Subject: BS: Lord Stanley's Cup 2008
From: Jack the Sailor
Date: 27 Mar 08 - 02:30 PM

Sid the Kid is back.

Considering the way the Penguins have played without him, they have got to be favorites to go through the East.

I am still a Senators fan and I now root for home state Hurricanes. But I am seeing an all water fowl final between the Ducks and Pens as very likely.

I'm hoping that Toronto or Washington make it and they play off against Montreal. Montreal would not want to meet Washington and Toronto always gives them a real tough time.

Haven't the Senators had Montreal's number as well?

It could be Montreal's year though, It wouldn't be the first time they rode a hot rookie goalie to the cup.

My Dad, Being a Protestant Newfie, cheers for Montreal only when Ryder is on the ice. (Protestant Newfies of his age in our neck of the woods generally grew up Leafs fan while the Catholics cheered for the Habs, I am not completely sure why.)

He is also a Wings fan when Daniel Cleary is playing.

I would imagine that would be because Toronto was seen as primarily an English Protestant city and Montreal a French Catholic city back when, but things sure have changed since, fully 50% of Torontonians are foreign born today.

As far as predicting their performance, the question is do they have enough Geritol to go four rounds in the playoffs.

It has been the tradition at Mudcat to encourage one another in one's encouragement of their teams, unlike the "trash talk" so common at umptyzillion other hockey discussion boards. Pseudolus began that tradition last year:
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it?
From: Pseudolus - PM
Date: 05 Oct 05 - 01:16 PM

OK Jack I have an idea...a small wager...no money, just pride. I like my Flyers and you like your Senators. The bet is this, whoever's team goes furthur wins the bet. The loser has to re-open this thread sometime next Spring and enter a post singing the praises of the winner's team. Aine seems pretty proud of her Stars, she may want in also. Just for fun, and bragging rights! whatdaya think?

Go Flyers,
Frank

And it has continued this year, with discussions already underway.

This is a fine thread for discussing the history of the Cup, as most of the posts seem to cover, but I'd like to refer continuing conversation on this year's playoffs back to the Ice Hockey 2007-08 thread. It and Pseudolus' first hockey thread (CLICK) have quite a few useful links in them.

I agree with you Susan and was a little surprised when this thread was launched but participate and should have mentioned the other thread where all this should have been listed. The main thing is to keep it friendly and pokes (in jest) about one team or another can be fun. Like Jack just did about the Wings and their Geritol. Jack, as far as this liquid boost, keep feeding it to them as it it has been working very well for them. Maybe not the Cup Stanley in the past few years but they have been giving their fans some very good hockey.

I've been so P@##ed with the Leafs for the last decade or so, I wear a Canadiens jacket just to get under the skin of people who don't know I'm really a die hard, closet-ted Leaf fan. I'll have a bonfire with it when, or if, the Leafs win Lord Stanley's mug.

Last nights game, a 4-2 Toronto win against the Habs was worth the watch, as always!

As for the goalie debate, Dryden won the Conn Smythe before he won Rookie of the year. Sawchuck had eyes that made the puck look like a beach ball. Johnny Bower never got a real chance until he was almost a senior citizen. Glen Hall played in 502 consecutive games. I'd take any one of them today. I think someone worth mentioning, and could play in any era is Martin Brodeur. But, if I had to pick one, I couldn't! I'd flip a coin and take either Bower or Jacques Plante. With today's equipment, I doubt you could put a pea past either one of them!

I don't have any bets with anyone this year.

I just wanted to talk hockey for a bit with the playoffs looming.

I have to say. I'm not happy with the Senators. First place at the half way point, they could miss the playoffs.

I still think a Ducks/Pens final is likely they both have the goaltending and they both are peaking at just the right time.

Don't tell me they have more of that great young talent waiting in the wings (get it? Ducks.. wings?)

Anyway if they have more where Getzlaf and those guys came from, its depressing.

3refs said:
"But, if I had to pick one, I couldn't! I'd flip a coin and take either Bower or Jacques Plante."
These guys were truly great! As long as Plante stayed in his crease he could stop anything. Problem was that he liked to wander around, but Les Habs had a second netminder on the ice called Doug Harvey.
Bowers had lightning fast reflexes and would get his glove, stick, pad, or head if necessary (no mask) in front of a Bobby Hull or Boom Boom slapshot. He was an old man by hockey standards and was still quicker than a teenager. A great shame that his younger playing days were lost in the minors.
Sawchuck I would rate as the greatest that I have seen only because he played much longer than Bower. He could do it all!
Glen Hall came alive in the playoffs and deserves to be rated highly as well. All that being said all of these men had great teams with a strong defense in front of them and would face about 30 shots or less in a game. Now Gumper Worsley had a much weaker team through those years and would face twice as many shots. He let more in but his save percentage was, I believe, often the highest in the league so he deserves mention.
There have been great goaltenders before and since but the last decade of the 6 team loop concentrated not only great goalies but great scorers as well. I consider that to have been hockey's greatest era!

Jack,
Getzlaff, Perry, Sutherby and Huskins (the ones I remember) started out here in Portland and the Ducks pulled them. We've got some talent here and they're young and fast. I love having hockey so close to home and the AHL is a great league but it's hard when you're a fan of the local team (and NOT the NHL version) and lose all your best guys this time of year. Though that IS what the AHL is for so I guess I should just suck it up and get used to it.

It must be great seeing guys like that when they are young and having it cost a small fraction of the NHL game.

The six team league was good. They had a lot of Canadian talent to pick from. Now, in many ways the best hockey is in the Olympics.

I can get great seats in Portland for $12 (parking in the garage next door just went up...to $5). Up until last season Portland was the farm team for the Capitals and we've seen a lot of really talented guys come through here in the past 15 years. It's fun to watch a game now and say "yup..Olie Kolzig (for example)..saw him play in Portland back in the day"

I have to admit I don't watch Olympic hockey..but the minor leagues are worth watching, for sure. We've got the AHL Portland Pirates and also the QMJL Lewiston Mainiacs here. Not to mention the UMaine Black Bears. All well worth the price of a ticket.

