Subject: Washboards on culture show From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 23 Mar 08 - 04:27 AM Imagine my surprise, and delight, to see on last night's Culture Show (sic) on BBC2 tv (I only watch it for Lovely Lauren Laverne *BG*)to see a trio (Cave Singers)featured wearing battered caps and woolies like young "Last of the Summer Wine" actors and playing two (count 'em) washboards and guitar. Furthermore we are promised next weeks's "Busking Challenge" (popular music combos see how much they can earn in unpublicised busking in half an hour- current leader Roisin Murphy: £64)will feature rockabilly-quiffed film critic Mark Kermode's Skiffle group with MK on double bass. I make no further comment! RtS "If a thing is worth doing it's worth doing badly" (Chris Barber interviewed on Paul Jones Blues programme- I now take it as my musical motto!) |

Subject: RE: Washboards on culture show From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Mar 08 - 05:27 AM 'Ow do, ower kid! Yes, I saw them too (or them two if you prefer). Re the busking: I suppose the Beeb got the music licence sorted out before they went to it? They ought to say a bit about what's involved before encouraging us to go out and do it. I've been threatening to stand on street corers with my guuitar for ages; I'll wait till the grockles start rolling in, I think! |

Subject: RE: Washboards on culture show From: matt milton Date: 24 Mar 08 - 06:07 AM I quite enjoyed seeing the Cave Singers on the culture show. They were kind of like an acoustic version of Kings of Leon or something. Much better than I was expecting after the hype. |

Subject: RE: Washboards on culture show From: Steve Parkes Date: 27 Mar 08 - 04:16 PM Duh...! What happened to the post I sent yesterday? Try again Parkes (I know I'm in good company!) Right: now living on the Isle of Wight, in the Wild West (Totland Bay to you). Regularly appearing at: Dairman's Daughter, Arreton at their Tuesday night folk sesh; Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater, open mic night every 1st Fri; Downland Trad FC, Castle Inn Newport, every 2nd Fri (when I can); Bugle, Yarmouth, open mic every 3rd Fri. Attempting to work up a duo act with Carolyn, a jazz/country/folk singer. Also writing the odd poem (see how you get into bad habits as you get older!) and working up a bat-poem show with local poet Ruth Twyman for the Bat Hospital (she has a flock of her own). |

Subject: RE: Washboards on culture show From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 31 Mar 08 - 09:53 AM Update: Kermode's group riased about twice as much as the next highest busker but then the ringers Supergrass (who I believe are some sort of indie music combo)busking outside NT with full drumkit & amps raised even more (bottler was using a NT restaurant ice bucket). MK's guitarist did the old climb on the bass routine & tapdanced and Kermode played harp on a neckrack. Great fun. RtS |
