Subject: BS: Quotes that make me wonder...

In Charlotte, N.C., last Friday and speculating about a general election matchup pitting his wife against Republican John McCain, Bill Clinton told a group of veterans: "I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country. And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

Makes me wonder, too; I question whether what came out was exactly what Clinton intended to say. I don't mean that I can't imagine Bill deliberately playing around with implications, but this is really off the wall, and doesn't have any focus or direction. If it was carefully thought out and stated as intended, it's pitiful; would it be supposed to mean "instead of my wife, the devoted American, running against the two self-serving frauds who are currently in the running"?
My feeling would be that we will approach November with as clear an instance of his "great thing" as we're apt to see, and that the difference between the positions of the probable candidates should give most of us a clear opportunity to choose according to our sense of right and wrong. I personally feel quite strongely as to which of the devoted Americans now running would be the best choice.
As to his last sentence, he isn't that far from saying, "Would that people would actually ask themselves who is right on the issues, instead of all this other stuff..." Great, except for the question of who is muddying the water with "all this other stuff".

I know Obama will do that but he's being mighty generous to McCain.

IMO, there is another possibility, i.e., that Clinton was not complaining about the quality of the candidates, but about the relevance, or lack thereof, of the issues that become the focus of campaigns. See, the "actually" emphasis comes in on people asking the right questions, not on whether the candidates love their country.

So in attempt to demonstrate this nonpartisanly, it has honestly occurred to me to ask:

Re. McCain--being a POW is a bad gig, but why does it qualify someone to be Prexy? Wouldn't a degree in economics be more helpful?

Re. Hillary Clinton--why is having a husband who could balance a budget and get us out of a losing game in Somalia outweighed by the fact that Monica Lewinski couldn't keep her mouth shut about not being able to keep her mouth shut?

Re. Sen. Obama--why is who baptized your kids on a par with what you would do about our troops in Iraq?

I don't understand Mr. Clinton to be saying that Senators Obama and McCain don't love their country, any more than I understood Sen. Clinton to mean that Martin Luther King was zero because LBJ's signature was on the Civil Rights Act.

Quotes from politicians rarely make me wonder. Usually they confirm my worst suspicions.