Vancouver will probably be the last year for the NHL in the Olympics, It will be in your time zone, you should watch some games.

A Canadian teal with Crosby, Getzlaf, Perry, Spezza, Heatley and all the Staal brothers.

The Russians with Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk and Nabokov

The Swedes with Alfredson, Lidstrom, Sundin Zetterberg the Sedins and Lundqvist

Very very strong teams playing for pride instead of money!
its been a great tournament for the past fer tears. Check it out in two years.

Our "local" ECHL team (an hour away) has sent a couple of guys to the AHL this year, and one has already gotten some NHL ice time. It IS great seeing them start out. On the other hand, "our" ECHL team feeds not into "our" Pens (who are only "ours" because our cable happens to carry them), but regularly trounces the team that does feed into the Pens' system. I have come to the conclusion that the sole reason for that lowly ECHL team's existence in the Pens' organization is to make a place to threaten to send non-producing AHL players down to. :~) Because they lose to everyone! :~)

GUEST,Texas Guest, I can't wait to meet you. When that finally works out, we must coordinate. You have exactly the same tastes in sports that I do. Notre Dame is my passion, and my Red Wings .... what can one say. True hockey fans haven't lived until they have been to Hockeytown. When we meet, the first pint is on me.

A month ago I went down to a Bass Pro Shops store in Portage, Indiana. I got disoriented by all the Notre Dame paraphanelia being worn. One lady, when I explained that I was used to being one of a very small minority amongst all the University of Michigan fans, told me, "Don't worry, honey, you are safe here. You are among family". *****chuckle*****

Thanks for the reminder Sandy. And Jack, your right there is no comparison. But I will say this. Mr Howe didn't need anyone to protect him. I don't believe, and correct me if I am wrong, that he had any weakness.

Howie had the best elbows in the league. ;-)

Messier was a bit of a bad ass too.

In a straight up fight who would win?

It wouldn't have happened because they would have respected each other. Just like Frank Mahovlich vs Bobby Hull or Richard versing Howe and so on. I just don't think it would have happened. However to answer your question. I don't know.

No way gnu. Ferguson picked his opponents. When Eric Nesterinko, who was rated #1 tough guy in his day, took on Howe it was a one punch knock out. After that the tough guys left Howe alone. Howe was not a fighter on the ice because in his younger days he was feared and in later years so highly respected that he didn't have to be. Howe had his own space on the ice. People entered it at their peril. Opposing Howe you would play the puck, not the body and wait politely for him to come out of the corners. Only Tim Horton and Bobby Hull were nearly as strong as Howe, but he was regarded as the strongest in his day. Messier was probably the one closest to matching his skill and strenth combination. Howe could do things that nobody else could though. He had a wrist shot that was deadly hard and accurate and could shoot right or left. More than anything else he could set the speed of the game to his liking.

Saw Gordie Howe on TV receive his jacket. He still looks better than the men's league players hereabouts.

When I was a kid, he was one of the few players who transcended the team, ie fans of all teams cheered for him. Not just great conditioning, training, skills, and inate ability, but fantastic perception, ambition, grace, and pure unadulterated instinct. Old clips of him leave me with that "how'd he get there?" feeling. Gretzky had it, but didn't have the size and stamina.

Few players would qualify for the "perfect player" definition, but Howe would be first.

Peace, Mooh.

"Set the speed.............. Bobby Orr could do this as well."
He sure could! He was able to control play much the same way as Howe.
Both of them would play their regular shift, kill penalties and quarter-back the power plays without burning out because they could slow the whole game down when they grew tired. Orr learned much from watching Howe and he had the natural ability to make it work. Even with crippled knees he could outskate the opposition. I would place Orr #2 on my greatest all around player list but oddly not the greatest defenseman. That spot belongs to Doug Harvey. Orr played in a weaker post expansion league and he changed the game to suit his style. For a defenseman to skate behind the opposing net was almost unheard of before, but it became his signature play to pass out to big Esposito planted in front of the net or to use Espo as a decoy as he slipped the puck home himself.
However Orr changed the game not always for the better because every defenseman in the league tried to imitate his style and non could. That was not his fault though. He was great!

GO PENS!

The cap will NOT break up the Pens next year. There is one guy they may have to lose, but the rest is media hype over the Hossa signing.

The Pens have been underfunded, staying way under the cap, while waiting for a new arena for years. They now have a deepening pocket, while the cap is set for a COLA-type raise very soon. The only core guy likely to have to leave for greener pastures is Malone. His value will only be calculable after the Pens (and his playoff stats) show whether they have gained enough experience to play nine different ways against teams that have scouted ALL the Pens' present-level-of-development strategies and tactics.

Yes I know they have all the talent in the world. Many nights you can see them coast on that youthful talent and then, when the magic gets tired, not knowing how to win on prosaic human-level TEAM skill. Some of that is youthful bravado and magical thinking, and some of that is young-man bodies with slower recovery and lower stamina than their elders.

But they are still learning the finer points of putting their talents together, and being able to execute. (I mean the technical learning-curve, not the attitude.)

Most of their losses this year (I have seen each and every one) have been caused by other teams being able to outcoach and out-counterpunch their moves. I say "outcoach" not because I think Therrien isn't a great coach, but because even the best talent still must develop line and team system refinements; he has only had a very short period of time with these kids.

When you watch them week in and week out you can see which thing Therrien is working on with them, and sometimes when a new systems skill is in development it temporarily disables one previously learned until they get to the point in the curriculum of putting the group of skills together.

So this year they will get as far in the playoffs as they get, and Malone will have to see what his market value-- not his agent's hype-- really is. And they'll have to decide if Hossa is a PermaPen, or just a Playoff Pen.

It will be great to watch, though.

~Susan

Those clips were something else. Man a few of them would make any player hide under a bed.

