different in every way.
"Tap, Tap etc." sounds like an old song from close to the period in which the movie is set -- 1900 or so. I've heard it recently on the radio but I missed the comment about it.
I could post the lyrics if anyone else is interested but I'd have to take them from the movie and it would take time.
It starts:
Tap, tap on my window, could it be that you are still in love with me...
Mainly I'd just like to find out it's origins.
Cheers, Joy

Hello, Joybell.

I woke up and since sleep didn't seem to want to return, I came to Mudcat and happened upon this thread.

Unfortunately, I don't know that song you asked about and I also had no luck searching for it online.

But, you might be interested in this off-topic find:
http://library.thinkquest.org/18802/langtap.htm presents a short story written by Alizabeth Anne Bronsdon in the spring of 1995. [The young writer] "was given the line "Tap at the window" by her teacher and came up with the story herself. She wrote it in two 45 min. periods".

I don't want to give the plot of the story away but I'll say this much-the story has to do with a historical experience.

I hope you find information about the song that you're seeking.

Best wishes,

Azizi

Hoy,

I remember the movie, and the song. I seem to remember at the time the film was released that much was made of the 'original song' in the style of a vaudeville song? It was sung by John Ewart and another actor I think.

I used to know a bloke whose grandfather (or great-grandfather, I disremember) used to tour around the backblocks with his "picture show" outfit, his name was Phelan and he toured as Phelan's Magic Picture Show.

Cheers
Jennie

Ah! Thanks Jennie. If it is an original song that would explain it. It's sung by John Mellion (as the picture-show man) but taught to him by John Ewart (the piano player). At one point the rest of the cast join in and they all sing it.
It's a good copy of this type of song.
Cheers, Joy

Hello Jennie

I see back through some archives you knew the grandson of Phelan, who ran the Travelling Picture Show from Wallsend, NSW.
My now late, ex brother-in-law, James Taylor was a descendant of Phelan and recorded an LP, paid for privately, with the title song of Phelan's Magic Picture Show, and artwork with Phelan included.
A colleague with whom I work is also related to Phelan.
You will have to try and track the record down perhaps.

Glad others like this song, I am endeavouring to learn it from the film by taking down the words. Is there music anywhere...otherwise will have to learn it by heart.

Would also like to have sheet music for this song - a catchy melody.
