I love this song and Altan's version of it. The third or fourth verse is in Gaelic and I am desperate for the words and a translation if possible. Can anyone help a pitiful English speaker?

I am told there is a full Gaelic version of this song as well. I would welcome the lyrics to that also.

On the new album Eist ("Listen") by Torc Music, there's a nice version of Ar Bhruach na CCarraige Báine by Breandán O Bheaglaigh and, I think, Mary Black, which has a parallel-texts translation in the accompanying leaflet.

I don't know which verse is in Irish in the version you've heard, but suspect it's probably the first, which translates as (my own translation):

O, westwards [or far back in the hinterlands] by a river, without lie, without doubt The sweetheart-girl is serene and gentle Whose mountain-recess is brighter than swan on wave From forehead to sole of her shoes It is she who is the stately woman who has torn apart my heart And she has left my mind sorrowful And medicine to be had will never be mine forever Since my bright love refused me.

There are two versions of "Bruach na Carraige Báine" - at least. The slow lovesong from Munster begins "Ó is thiar a chois abhann gan bhréag gan dabht ...." A beautiful song. The other - as recorded by Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin and Altan - is faster and is an example of Macaronic verse, where at lest two languages are used in the ;yrics. Diarmaid Ó Muirithe also gives a version in his ground-breaking "an t-Amhrán Macarónach" Annraoi

I really would like to know more about the lovesong form Munster. We heard it for the first time on the cd "trad form the heart" we bought in Galway. The second time it was performed live in a pub in Feakle last year. Everyone there kept silent, we all were moved. Anyway, where can we find the music of this beautiful, slow lovesong? please help.

Hanny - "sheet music" is rarely available for folk songs, although many can be found in collections. Finding a particular song usually means leafing through songbooks in the local folk music store. You could search the 'net for a MIDI file, and I've had some luck asking Mudcatters for a MIDI file of a song I'm interested in (if someone else loves the song and knows the tune they might create one for you), but that means you need the computer software to read it. In one case, someone sent me a gif file I could print directly. So, there are a few options - keep trying but it may take a while.

I've heard the Diarmuid Ò Suilleabháin recording, mentioned earlier in this thread. It's not the same words nor tune that the O Beaglaoich / Begley family sing. Ó Suilleabháin sings verses in English and verses in Irish.
The Begleys' version (second tune posted by Alison) is as given at the Druidstone site under the title "Edge of the White Rocks", with lyrics in Irish and English translation provided

That's a mixture of two songs you have there (see Annraoi's post earlier in the thread). Most of your ENGLISH verses are from the "macaronic" song where the Irish and English verses are sung alternately (same verse, two languages) while your IRISH verse is from the song referred to earlier as sung by the Begley family of Kerry. The verse marked translation is of that Irish verse. I've never heard that song performed in English.

Incidentally, I've never heard a single language version of the other song - it's always done in that alternating fashion, in my experience.

Click here to hear Altan singing "The Banks of Carraige Baine" ( rather faint sound) which is closely related to the macaronic song described earlier - but uses a quite different tune. I've heard Len Graham and other Northern singers, in particular, sing it. Altan seem to have fitted in one verse of the other song, in Irish, alright.