You know what Jack, your probably right. And that same comment has been echoed for about 10 years. I wish they were in a different division. Like the one with Ottawa, Toronto and so on. Here in the outskirts of Montreal (no special T.V. to get all the channels.)I only get to see them about twice a year so I am not a good judge as far as to their overall play except by the total numbers of points they have. In fact it pisses me off that the sports channel here in Montreal gives the Baseball and the National Football so much coverage. They will show who hit the home runs, made the great plays of all the teams that have played. They will cover all the football games and all their plays. They will give the Canadians even more time(Which is totally acceptable being a local station in Montreal.) and then we get to hear the score of our National sport from other games played. Rarely do I get to know who scored. This totally pisses me off. I don't give two hoots who made touchdowns or hit all the home runs or who were the loosing and winning pitchers or who came in to relief. I want to know who scored for the teams playing hockey in suposively our National sport. Oh!, I do love baseball and the Detroit Tigers is my team. Expoes were.
All is well,

Detroit has a great team. But they are not as dominant as the standings make them.

Beer, Youhave me beat big time, I can't justify 55 dollars a month for digital cable to see a few Carolina games, I get about six games a year on broadcast tv. They show mostly Pittsburgh, Flyers and Ranger games.

Referencing one of my previous posts (see "outcoach"), there are still some things in development that will make the Pens vulnerable to a team that can do what the Oilers did in their recent glory year, which was that they were equipped to change strategies dramatically according to the team they were playing and the bag of tricks that team was trying to use in each game. IMO that is what delivers the Cup-- the talent, backed by the team execution that can meet these challenges. Most teams build themselves to be, for example, a puck-posession team or a speed team, etc etc etc. Very few of them can multitask effectively beyond two or three systems. The Pens have the TALENT to do that... but not necessarily the seasoning to do it reliably, effectively, and consistently against teams with more background. (Of course I hope to be wrong.) When youthful enthusiasm is met by mature, cold-bloodedly executed skill, momentum can be entirely eclipsed without regard for talent. As Catters we know this ourselves in music, of course-- talent without hard work plus skilled guidance/management seldom goes far.

My longer post of last night didn't take-- I had wanted to share some of the foregoing as well as say that we're just thrilled that our local TV coverage will continue and that the guys who really know this team inside and out will be on the mic. The dogs are commentator-trained to hear and celebrate our team's goals when announced. :~) (The Versus coverage will be good enough for the Western games.)

Our ECHL team also is starting their playoffs (Friday), and we have some tix. Thank God the VCR that died has been miraculously resurrected.

GO PENS!

WYSIWYG, I have been an Ottawa fan since they have existed and every year for the past ten years I have thought "This might be the year." This year I really don't.

In the East, I don't think what kind of game the other team plays will matter when facing either Crosby's Line or Malkin's for fifty minutes out of sixty. W Frankly I don't think any of the other teams will play strong enough defensively to cope. The only way an East team can beat them is with a Conn Smythe trophy worthy series from their goalie.

There are a few goalies that may be capable. I don't think that either of Ottawa's 3 million dollar men are.

Yes, they really do play each other too often. My fear its that it will go one of two ways...either the Bruins will remember the scelping they got all year and psych themselves out and lose badly, or The Habs will develop a "blah...it's just the Bruins" attitude and lose because they're too sure of themselves. Being a Habs fan, I'm not so upset about the first scenario and I'm afraid of the second.

There are a few goalies that may be capable. I don't think that either of Ottawa's 3 million dollar men are.

Oh no, I totally agree with you that they should be able to handle Ottawa this year-- luck of the draw on injuries. But there have been (and are) teams that can shut down Crosby and Malkin.... They themselves are hard to shut down without penalty, but the rest of their lines are not yet firm enough AS LINES to ensure ultimate solution of the massive amount of scouting dedicated to grabbing bragging rights for "We beat the Pens."

For me, the real playoff thrill will be seeing how Therrien adjusts systems over the 7 games of each series to see if they can overcome this. The team right now does not KNOW that they can do this-- maybe they can, and maybe they actually will. But in the end, it's the team that best multitasks systems that ends up on top. And systems are a hard thing to play around with. (I'm talking systems, not strategies, here.)

As I said, I hope I am wrong... but it's been quite odd how often this past several years all of my suspicions and opinions have been immmediately borne out-- not only by analysts' comments but by team stats and results. Apparently I'm a pretty good observer and trend-spotter-- I wish it would pay off in my business marketing, but as long as I keep money out of the equation (LOL), I am usually spot on. [shrug] Who knows why?

So I don't bet, myself; but I'd caution anyone who is planning to put any money on the Pens just yet (other than sponsors and ticket buyers, LOL). We'll see if they can pull it off.

I would put money on the Pens to beat the East. The Rangers, I think are the second strongest team.

I don't think that this is their year to go all the way unless some cinderella team manages to get by the Ducks and Wings and then fold in the final.

Every year I look and look until I find which website has the best "Playoff Stats at a Glance" page for the playoffs. I wish they'd leave it, year to year, but no-- it moves around.

This year it's here: MATCHUP STATS

It is handy to have the whole set of matchups, series status, and individual game scores all in one place. Maybe they'll keep it current.....

GO WINGS!

Our favorite team, next to the Pens. Even if they end up playing each other. ESPECIALLY if they both end up playing! I would LOVE to have that as the final-- that way we can celebrate at our house, either way it goes, game by game.

=====

From NHL.com:

The playoffs are in full swing Tuesday night with five games on the NHL's docket.

A pair of 7 p.m. games features:

<> the Boston Bruins trying to even their series against the Montreal Canadiens (GO HABS!)
<> a leader emerging out of the Washington Capitals-Philadelphia Flyers series (GO FLYERS!)

Later this evening:

<> the Dallas Stars look to extend their series lead to three games against the Anaheim Ducks (GO STARS!)
<> the San Jose Sharks look to get even with the Calgary Flames (GO FLAMES!)
<> the Minnesota Wild play the Colorado Avalanche in Game 4 of a series in which all three games have gone to overtime (GO AVS!)

Busy night, and no doggies at home to celebrate with treats-- we leave first thing in the AM for a couple of days, and the poor dogs are at the kennel already.

Our ECHL team (GO JACKALS!) is in Game 3 tonight on home ice (series tied, home and home), so I hope the streamed radio doesn't buffer out while I watch the TV games-- we'll play that on the way to Harrisburg!

