Subject: need to go for a brief midweek wander

Work is going through a really heavy phase at the moment and I desparately need to get away. It looks as if I might be able to take a couple of days off midweek in about three weeks. Anyone got any ideas where to go.

Criteria

Easy to get to by public transport from Sheffield

A good tune with a bit of singing session on a Tuesday or Wed night which would welcome someone to just drop in and possibly do a couple of songs if that's ok but listening is good. (Irish , Scottish but a good mix appreciated).
Cheap accomodation ( Hostel perhaps)
Stuff to look at during the day - Museums, Art Galleries, Castles, bit of countryside, bit of walking - just enough to keep my mind off work)

I'm sure that you can come up with some wonderful suggestions.

( Actually Sheffield meets all the criteria - but I'm already here so it doesn't count as getting away)

thanks
J

Julie

Might be more effective if you put Sheffield/oop North in the thread title? :)

Chester is a nice town, shops, book stores, visit Emma B for maybe a lunch?

Trouble with Chester is that my brother would insist that I stayed with him and it would really put him out as the house is not in a state for visitors yet. Will do Chester in a few months when he is happier to put me up.

The Dales

My Auntie lives in New Mills - close to Kinder Scout and good rail links to Machester

On Tuesday nights there are folk clubs at Kiveton Park (near Worksop) and Mansfield. These should be easy enough to get to by public transport from Sheffield. You can get a spot at both clubs. No idea about accommodation though.

If you come to York and can get to Flaxton (which is about 10 miles north) on a Wednesday you would be very welcome - there is a B&B in the village which a couple of people have used. Singaround / session with a mix of different sorts - some Irish/Scottish fiddle music, some unaccompanied singing, some chorus stuff, some accompanied songs etc etc On an average evening somewhere between 25 and 35 people there of which something like 15 sing or play. Start about 8.30 finish when we finish (11:30 - 12:00 ish)

And there is a Castle at Sheriff Hutton about 3 miles away!
