Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: MOSS TROOPER'S LAMENT
From: Lesley N.
Date: 16 May 99 - 09:38 PM

I probably should have done this in the other thread...

According to Vocal Melodies of Scotland (circa 1830-40) an unnamed lady presented this song to Sir Walter Scott. Scott gave it to Finlay Dun who created this arrangement. Finlay Dun was a music teacher in Edinburgh.

splent=armour for the legs
spauld=shoulder

Oh! a' ye gallant Borders!
Ilk water, moss and fell,
To a' your weel kent nooks and crooks,
Forever, Oh! Farewell!
For we'll go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
We'll go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O we'll go no more a roving!

Oh when the Har'est moon shone
What blithe times did we see!
On wanton naigs, wi splent on spauld,
We rade sae merrilie!
But we'll go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
We'll go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O we'll go no more a roving!

Our King's gane o'er the Border
In London for to dwell;
And friends we maun wi' England be,
Sin' he reigns there himsel:
And go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
We'll go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O we'll go no more a roving!

O how shall I, tether'd,
On Yarrow banks abide!
That far as Trent and Humber
Hae scour'd the Southrons wide.
Oh! to go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
We'll go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O we'll go no more a roving!

And how shall I follow
A droning plough's tail,
And how now break my bonnie Brown
To harl't like a snail!
And go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
We'll go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O we'll go no more a roving!

But when the blithsome Borders
Hae lost their riders gay,
The Scots will miss their hardy men,
And cry, Alack the day!
That they go no more a roving,
A roving in the night,
They go no more a roving,
Though the moon shine e'er so bright.
O they'll go no more a roving!

Nope - I thought I put the updated URL in the links - but here it is:

Folk Music of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and America

And if you just got to the root URL there is an image map to all of the pages at my site - Popular Songs in American History, Francis J. Child Ballads, Turlough O'Carolan and Taylor's Traditional Tunebook...

Sounds like a lot huh? But the Child and American Pages have the same music as is on the main folk page - The American page has American tunes (most being immigrant tunes, of course) by time period and the Child page has all the child ballads listed by number and volume as well as a complete list of them (I am up to 52 of them!!) Who says obssession is a perfume?