Once again at this time of year I mourn the Leafs and cheer as loud as I can get away with for Les Habitants.

As is the norm, the match-up with the Bruins is classic.

Out of the East I can see either Montreal, New York or Pittsburgh.

Out of the West I see Detroit, Detroit or Detroit.

As for Sean Avery, diplomatically speaking, I'll say he's unique. And, as an On-Ice-Official with Hockey Canada I'm not sure what he did can be called unsportsmanlike-conduct. I think they may have opened Pandora's Box by making an adjustment(or clarification) to the rules regarding his actions towards Brodeur. Distracting an opposing player, while not in any way physically interfering with him and not taunting him verbally or with gestures is fine with me!

Bye-bye Marty O'Fart Farty..... I'd rather the Pens would have been able to draw NJ next because we usually have so much fun easily beating Brodeur, and Lundqvist we have a little more trouble with, but I do like to see Marty lose it.
Rangers Avery takes final swipe at Brodeur
Associated Press
Apr 19, 2008, 12:33 AM EDT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - After five games of running into, harassing and annoying Martin Brodeur, Sean Avery took a final swipe at the New Jersey goalie after the New York Rangers eliminated the Devils in the first round of the playoffs.

Avery ripped Brodeur for his lack of sportsmanship for failing to shake his hand after the Rangers beat the Devils 5-3 to win the Eastern Conference series in five games.

Every Devils player shook Avery's hand - although some barely looked at him - until Brodeur dropped his hand and skated past the pesky forward.

"Everyone talks about how much class I don't have," Avery said.....
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?articleid=360978&page=NewsPage&service=page

And I think I know why the Ducks have been having so much trouble with the Stars in that series-- Pronger made a really stupid "Your Career, Dead"-type comment for the cameras right after he came off the last goon-suspension, and I think the league may have had a word with him that is inhibiting his "playing style" as he called it. This also probably explains one reason he was so eager to get out of Edmonton not so long ago-- as I recall, they didn't let him play his preferred style there, either. However, the Ducks are still alive.

Anaheim Ducks keep series alive with 5-2 victory over Dallas Stars
Canadian Press
Apr 19, 2008, 1:30 AM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Ducks aren't dead yet. The defending Stanley Cup champions were quite a lively bunch in forcing Game 6 against the Stars.

Teemu Selanne, Ryan Getzlaf and Sean O'Donnell each had a goal and an assist to lead Anaheim to a 5-2 victory over Dallas on Friday night. That trimmed the Stars' lead in the first-round series to 3-2. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 40 saves for the Ducks, who got off 31 shots at Marty Turco.

"I guess desperation is descriptive," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said....

For US/Versus viewers, I believe this will be the first game of the present series we've been able to catch. Since the Versus plan to cover the Pens/Sens game is off (due to EL SWEEPO), I believe they plan to go Canadien. Maybe they will even do it by buying the Cdn feed as they do for some of the late-night games-- we can only hope.

Marty Should have shook hands. Its the NHL front office that is to blame. The referees should be calling that crap.

They are calling that crap.

IMO all Marty did with his shunning was (A) encourage Avery and (B) confirm that Avery had gotten into his head. Marty is the king of hot-headedly vulnerable goalie reactions, when it comes to crease incursions.

Obviously they are not calling that crap enough. The referees are tight all year then the playoffs come and they back off. They especially back off when the goons are playing for a team in a big media market.

Marty should have shook hands. But Avery should not have got away with what he was doing.

Ah... therein lies the rub. Perhaps Marty should have been coached by The Gump. He tore up a few tendons in his day. These kids dunno enough to file down the top of the blade.

Not that I would approve of that. >;-)

The last 2 years (post-lockout), the referees seem to have tried various ways of calling crease crashes during the playoffs, and this year HAS seemed less consistent than last year so far.

But it doesn't help a goalie when his D-men are nowhere in reach, either. The Devils had to choose between staying up-ice on offense versus playing their usual shut-down D-game-- with the result that they scored more goals than ever before (or it seemed that way to me), but they didn't give Marty their usual close support. (I know the New NHL rules severely limit what the D can DO around the crease, but to do anything at all they have to BE there.) Avery had far, FAR too much leeway from the D.

You can't do both 100% for 60 minutes, and you can't pick one and still win a playoff series. This year, to try to deal with the "new" rules, the popular and winning team strategy seems to focus on forwards playing "responsibly" (defensively) around their own net.

That is a lot of work Susan. Great job. The only series that I can really judge is the Habs vs Boston. Just because those are the regular televised games where I live. The others are the bits and pieces I pick up and listen to on the Internet.
In what i have seen the Brunes deserve to win against the Canadians. The only game in my opinion that the Habs deserved to win was the first one. All other games belonged to the Brunes. But with a hot goalie the reverse has happened. As far as the Wings are concerned, I did get to see the last game they played and they deserved to win but it had to go to overtime because of goalie Mr. Ellis. The other games I can't comment on other than wishing they had won. Now I will make my self a cup of tea and settle back and watch the Wings as they are on T.V. covered by C.B.C.

good today in playing as a unit, keeping up the intensity and not
getting into stupid penalty situations. I am such a "homer," but
they are a really good team and I love their puck control game.
Man, it is just thrilling when Pavel or Zetti get that puck and drive the net; and the rest of the guys are just,...well,...I'm a

TG, that's exactly how we feel about cheering for mutiple teams.

GO HOCKEY!

What I hope, for the Pens, is that whoever they play in succeeding weeks takes a huge role in the ongoing curriculum Therrien is using for this team.

(I know some people will not only hope for, but expect, a Cup this year, but that's just a sign of today's WalMartization of the culture. In hockey, you still have to work for your success. The Pens are a learning, playing group of professionals, not a commodity called "Cup Winner" that can be yanked off the shelf at Wally World along with nachos and dip.)

... Because what's truly exciting about following that team is witnessing the development. In ministry and in training FOR the ministry, in our denomination we talk of it in terms of "formation." Education is part of formation but there is so much more. Seeing it as it occurs is a wonderful thing.

So win or lose, what I want this Cup drive to do for the Pens is to add into their formation. Ryan Malone is one example of this formation. Maxime Talbot is an earlier example-- he was slated to stay in the AHL with one more chance to move up, and he took that chance, welcomed the formation, and is a huge part now of their success. Another example is BGL (Big Georges Laraque). Therrien turned an enforcer who longed to play hockey, who had become known as a "huggy-bear" (AKA disappointing fighter), into the hockey player he longed to be. He gave him the tools and the opportunity to become part of the scoring juggernaut. BGL responded by getting into the best playing condition of his career, quickening his puck handling, joining rushes up ice, and scoring.

These are not accidents of happening to play with wildly talented Crosby and Malkin, anymore than Crosby's success is a result of mere talent. They are the deliberately-achieved results of Therrien's approach to developing-- forming-- hockey players.

I used to worry about whether Therrien would have a useful career once the team had reached its peak-- could he coach beyond the initial formation of his young players? Seeing what he did with the fodder from the farm team, when the Pens had horrible injury trouble-- I don't worry about that anymore. Seeing what he does with Gary Roberts-- priceless.

GO THERRIEN!

~Susan

They are good but those skills depends upon who they are playing. If the defensemen on the other team play well positionally and their forwards back check, passing and puck control can be interrupted. I do think the Wings are the strongest team still in it.

Rust gone after short ramp up, and all lines ROLLING. Poor Lundqvist, can't know what hit him. He is the most feared goalie they'll face. The umbrella strategy is a new wrinkle in the curriculum. Therrien is ON it. I bet Conklin and Meloche and Fleury sat the team down to request it.

Now I have to tell you this. I was visiting a friend today(That is at least I thought he was a friend until he showed me the door.)and after we finished talking about the price of tea in China I was leaving when I noticed on a side table the headline in the Montreal paper saying something about the Canadians loosing. So I pointed this out to "topical tom" and said what is this. He quickly said *^&%+@8*#%^@ GET OUT. So with my shoes not even tied I dove for the door nearly tripping on the outside steps and ran for the car. This man is insane I told myself. I better make a call to the Psy. Hospital as I still have connection in the admitting department. Well, when I got home and told my wife about it she said to relax that maybe he will call and agree with me that the Canadians' are finished (Of course she didn't really say this as she is a strong Canadian supporter, but that is what it sounded like.). I'm thinking of going back over soon with my Red Wing Jacket and Cap on just to provoke him.

WOW - what an exciting game Pavel, Zetti, Ozzi and the rest of the guys are takin' it to 'em; however, one of these days I've got to learn to relax, get off the edge of the seat, reduce the level of ear-splitting yells and comments and lower my heart rate.

Another good game coming up tonight, too - Stars and Sharks, and Dallas may just wrap their's up. But, damn, the Wings play on Thursday and I've got a show to do - it's o.k., though, cause if they win it'll be great, and if they lose, well, I'll get to see them on Saturday. GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

=====

I have to admit, I strongly doubted the Pens could do so well against Lundqvist-- a perennial Penguins killer. The NYR are the one team I feared they'd have to play. Also another worrying Pens foible was evident last night: they showed a youthful lack of focus near the end of the first period, when they had a 4 minute PP and lost steam after scoring a PP goal but then failed to pour on the coals for the second 2-minute opportunity just before the period ended. ("Hey, we're up 3-1, what could go wrong?") That came back to bite them in the ass when they failed to hold their lead against a Jaromir Jagr who had been sipping at the fountain of youth during the internission-- I know for a fact IVs to push fluids are hung over hockey players in dressing rooms from time to time, to augment what sports/energy drinks and ammonia caps can do at the bench. Who knows what's in those IVs, really?

But then they just schmeared the Rangers anyhow. The Rangers did everything they could, but thank you Ryan Hollweg for playing to type.

I will be surprised (and thrilled beyond belief) if the Pens can schmear 'em again tomorrow night, but then.... I also wonder how the heck the Rangers will be able to recover enough, physically, considering the frightening amount of energy they left on the ice last night. Maybe Gary Roberts can give them a health-shake recipe.... but no, he probably won't do that. :~)

Let me give my account of what happened yesterday. My friend Adrien,(or so I thought), came over to the house. We had a nice visit discussing music, the up-coming Apple Hollow Music Fest, the price of tea in China and the price of coffee in Columbia.Just as he was leaving Adrien saw a headline in the Gazette , "Habs' Rally Falls Short", and he actually had the gall to pass a comment on it!Well, being a fervent Canadians fan, I naturally took umbrage and ripped off on expletive followed by "GET OUT!"Sorry about the expression I used, Adrien, but I just couldn't think of a worse one at the time. However, being a friend, all is forgiven. Adrien, you are more than welcome to come over anytime.Just don't bring the !$%^&*!! Red Wing jacket and cap! (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...)

BIG MICK - you are IN!

WYSIWYG - you know, I'd love to tell you about the third period, but
I get so excited, and so involved that I don't remember anything.
I do recall that the ice battle was very intense and the intensity
really increased when the Av's made it 4-3; and, I was really pleased to see the guys not fold and get harried; in fact, if anything, they just tightened up and their passing and puck
control just got more precise. Forsberg drew a couple of penaltys
that gave us the power-play and Osgood was simply outstanding in that I believe he stopped 18 shots-on-goal in the third - he was going in all directions and nothing was getting through. Outstanding game - sorry you missed the end, but there's a Stars game tonight and the Wings play again tomorrow. Cheers.

Our boys faced wily men, several of whom are comtemplating retirement-- just, not tonight. :~) The discovered how to screw up the clustered-sniper pattern; I'm not quite sure how they did it myself, system-wise.

Actually I thought the NYR deserved to win the last game, so it did not surpise me that they sucked it up and came out hard and smart. Sunday's rematch will be quite interesting.

Big Mick - thanks for the link there. I had to work Thursday night
but they did have the game on at the pub. As it turns out, I wore a Red Wing sweater and hat and the pub manager came up and complimented me on my attire - turns out she's a big Wings fan.
I didn't get to see much of the game but everytime I looked up the
score seemed to change; and, obviously, it left me quite happy.

Concerning the Stars, however - that game should never have gone into
overtime - officials be damned - end of story. GO RED WINGS!!!

Well, after the four-OT victory for the Stars last night the DFW
talk show folk are saying that Dallas will beat Detroit in the
Western Conference Finals because they're on a roll and peaking at
the right time with all of their "big guns" chipping in to get the
job done.

Another interesting analysis: the Hockey News Stanley Cup "Final Four Preview" has also given the edge to Dallas because the Red Wings haven't played anyone, they're not tough enough, their front men are not as good as Dallas, Turco is better than Osgood, and the Dallas power play is better than the Red Wings. Hmmm, I was hoping to see the Wings beat the Penguins in the final round, but it seems my guys are supposed to lose - what say you? GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

Hm, I kinda doubt it, but then I wasn't sure they'd blow out the Rangers, either. I'm just swooning over the Flyers-fun that comes next. (Get your Batman TV-series BAMs and POWs ready. We're working on the sound effects.)

Whatever, it will be a great coupla weeks, eh? Then hopefully the Cup finals.

And then it will be over till October. [sniff] The Pens website has a GREAT archived series, "Inside Penguins Hockey," that the local FSN station produced. All 20 episodes arcived for those long, lonely, strangely-warm (hockeyless) days of summer. Player interviews but also, more significantly for us, week by week recaps of the week's highlights and team newsworthy matters, with a voiceover that puts it all in the context of their overall season strategies. A march to the Cup, captured in digital video, we hope. F***in historical, man. :~)

Do the Wings have something like that in their site?

Whoa! Very, very nice game at the Joe last night. My step-son walked out of the house he was so upset - he just could not believe
that his mom, a native Texan, was cheering for the Red Wings; then,
when the Wings got up to 3-0 in the second period he just couldn't
take it anymore and he left.

I cheer for two teams - the Detroit Red Wings and the University of Notre Dame - and there is no quarter given, period. I've gone through some down times with the Wings and all the Golden Domers
are going through a rough time now; and, you know, somewhere along
the way you learn that it's just a game - get excited, spill your beer, get hoarse (unless you're a singer)have a lot of fun but go away knowing that you'll awaken in the morning with folks still
dying in Iraq, folks still starving in Africa and the rent has got
to be paid.

It seems I needed to get this off of my chest, so thanks for the space folks. Oh,...by the way,...GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

We've not been taping Wings, but that could change if needed. Certainly WILL change if Pengwings meet in Cup Final. I tape the local pregame show, the game on whatber network has it that we get, and then back to local for post-game.

Total Recorder for NHL Radio works, too, then dbPowerAmp to convert .wav to .mp3. Hockey games on an MP3 player's a kinda fun way to take a long road trip. :~) (I will probably run that for the Final if the Pens are in it, as well as the videotape.)

gold and then she said, "How cool, we get to see the last game of the series." I looked at her and said, "Baby, that would be a sweep,..." and she shot back, "Yeah, I know, isn't it cool?"

I'm not sure if she knows something I don't, but if she does, I will certainly accept it.

You know, from my viewpoint - which was probably the same as yours,
the Crosby "non-goal," in tonight's game was really a goal; I mean, once the puck got up on its side, which it was - it was over the line - totally. As most of you know, I'm a Red Winger, and there is no favorite here, but that was a goal. They must have had visual static or something in Toronto. GO RED WINGS. Cheers.

I dunno what cameras they use; in the TV feed slo-mo I thibnk it was clear that the puck was in the air over the line. But I do not know if that is the same footage they see when they review. Whatevr-- every game has bad calls, in every sport. The main thing is to keep scoring. But BIRON knew the truth and it's bound to work on him as he anticipates Game 3. :~)

I think they'll be looking to hurt Malkin, if line changes don't let them spring Briere loose from the big guy's shadow. Or win at least one at home and then hurt Malkin in Pittsburgh to keep Briere loose from him. That seems to have been the one thing they could not overcome-- Therrien kept sending Malkin out on every Briere deployment, and Briere couldn't get any room.

As a prelude to tonights game let me write that I am so sick and tired of the local media bally-hooing about the Osgood/Ribeiro thing that I just had to turn it off - I hope the Wings kick the dog out of the Stars tonight and beat 'em 6-0.

I saw the replay and yes, Osgood stuck his stick out there to interfere with Ribeiro - but he did it blindly - he didn't try to
put his eye out; Ribeiro, on the other hand; did a really stupid thing coming across the net with his stick. Was Osgood hurt?
Certainly not. Is he a bad actor? Surely he is. Would anyone else
carry out a similarly poor acting stint? Probably so.

In a rare example of level-headedness the NHL chose to fine both
players and basically say, "grow up kids, we got work to do, now get back in there and play." Thank you NHL for not over-penalizing these two clowns.

That being said, let me say, "no thank you" to the Dallas media for giving us an all-day rant about the incident and electing to talk and talk and talk and talk about the damned incident - ALL DAY - one program after another. Ya know - there was a 60-minute hockey game played before that incident you bozo's; let's talk about what the Stars need to do to break Detroit's strangle-hold on them, or about how good the Red Wings are and that they could sweep the Stars over the next three days.

But ya know - maybe I've got a problem too, for listening to it for
most of the day. GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

Bob Sturm of "The Ticket" said on the post-game show that the Wings

Big Mick - that Jamers and a pint sounds good. Frankly, I'm a little
worried about tomorrow. I've read several articles written by folks who think the Stars are going to do it to the Wings, and, again, if
the Wings don't put them away tomorrow then it becomes 3-2 and back to Dallas. Another thing - Turco has gotta win at The Joe sometime
and I just hope it's not tomorrow.

Logically, I know that the Stars are not the better team, but hey, this is Stanley Cup playoff hockey and a weird bounce or a bad call by some idiot zebra and sure enough you're on the golf course. So
here's a tip-o-the-hat to the Wings - GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

I don't understand; but, I'm not happy and it stinks! Sure, Dallas has played better since losing three, but the Wings have done a one-eighty in terms of aggressive play and tape to tape puck control.
Something has gone wrong and I sure don't know what it is unless it's
in the Wings head or their heart. If Dallas eliminates my boys from the cup finals it will be tough to live down here in North Texas for

I think both teams will feel like they are looking in a mirror. Except that the Wings don't have a Roberts, or a Ruutu, or a Laraque. I do not think they will fold to the pressure, though. I don't think this one will be the mental game the Sens games were.... pure hockey, hockey, hockey..... I just think the Wings' experienced D-men may know a few tricks our young talent may not yet have had to slither around on a regular basis, and it is possible the Wings' scorers will have a few slithery dekes of their own that our younger D haven't had to, um, interrupt.

Well, it's a great coaching and defense battle-- it took 2 periods for the Wings to get the Pens' number and set 'em back on their heels. Now we have to see what the Pens do in response, especially Therrien. It did not surprise me to see the Wings win the first one.

In the first period it looked like the Pens dictated the speed and that it it was just a hair faster then the Wings were accustomed to, and that this forced the Wings to take shots on net a little too fast and a little off the mark. A pastoral event came up in the second period and I did not get a chance to see what the Wings did to change that, but clearly they adjusted something and it worked for them.

I thought the biggest single mistake was that Therrien didn't take a time out when it got to 2-0. The rest of the players' mistakes flowed from there. One of those was that when you camp out in front of the crease, waiting for a puck to land on your stick, ya gotta be facing the net, not the red line, to one-time the centering pass.

It took 4 Sens losses last year for the Pens to learn their lesson about the playoffs. I'm hoping it only will take 1 or 2 losses from the Wings to learn the necessary lesson about the Final. If they do, they can win their 2 home games and we'll have a series.

And if not, GO WINGS.

~Susan

Therrien is kjbown for his extraordinarily precise planning. I would think, based on seeing the specific ways he's adjusted his curriculum for the bys, that G2 will be an exercise in simply scoring. Even one goal scored properly will prepare the boys for G3 on home ice. Not enough is said in this year's coverage about the advantages of home ice-- bench location, kine changes at faceoffs, faceoffs themselves, etc.; it's not really about the fans although that IS what all teams' players have been coached to say to the media this year. IF the Pens follow this curriculum faithfully and IF they are able to use their home-ice advantages effectively, THEN the rest of my predictions would be reasonable except that I am not sure their win in Detroit will come in G5 or G7. (Today, I would say G7.) But we'll have to see, and the Wings are certainly playing like a team that means to go all the way, as systematically and ferociously as they can. (Even a Pens fan's gotta love those Red Wings.)

I do know for sure that today the whole Pens organization is reviewing the G1 game film to see not only what they did wrong (they already know that anyway), but exactly what the Wings did that boxed them off their game, and what they already know that they can employ to correct that success. And that should result in a more nail-biting G2 for us all.

Therrien will be steadying them after that review (and in tomorrow's practice and/or team meeting) to remind them that they do have some stuff in their bag of tricks that they can use to their advantage, and he will be telling them privately that it is not important whether they win G2 but rather whether they learn what they need to learn to finish the series the way they want to finish it.

All I know is, I can't wait to see what they all do next, and I hope we get all 7 games of fun before the season ends.

GO LORD STANLEY!

Well Susan one thing the Wings did was kill of the penalties that they were taking way to much of and this discouraged the Pens. Especially when they came right back and scored. Some great help from the cross bars post and Osgood also played a major role.

So many have said so much, both here, in the Free Press, and in the Pittsburgh paper as well; but, my wife and I watched one hell-of-a hockey game last night that should have been scored 5-0 - but that's another issue.

The Wings played very well; and, it seems to me that the inability of the Pens to do what they "normally" do was due in no small part to the fact that they were playing the Wings - not the Rangers or the Flyers. The Wings have been the best team in the NHL all year, day in and day out - and that cannot be discounted. They are a very good team; and, I believe - a team of destiny.

This is to take nothing away from the Pens who are a fine team too, and surely, the Wings are not going to cruise through this series
by any means, but I'll be surprised if they don't ultimately take it. Having said that - this is some great hockey being played.

What a wonderful play Sammy made to score the first goal - taking the puck from behind the blue line, skating virtually unmolested around the net back and coming in for a wrap-a-round - WOW, some play. There was good checking, crisp passing and tons of heads-up
play on both sides. I recall one of the most incredible moves I've ever seen when Crosby came across the blue line with the puck and headed inward towards the net; he ran into a defenseman who had great position so Crosby reversed his body to the outside with a single body-flip-in-motion and didn't slow down an iota - he was stopped on that play but that one move showed me what he's capable of - WOW.

My big problem with the NHL is that Crosby is a great player, but so is Datsyuk, and Lidstrom, and Zetterberg, and Modano, and Sakic, and Hossa, etc.,... Don't make this league revolve around one guy - Gordie Howe's and Wayne Gretzky's don't come down the path every year - sell the league, not one player. The NBA has been looking for the "next Michael Jordan" since he retired - the hell with it, there is no "next Michael Jordan" - promote the league and all the great players therein and let the cream rise to the top.

Hey, I'm starting to rant so it's time to go,...well, it's not just time to go, it's time to - GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

Tex, I agree with you, and so does Crosby. Hype is hype is hype. The NHL has a thorough strategic plan and that includes media; every player now is coached on the right "talking points" for every occasion. Hm, it's a bit cult-like in that respect. :~)

Therrien has one more trick up his sleeve he could play if he really is the cold-blooded, genius-quality son of a bitch I hope he is. :~) I think I'll keep that one to myself for now, though.

I got a look this afternoon at what they Wings did that the Pens will need to adjust tonight. The commentators are already talking about that precise thing, because the coaches are too; Crosby, I understand, took it up with the team as well.

It's all about the neutral zone. The Pens have had a great loose sort of trap thing-- a box instead of the more familiar triangle or wall-type-- and the Wings had a good plan in place for that. The Pens will need to take another tack. They do have a few to try. :~)

Oughtta be a good one.

Boy, I'll say.

The Pens are used to being the only ferociously fast team. The Wings have clearly been better prepared to meet skills on a par with their own as the starting point, and to go one level higher to overcome it.

I'm really disturbed by the Roberts hit on Franzen (to the head), at the end of an otherwise healthy and clean check. I think he should be suspended for that one.

Susan, I agree with you on Franzen. Everyone knows that he has been out with headaches, re: concussion concerns. That was one very cheap shot that should have been penalized - I don't like to see that kind of stuff from anyone. In fact, I was not one of those who was happy to see Bertuzzi in a Red Wing uniform last year and was not unhappy to see him go at the end of the season.

Beer (and Susan) - you know, I'm not so sure that anyone saw the hit by Roberts on Franzen; and, the Wings have an attitude going during this playoffs that says, "don't retalliate." That is not to say that the Wings are not hitting either, because they are.

I'm listening to Detroit talk radio right now and the call-in fans are furious over the Franzen hit. I like to stay level-headed about the game and keep it simple; I love a good clean hit as much as the next guy, but when players give in to cheap shots it becomes real easy to dislike them. I sincerely hope that the Wings continue to stay clean headed and simply keep kicking ass. GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

If the officials don't see something, they are prevented by league rules from calling it-- that's what the suspension process is meant to address, where league officials can ask for all relevant footage of an incident and make a punitive determination on their own. A penalty lasts just a few minutes, but a suspension costs the player and team his playing time when they most wish they could have it, as well as stiff fines. It's a substantial deterrent that can be triggered by league officials on their own or, if they miss it, by the team whose player was endangered.

And the Stanley Cup comes home to Detroit where it belongs. They don't call this "Hockeytown" for nothin'.

Is Mike Babcock not the best coach in hockey????

Go Wings.

Congratulations to the Wings.

I suspect that the Pens will have a few more chances in the next few years. What a great young team!

Yeh, Congratulations to the Wings from me as well! As much as I would like to see the Pens go all the way the Wings were dominant throughout the series and the season as well. They deserve the win!

Now that the season is over will Frenchy's be holding a sale of Cherry's old jackets?

LOL Sandy. But maybe you should give a brief description of Frenchy's as I don't think you will find their stores out side the Atlantic (or should I say the Maritimes)Provinces.

I feel like getting on a plane and heading out to Harbor Grace. I'm sure the party will go on for a while yet. The Wings were truly a great team to watch and even though there will probably be a few retirements taking place they will still be a club to contend with next year. I'm not predicting a Cup but they will still have a great season and fans in the Eastern Division will still say"Ya, but the Western Devision is not as tough and the Wings won't be able to match the hard hitting clubs of the East". Those fans that say this (and there are still a lot of them around.)better wake up because this game has become a skating game since the rule change of a few years ago. If these changes had been made sooner we would have had Yzerman, Lemieux, Bourque, and other greats playing a lot longer. But goons shortened their season.

All in all, the Penguins have a dynamic team and if Lemieux can keep this great bunch of fellows together the cup should be heading their way for a number of years.

It's been fun and thanks to all who has been participating. You know who you are. Surprisingly this thread and those before (on Hockey) have a lot to be proud of. Sure some comments can get under our skin but compared to some of the threads that are posted this has to be one of the most civil of them all.
Until next season, have a great summer. I will keep my eye on this thread until it goes off.

I also like the idea of starting a separate thread on hockey when the Playoffs begin. Like the above title as well for the Playoff section. It's like a new season once it begins.

As it turned out, I liked the fresh thread too. It certainly ran long enough to make a big ole thread, didn't it?

I think this one should be retitled to indicate the year, though.

The one trick Therrien didn't play (that I alluded to previously) would have been to surprise and confuse the Wings by starting Conklin. His manner of playing the puck would have thrown the Wings forecheck off and the Pens' D might have gotten some better plays up ice..... Fleury would have cheerfully gone along with it and after 2 games they could have put him back in to confuse the Wings all over again. :~) (Briefly.)

There are few places in hockeydom, outside of the handshake for players and right in the arena seats for the fans, where being for one team does not involve disparaging the other team. Here at Mudcat I never felt my team was being disrespected, and I appreciated that. In the OT thriller in fact it WAS as if you were all here in our living room. Next year we will have to work on how to virtualize the event even more.

I'll start. Is there anyone here who has not heard how our dogs celebrate a goal when our team scores? Next year I'll get pictures including a living room shot with the winter recliner setup. We can put our respective pix up somewhere.

~Susan

~S~... no problem... just ask a clone to do it.

A good friend of mine sent me something to keep me busy until next season. I very seldom play these but this is downright addictive.

Wow - what a team!
          What a season!
                What a playoffs!
                     What a finals!
Yes, it is a fine day in Hockeytown South. Words are just not flowing at the moment, but thanks to Beer, Big Mick, WYSIWYG, gnu and everyone else who participated in this fine thread throughout
the playoffs; and yes, it is really nice to express our thoughts and emotions here regarding our favorite team (and as I once wrote - I take no quarter)and do it with respect for the other teams and those friends who support them - kinda like the handshake at the end of the series - very cool.

Needless to say, I'm hanging around her pretty regular; so, like Beer I'll keep looking in until this thread disappears then I'll take a bit of a sports breather and wait for college football to start so I can cheer on my Fighting Irish - which, of course means that hockey season is just aroung the corner and we start all over.
GO RED WINGS! Cheers.

OK, Yeah, the Wings are a much better team. Truthfully, we shouldn't have lasted till game 6. The Wings outplayed the Pens 55 minutes out of each game and the Pens pulled out a few miracles during the other 5.
Still it was a fun series to watch(albeit painful at times). We'll be seeing you in another series within a couple of years.

I have to agree that this thread remained extraordinarily civil and fun.

Rich

gnu, that fly game thing is no damn good-- it has to be buzzing around HOCKEY FOOD. That we can pick up and consmue, for points, plus a beer to wash it down. While we dodge flying pucks.
